The Dent County Commissioners met Monday morning for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 5360, 5380, 6400, 6570 and 6575. Purcell stated that patching of chip and seal roads will continue, and that a culvert will be replaced on Dent County Road 5015. In District 2, Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading would be done and materials would be added to Dent County Roads 2130 and 3140, while Dent County Roads 2030, 3150 and 3183 would just be graded. He said that workers were checking the Boss area for damages from the severe weather that came through Friday although no one had reported any problems in that area. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he attended a Region I Homeland Security Oversight Committee meeting Thursday and they are still waiting to hear on the grant for the generator for the Red Cross Shelter at the Oak Grove Baptist Church. Skiles said they should hear in a week or two. He did report that George LeJoie from Air Evac has been elected as the Vice Chairman of the committee. Skiles also reported that the group that traveled to Kearney, Nebraska last week was impressed with the Interop-Solutions system that allows communication between a number of different devices from highway patrol to fire departments to local police. Skiles said that the system is adaptable and they found no down side to the system they saw which has been in operation for over five years. He did say that Interop-Solutions is reviewing some options that may actually make the system less expensive for Dent County, and they expect to hear back from them later this month. At the last meeting, the board approved the bid for chip and seal from Donelson Construction Co., LLC; and will have the RC & D help implement a community wildfire protection plan utilizing Title III funds. The commission also talked with Rebecca Fredrich with Lynn, Davis and Moots Accounting Firm to about the financial audit of the county. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Monday evening in the city hall council chambers. Mayor Gary Brown was not at the meeting so Alderman Kenneth Nash served as the acting mayor. The board postponed making a decision on the bid for the mowing of nuisance property until the next meeting. They did approve the low bid from Bridgewell Resources for a truckload of poles consisting of 17-30’ poles, 17-45’ poles and 2-50’ poles for $8,528.10. The board also approved the low bid from Arkansas Electric for the purchase of 500 feet of 2/0, 4/0 and 350 mcm copper wire for a total of $3,335.00, then approved the low bid from Delmo, inc. for the purchase 21,732 feet of #2 6/1 ACSR Sparrow to replace three-phase lines for $3,694.44. There was to be a public hearing prior to the regular board meeting by the Salem Planning and Zoning Commission but they did not have a quorum present so no hearing was held. After approval of the consent agenda, Alderman Kenneth Nash read some notes from the mayor’s report that said that it was time to work on the budget for the next year. A Capital Improvement Meeting will be held next Tuesday morning at 11:00. Mayor Brown also wants to look into a couple of the projects that the Missouri S & T students did some work on and that is the installation of new street lights in downtown Salem and work on the Highway 19 North Roadside Park. The mayor’s report stated that there were 70 shut-offs this past month, and that there are reports of problems with the view looking south from North Main and Rolla Road after pole improvements were made. Alderman Jerry Randell wanted to comment on the meeting Friday about bio-mass from ProEnergy Services and was disappointed that there wasn’t some literature or more written information available at the meeting on the process. He felt the power point presentation was good, but wished they had put together some informational packets. He wanted to state though that he is in favor of exploring the process for the city of Salem. The  board approved Bill #3197 that rezoned 1000 West International from Residential to Commercial before approving the bills. The meeting was then adjourned.

An accident occurred at 4:00 Friday afternoon in Dent County on Highway 32 about 19 and half miles east of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2004 Chevrolet Impala driven by 26-year old Kyle Selle of Viburnum was traveling westbound on highway 32. The accident occurred at the Impala ran off the left side of the roadway, struck a bridge and overturned. Selle suffered moderate injury and was taken to the Salem Hospital by the Iron County ambulance. He was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet Impala was totaled and removed from the scene by Abney’s Towing.
