The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors held their regular monthly meeting last Thursday evening at the hospital library. In the summary of operations for the month of March, the hospital showed a gain from operations of $36,646, and an excess of revenues over expenses of  $68,874. Cash flow for the hospital increased by $351,316 and the days in accounts receivable fell to just 50. During the month, there were 69 acute patients admitted, 889 emergency room visits, 85 emergency room transfers, 184 ambulance runs with 27 dry runs, 27 surgery cases, 1804 in-patient registrations, 27 surgery cases, 271 Home Health visits, 9,011 lab tests, 1,215 radiological procedures, 326 CT scans, 15 MRI scans, 37 nuclear med scans, 403 rehab treatments, 162 dialysis treatments, and 372 clinical visits. Hospital Administrator Dennis Pryor went over the ER patient satisfaction results and there were 86 responses, most of them extremely positive about their experience. He also reviews the Inpatient satisfaction survey results and there were 22 responses, most areas with exceptional results except for the patient booklet that received fair results. Pryor reported that some more work had been done on the Physicians Office Building 3 bring the expenses to $1,344,820. He said that there would be a Women’s Health Screening on May 5^th, 6^th and 7th at the hospital library; and a disaster preparedness meeting on “Are You Ready for a Tornado?” on May 14^th at 6:30 at the Oak Grove Baptist Church. Mary Sweets, the CEO at the Kiowa County Memorial Hospital, will present her slides of the damage done to their hospital. The Salem Memorial District Hospital and Air Evac are sponsoring the meeting and it will be open to the public. The board accepted a donation from the Judson Young Foundation of $5,000 and Pryor said that the money would be used to assist the auxiliary with the purchase of TV’s for the patient rooms. The board then approved the Red Flag Rule concerning policies on identity theft prevention as required by the government. Carol Lacy updated the board on the Swine Flu before they discussed purchases. The board approved the budgeted purchase of two monitors for electronic file management from CDW-G for $274, an adjustable ergonomic keyboard for information systems for $304 from Fentek-Ind, and office furniture and renovation from Automated Business Systems for $2,825 for the pharmacy. They further approved the non-budgeted purchase of charts and racks for the dialysis department due to the increased patient load for $846. The board then voted to go into closed session.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers located at 202 North Washington beginning at 7:00 pm. During the hearing of persons Jeff Meadows of C.M. Archer Group wishes to discuss the new DNR regulations concerning the Spring Creek Branch. The City of Salem invited independent certified public accountants to submit proposals for perform financial and compliance audits for 2009-2011 and the bids will be addressed. Bill Huffman from the Planning and Zoning Board will report on the meeting held prior to the Alderman meeting concerning occupancy permits, mobile home park licenses and the definition of a single-family dwelling. Alderman Brad Nash, Kenneth Nash, Jim Jackson and Jim McDaniels will discuss miscellaneous items involving the City of Salem. McDaniels will give a report of revenue and expenditures from the Community Wide Yard Sale. Mayor Gary Brown will then address issues involving the City of Salem. During new and miscellaneous business, Mayor Brown and Superintendent Bryson would like to discuss a new fuel system at the airport. After approval of bills presented by City Clerk Mary Happel, the Board will then go into Closed Session for the purpose of discussing real estate and personnel. The regular meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.

Several students representing the vocal and instrumental music departments of Salem High School traveled to the University of Missouri-Columbia Friday, May 5, to compete at the annual State Music Festival. Students are eligible to attend this state festival by receiving a 1 rating at the district music festival. Receiving a 1 rating were the Girls' Double Quartet consisting of Alexa Bragg, Amy Huitt, Houlie Ibrahim, Mariah Krueger, Natasha Krueger, Chastity Lo, Sarah Medley, and Amy Padgett. They were directed and accompanied by vocal music instructor, Catherine Dent. Receiving 2 ratings were vocalists Alex Bay and Colton Malott and instrumentalists Amber Blaylock and Sarah Medley.

The Salem Baseball Tigers are scheduled to travel to Steelville today for non-conference play against the Cardinals starting at 4:30. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio and online at ksmoradio.com.

The Salem Golf Team will participate in districts today at Sullivan while the Salem Track Teams will have the SCA Conference meet.

The Salem Tiger Tennis Teams will host Richland today starting at 4:30 at the Salem City Park.

The finale of a four-game set between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Washington Nationals was postponed due to heavy rain. The Cardinals took two of three from the Nationals, but had their three game winning streak snapped on Saturday. The Nationals did not immediately announce a makeup date. The Cardinals went 4-2 on the road trip through Atlanta and Washington. The Cardinals will be back at Busch Stadium tonight to face the Philadelphia Phillies starting at 6:55 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

Jose Guillen hit a three-run homer in Kansas City's five-run seventh inning, as the Royals ruined Scott Baker's no-hit bid and beat the Twins, 7-5, in the rubber match of a three-game series. The rally made a winner out of Gil Meche (2-2), who gave up four runs on seven hits and two walks in six innings. Joakim Soria allowed a run in the ninth, but retired the side for his sixth save of the season for Kansas City, which took the final two contests of this series and has won four of five overall. The Royals, who are in first place in the Central Division, will host the Chicago White Sox tonight.

Funeral services for Leslie Daniel Lane of Rolla, age 81, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the First Assembly of God in Rolla. Interment will be in the Hudgens Cemetery in rural Rolla with full military honors. Memorials are suggested to the First Assembly of God in Rolla. All arrangements are under the direction of James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.

Funeral services for Adam Land of Salem, age 23, will be held today at 1:00 at Wilson Mortuary. Visitation will be today from 11:00 till service time. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral services for Melissa L. McMurry of Salem, age 34, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at Wilson Mortuary. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 9:30 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorial may be made to the McMurry family for funeral expenses.

Memorial services for William A. Andrews of Rolla, age 86, will be held Saturday, May 16th at 2:00 at the First Presbyterian Church in Rolla. Memorials are suggested to the William Andrews Civil Engineering Scholarship at MST, First Presbyterian Church of Rolla, Rolla Kiwanis club or charity of you choice. All the arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.

Funeral services for Hilda B. Clinton of Salem, age 79, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time on Wednesday. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.
