The Dent County Soil & Water Conservation District held their Board of Supervisor Election/Open House on Tuesday. The results of the election were: Area I, which covers Watkins and Texas Township, Paul Heithold received 28 votes and in Area III, which covers Meramac, Osage, Linn and Sinkin Townships, James Crocker had 17 votes while Montie Black got 14 votes. A total of 59 votes were cast. 

So many veterans feel confused about benefits and services they have earned. There is so much to know...and so many changes from one year to the next. That is why the nonprofit Disabled American Veteran’s offers help. The DAV Mobile Service Office will be in Salem to personally provide the best counseling and claim filing assistance available. Like all Disabled American Veteran services, help from the Mobile Service Office is free to all veterans and members of their families. The DAV Mobile Service Office will be in Salem Tuesday, May 13, 2014; from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the parking lot behind the City Administrative Office located at 400 North Iron.

Young anglers will have opportunities to catch fish and learn about fishing at Montauk State Park’s Kids’ Fishing Day. This event will be held from 6:30 a.m. to 8:15 p.m. this Saturday, May 3^rd at Montauk State Park. The event is being sponsored by the Missouri Department of Conservation in cooperation with Missouri Department of Natural Resources. At Kids’ Fishing Day, children age 15 and under can pick up their free trout tag at the registration booth from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 2^nd or on the day of the event. The spring branch from the CCC Spillway to the Social Hole will be reserved for the youth anglers and stocked with trout all day. Volunteers will be on hand to help out. Children are encouraged to bring their own fishing equipment. Parents are welcome to help the kids, but only one pole may be used between the helper and the child. Adults are not allowed to fish by themselves.  Education is also part of Kids’ Fishing Day. Throughout the day, seminars will be held on topics related to trout fishing, fly tying, fly casting, and other topics. There will be drawings for door prizes throughout the day and individuals must be present to win. Volunteers are needed to help with this event. Individuals wishing to volunteer do not need to be experienced anglers. The Community Wide Yard Sale will be held this Saturday throughout town and maps of where yard sales will be held at homes are available at convenience stores around town and in Tuesday’s Salem News. If you would like to have a location to hold a yard sale away from your home, remember you can rent space at the parking lot behind the City Administration Building at 4^th and Iron Streets for $8.00 per space. Spaces are reserved on a first come, first served basis. Call Karen Happel at the City Administrative offices at 729-4811 by 4:00 Friday afternoon to reserve your space or spaces or drop by the offices at the 400 North Iron Street.

In the first week of the spring turkey season, hunters checked 22,348 turkeys and that is a four percent increase from 2013, and is a seven percent above the previous five-year average. It also is the largest first-week harvest since 2007. Top turkey-harvest counties in the first week of the season were Franklin with 504 birds checked, Texas with 451 and Callaway with 394. The season continues through May 11. Six of eight first-week regional harvest totals were up compared to last year. Those were Central 3,503 (up 6 percent), Kansas City 2,559 (up 4 percent), Northeast 2,725 (up 5 percent), Northwest 2,537 (up 12 percent), Ozark 2,990 (up 6 percent), and Southwest 3,774 (up 13 percent). Opening-week harvests were down in the Southeast 2,434 (down 8 percent) and St. Louis 1,831 (down 9 percent) regions. The Conservation Department recorded three firearms-related turkey hunting incidents during the first week of the season. Two involved hunters who mistook other hunters for turkeys. The victim in the third incident was between the shooter and a turkey and was caught in the line of fire. The shooters’ ages ranged from 42 to 64. In two of the incidents, the shooter and victim were hunting together but had separated.

The Dent-Phelps R-3 School is sponsoring a community health fair, science fair, art exhibit, and academic display of student work. The event will be held this Thursday, May 1, 2014 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. The school is located a mile from Highway 72 on Highway C. A Sloppy Joe dinner will be served, free of charge. Final sign-ups for the City of Salem Summer Youth Baseball/Softball/T-Ball Program will be held TODAY and Friday, May 2^nd from 4:00 to 6:00 in the front lobby of the Salem Community Center @ the Armory. The cost is $20 per child and it is for ages 4-13. For more information contact Parks & Rec Director Greg Nash at 729-6290. Coaches are also needed.

There will be a FREE Girls’ Softball Clinic for girls age 10-13 today at the Salem City Park Field from 5:30 to 7:30. This Clinic is today ONLY.

The Salem Baseball Tigers will play at Plato today in a game that was added to replace the game with Potosi that was unable to be made up. Salem is 5-10 on the year and 1-4 in the SCA. Start time is 4:30 and this game will NOT be aired on KSMO Radio.

The Salem Tennis team finished 2^nd in the Salem Invitational on Wednesday, behind only Willow Springs. Salem will be in Licking today at 4:00.

Allen Craig went 4-for-5 with a solo homer and three RBI in the St. Louis Cardinals' 9-3 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday. Matt Adams hit a three-run homer for the Cardinals, who avoided a three-game sweep. Jon Jay went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. St. Louis starter Shelby Miller (3-2) remained unbeaten in his career against Milwaukee, giving up three runs on six hits with three walks over six-plus innings. The Cardinals have the day off today before starting a three-game series with the Chicago Cubs on Friday.

Alcides Escobar's two-run double in the seventh inning lifted the Kansas City Royals to a 4-2 win over the Toronto Blue Jays in the middle test of a three-game set. Eric Hosmer finished 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI for the Royals, winners in three straight. The Royals and Blue Jays play again at 7:10 tonight at Kauffman Stadium to finish up their series.

Funeral services for Concetta Pardee of St. James, age 99, will be held Friday morning at 10:00 at the St. Anthony Catholic Church in Rosati. Visitation will be held today from 5:00 to 7:00 at the James and Gahr Chapel in St. James. Interment will be in the St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery in Rosati. A prayer service will be held Thursday at 5:00 with Father Charles Pardee at the James and Gahr Chapel.

Funeral services for Virgil L. Pruett of Salem, age 99, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Interment will be in the Bonne Creek Cemetery in Licking.

Funeral services for Beatrice Marie Amptmann of Cuba, 86, will be held Saturday at 10:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery.

Funeral services for Steven Ernest Broyles of Salem, age 67, will be held Saturday, May 10th at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Friday, May 9th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Project Win.
