The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. At the meeting, District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5130, 5140 and 5510 and the rest of the District 1 crew would be patching various chip and seal roads throughout the district. District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that grading would be done in the Boss area on Dent County Roads 4370 and 5240. Tune also said that grading would be done and material would be hauled to Dent County Roads 2200, 2270, 2370 and 3270. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he would be attending a South Central County Commissioners Association meeting this morning in Houston. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that a premiere showing of the new Salem and Dent County website will be Monday, May 12
th at My Place starting at noon. Also at the meeting, the Commissioners reported that they met with FEMA officials on Tuesday about all the damage that was done throughout the county due to flooding. Dent County has a FEMA representative that will work directly with the Commission on getting the roads and bridges back in shape. The next meeting of the Commission will be Monday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.
The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released their reports involving a burglary and an assault. On Tuesday, April 29th at 6:05 in the evening, the Dent County Sheriff's Department received a report of an altercation that had taken place between two females, ages 54 and 28, at a residence located off of Highway 32 near Boss. It was reported that the 54-year old female entered the residence without permission and assaulted the 28-year old resident, took two cell phones from the residence and had already left the residence when the incident was reported to the sheriff's department. 54-year old Robin L. Moore of Boss was located and taken into custody. A warrant was issued and Moore was charged with one misdemeanor count of assault in the Third Degree, two misdemeanor counts of stealing and one felony count of burglary in the First Degree. A Cash Only bond was set at a total of $10,000.
The Dent County Fire Protection District responded to a structure fire call last Tuesday, April 29th, to the Pratt, Mitchell and Company building at 3rd and Washington Streets. Firemen arrived at the scene at 11:10 that evening to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the front wall. Eleven firefighters extinguished the blaze and the State Fire Marshall was contacted. The cause of the fire was electrical and occurred at the southeast corner of the wood framing. The area was a total loss and the firemen returned to the station at 2:09 in the morning. There were no injuries reported.
The Salem Police Department released their reports involving thefts. On April 13th at 8:37 in the evening, an officer was sent to Wildwood Lane in reference to a theft of a gold wedding set and a white gold wedding ring valued at $5,000 from a residence. On April 14th at 6:00 in the morning, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft of fuel. The report revealed that a person or persons unknown took 10 gallons of gasoline out of a school bus in the 800 block of East Third. At 2:55 that afternoon, an officer was dispatched to Wal-Mart in reference to a shoplifter. The report led to the arrest of a 64-year old Salem male for stealing $4.97 in merchandise. He was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. On April 15th at 2:16 in the afternoon, an officer was sent to the 1400 block of West Franklin in reference to someone stealing city utilities. The investigation of the report revealed that a or persons unknown were stealing electric. At 5:23 that evening, an officer was detailed to the 1800 block of South Oak in reference to a theft. The report revealed that a 57-year old Salem female had stolen a bottle of vodka valued at $12.47 from Wal-Mart. She was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On April 17th at 7:43 in the morning, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft. The report revealed that a person or persons unknown took a Mongoose bicycle from the rack at the Upper Elementary School. The bike is valued at $150. Anyone with any information regarding these incidents, which are still under investigation, is being asked to please contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.
The Spring City Wide Yard Sale will be held this Saturday, May 3rd. To signup for a spot on the City Administration Parking Lot located at 4th and Iron Streets, call 729-4811. The deadline to reserve a spot on the city lot is TODAY. Yard Sale maps will be available at convenience stores, the City Administration Building and the Chamber Office in the Visitors Center. Copies of the map were also printed in the Tuesday edition of the Salem News.

The Sullivan Eagles, the #1 ranked team in Class 3, shutout the Salem Tigers in six innings yesterday, 12-0. Salem only managed four hits and four walks against the Eagles who scored three runs in the third and fourth innings and six runs in the sixth inning. Salem drops to 8-5 on the year and they are scheduled to be at West Plains today to face the Zizzers. If played, you can hear the game on KSMO Radio and online at www.ksmoradio.com.
The St. Louis Cardinals will host the Chicago Cubs this weekend starting tonight at 6:55, tomorrow at 2:25 and Sunday night at 6:45. All three games can be heard on KSMO Radio.
Sidney Ponson pitched eight strong innings for the Texas Rangers and got some timely hitting on home runs from Ian Kinsler and Ramon Vazquez in outdueling the Kansas City Royals and Zack Greinke for a 2-1 win at Rangers Ballpark. Greinke (3-1) was equally impressive allowing only two solo home runs and four hits with no walks and a season-high nine strikeouts in seven innings. The Royals’ lone run came on a Mark Grudzielanek's two-out RBI single in the third. Kansas City has dropped three of its last four. David DeJesus had two hits for the Royals who will continue their six-game road trip in Cleveland starting tonight.

The Spring Sports Banquet will be held on Thursday, May 15th at the Salem High School Cafeteria starting at 6:30 pm. There will be a night of recognition for the Varsity and Junior Varsity baseball, track, golf and tennis athletes and their parents are invited to attend to honor the 2008 Spring Season.

Funeral services for for Dorothy P. Halbrook of Sullivan, age 70, will be held today at noon at the Eaton Funeral Home Southside Chapel in Sullivan. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to the Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital in St. Louis.
Memorial services for Roger Allen Hogeboom of Salem, age 67, will be held today at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be today from noon until time of service. Memorials are suggested to the ALS Association.
Funeral services for Hallie Lee Clonts of Steelville, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Chapel in Steelville. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery.
Funeral services for Don Boettler of St. James, age 57, will be held Saturday afternoon at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will also be Saturday from 11:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery in Salem.
