An accident occurred at 9:50 am Saturday morning that took the life of a Salem woman. According to the Highway Patrol report 50-year-old Joy E. King, driving a 1995 Cadillac Deville, ran off the roadway at a high rate of speed, struck a curb and then a parked semi-trailer, and caught fire. Dent County Deputy Coroner Benjamin Pursifull pronounced King dead at the scene and the body was taken to the Dent County Memorial Chapel. According to the report King was wearing a seat restraint when the accident occurred and the air bags were deployed. The Cadillac was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing.
The Dent County Commissioners regular meeting was Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In public comments Red Cummings inquired about the status of the bridge replacement on Dent County Road 3210. Commissioner Gary Larson stated that the Commission was still waiting on BRO Funds from MODOT and that once they were approved or denied the County would proceed. Cummings went on to inquire about whether County funds were going in to the building of the law enforcement shooting range. Commissioner Larson said that there were no cash expenditures, but that the County was hauling some dirt so there would be County fuel and manpower going into the range. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles stated that the range was for Dent County and Salem law enforcement departments’ use and that the previously used range on private property had changed hands and was no longer available. Commissioner Dennis Purcell added that the improvements of the range would expand the types of firearms that law enforcement could certify on and practice with. In the road report District 1 Commissioner Purcell said that grading was being done on Dent County Roads 6220, 5170 and 5220, brush was being cut on Dent County Road 6220, two men were hauling brown rock, and that one man was stockpiling white rock at the Road and Bridge Department. District 2 Commissioner Larson said that grading was being done on Dent County Roads 2020, 4280, and 3330, that materials were being hauled to county road 4280, one man was screening rock and that one man was hauling brown rock. Presiding Commissioner Skiles congratulated Officer Wayne Becker on being named the recipient of the Richard P. Easter Award for his work in combating internet crime. Skiles went on to say that only one law enforcement person in the state is named to this award annually. Skiles updated the Commission relative to Terry Frost’s request to see current surveys included in Dent County Surveyor’s Plat Books covering his last two terms of office concluding at the end of 2012. Mr. Frost’s request was been referred to the Dent County Prosecutor’s and Dent County Recorder’s offices. Commissioner Gary Larson, as a result of a letter to the editor in the Salem News, wanted to make sure the public understood that the Commission was not asked for a vote of support by SMDH, but Hospital Administrator Pryor did encourage patrons to contact their legislators relative to the issue. All three Commissioners indicated they have been in contact with their legislators. The Commissioners voted to pay the bills. The next meeting of the Commissioners is Monday morning at 9:00 in the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.
The Missouri Department of Transportation's Central District filled more than 10,000 potholes with about 350 tons of asphalt as part of the department's Pothole Patrol, which ran from March 18th through April 15th. Statewide for that same period, maintenance crews filled about 75,000 potholes with more than 3,000 tons of asphalt. The department launched the Pothole Patrol statewide on March 18th as a month-long effort to concentrate on patching potholes and keeping highways smooth and safe for motorists. The goal of the initiative was twofold to patch potholes as quickly as possible and get information to the public on the variety of ways to contact MoDOT with a road concern. Even though the Pothole Patrol has wound down, MoDOT asks motorists to continue to contact the department anytime they see a pothole or other highway concern. Montauk State Hatchery will be holding the annual Kids Free Fishing Day Saturday, May 4th from 6:30 am to 8:15 pm. The entire portion of the spring branch will be reserved for kids 15 years and under. Many rainbow trout will be stocked to help ensure that all youths have a enjoyable time. Free hot dogs and soda for lunch. Nature related activities will take place throughout the day and prizes will be awarded. Kids can pick up their free tag starting Friday afternoon, or all day on Saturday. The registration tent will be by the fish cleaning station. Please provide your own fishing pole if possible. The Salem Tiger Baseball team lost to the Sullivan Eagles on Thursday, 12-5, in a five inning rain shortened game. Lane Stluka and Brady Floyd each drove in two runs apiece for Salem, who drops to 11-6 on the year. The Tigers will play Steelville on Monday.
Barret Jackman's first career playoff goal came with 50.4 seconds to play as the St. Louis Blues took a 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings in Game 2 of this Western Conference quarterfinal series. Patrik Berglund tied the game early in the third period to back a 28-save effort by Brian Elliott for the Blues, who now own a 2-0 lead in this best-of- seven series after consecutive 2-1 victories. St. Louis is hoping to avenge last year's sweep at the hands of the Kings in the conference semifinals as the series heads back to L.A. for Game 3 on Saturday. You can hear the game on KSMO at 8:30.
Allen Craig and Pete Kozma drove in two runs apiece to lead the St. Louis Cardinals past the Milwaukee Brewers, 6-5, in the opener of a four-game set at Miller Park. Yadier Molina and David Freese both added two hits and an RBI for the Cardinals, winners in seven of their last 10 games. Jake Westbrook (2-1) yielded just one run on six hits while striking out four over six innings. Edward Mujica allowed one run, but stranded a runner in the ninth to pick up his seventh save of the season. The Cardinals and Brewers play again tonight and you can hear it on KSMO at 6:35.
Thursday's game between the Tampa Bay Rays and the Kansas City Royals has been postponed after the arrival of a winter storm created unplayable conditions. A makeup date has yet to be determined. The Royals will start a three-game series with the White Sox tonight.

Patricia Ann Stacey of Salem, age 92, donated her body to science, there will be no service. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.
