On Monday, April 30th at approximately 12:15 in the afternoon, the Salem Police Department received information that Gas Plus, located at McArthur and Rolla Road, had been robbed. Officers responded to the scene where information was obtained in reference to the suspects and events of the robbery. The area was canvassed and at approximately 12:20, the suspect, a 27-year old Salem man, was taken into custody in the vicinity of Grand St. and Fourth St. Further investigation led to the arrest of a second suspect, a 28-year old Salem man. Both suspects were incarcerated pending the issuance of warrants. The exact amount of money taken has not yet been determined at this time. The money was not recovered.
The Salem Police Department has released their reports. On Friday, April 13th at 1:00 in the early morning, an officer was dispatched to Wal-Mart in reference to a disturbance. The investigation led to the arrest of a 49-year old Salem male for disorderly conduct. He was incarcerated and will be issued a summons to appear in court upon his release. Later that afternoon at 1:37, an officer was dispatched to Wal-Mart again in reference to a shoplifter. The investigation led to the arrest of a 32-year old male and a 62-year old male, both of Salem, for stealing merchandise valued at $53.99. They were issued a summons to appear in court and released. Later on that evening at 5:37, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of a 26-year old Salem female for driving while intoxicated. She was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Saturday, April 14th at 2:00 in the early morning, an officer was dispatched to Casey’s located on Macarthur in reference to a theft of fuel. The investigation revealed that a 35-year old Salem male failed to pay for fuel. He was located and he returned and paid for the fuel. Later that afternoon at 12:49, an officer was dispatched to the 800 block of East Fourth in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown took a seat valued at $375.00 off of a 1987 Honda motorcycle. Later on that evening at 9:17, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation led to the arrest of a 25-year old Salem female on a fugitive warrant from Pulaski County. She posted bond and was released. On Sunday, April 15th at 1:20 in the early morning, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation led to the arrest of a 22-year old Summersville male for driving while intoxicated. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Monday, April 16th at 1:09 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to Casey’s General Store on Macarthur in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that a 23-year old Salem female of took $300 cash from the cash drawer. She was arrested, issued a summons to appear in court, and released. An accident occurred at 7:24 Tuesday morning in Phelps County on Route J about five miles South of I-44. According to the highway patrol report, a 2004 Chevrolet Malibu driven by 18-year old Danielle Dickinson of Licking was traveling southbound, slid off the left side of the roadway and overturned. Dickinson suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center in Rolla. She was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Malibu was totaled and was towed by Lucas Garage of Edgar Springs.
US Bank is sponsoring the Tuesday, May 8th Salem Area Chamber of Commerce luncheon meeting at the Southwest Baptist University Salem campus located at 501 South Grand Street. Salem's local Branch Manager, Mike McCluskey, and US Bank's Treasury Management Specialist, Kelly Vansyoc will give a presentation titled "Small Business Banking in the 20-teens". The University Missouri Extension is offering a “It’s So Easy to Preserve” Food Preservation Series that features the latest research and water bath canning fruits and vegetables. Each of the three workshops will feature different processes and include hands-on demonstration of methods and equipment. All sessions will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, 802 Hwy 32 East in Salem. The first session of the three-part series, “Making Fantastic Jams and Jellies - Water Bath Jam & Freezer Jelly” will be held on Friday, May 4th. The workshop will review harvesting, using, and storing fresh produce from the garden or Farmers Market, and freezing procedures to assure quality results. On Thursday, June 17th, “Salsa from Your Garden” will highlight water bath canning techniques and procedures for processing high acid foods such as tomato salsas, and fruits. “Home Canning the Safe Way” will be the third session of the series, schedule for Monday, June 21st. Individuals may register for the entire “It’s So Easy to Preserve” Food Preservation Series, or select individual workshops. Pre-registration is required with a maximum attendance of 10 participants, so register early. Registration deadline is one week prior to the session. The fee is $10 for one session, or $30 for all 3. David Freese blasted the go-ahead three-run homer during a four-run fifth inning and the St. Louis Cardinals downed the Pittsburgh Pirates, 10-7, in the opener of a three-game set at Busch Stadium on Tuesday. Matt Holliday cracked a solo homer among his three hits, Yadier Molina added a pair of hits and scored three times, and Rafael Furcal contributed a two-run homer for the Cardinals. Adam Wainwright (1-3) gave up four runs on five hits and one walk while fanning six over seven innings. The Cards and Pirates play again tonight at 6:40 and you can hear it on KSMO.
Austin Jackson had four hits, including a two- run double, leading the Detroit Tigers to a 9-3 win over the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday. Royals starter Luke Hochevar (2-2) gave up nine runs in just four innings, including five with no outs in the first, to take the loss. The Royals and Tigers play again this afternoon.
