The Salem R-80 Board of Education will be conducting a special meeting at the district administrative offices boardroom tonight beginning at 6:00 pm. The purpose of the special meeting will be to discuss design of the building project with McKinstry. The special meeting of the Salem R-80 Board of Education is open to the public. 

The Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast will take place from 7:30 to 8:30 Saturday morning, May 4th at the Grace Community Church. This new event is presented by the City of Salem and the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce. The continental style breakfast is free to attendees. The program includes prayer by members of our local clergy for city, county, state, federal and world governments, along with prayer for the United States Military. There will be a song and a special music quartet arrangement.  According to Mayor Gary Brown, the way things are going in this world; all levels of government need prayer, from the smallest to the largest unit.  Chamber president Scott Roberts commented that the purpose of the event is to call together the community to stand together and intercede on behalf of our city and nation, its leaders and the challenges we face. A Weed and Brush Control Field Day will be held Thursday, May 2nd, at 6:00 in the evening in Dent County at Fleener Farms near Jadwin. This program, sponsored by Dent County MU Extension and the Dent County Soil and Water Conservation District, will feature timely information for landowners who wish to better control unwanted weeds and brush in their pasture and hayfields. Topics will include identification of common spring and summer weed and brush species, proper timing of spray application for targeted species, herbicide options for optimum control, calibration techniques and demonstration of both a boom and boomless sprayer. Directions to the field day are as follows: From Salem, take Highway 19 south 5 miles to K Highway. Take a right on K Highway one mile to Z Highway. Left on Z Highway 5.8 miles to County Road 6305. Make a left on CR 6305 about 100 yards to field entrance. No RSVP is required. The Dent-Phelps R-3 School is sponsoring the annual Spring Jubilee this Thursday, May 2nd from 5:30 to 7:00 pm. A free Sloppy Joe dinner will be served beginning at 5:30. A community health fair will be featured; along with the display of student art work and Science Fair projects. There will surely be something for everyone. Dent-Phelps R-3 is located on Highway C about a mile from Highway 72. Everyone is welcome to attend and enjoy this fun and educational evening.

Montauk State Hatchery will be holding the annual Kids Free Fishing Day Saturday, May 4th from 6:30 am to 8:15 pm. The entire portion of the spring branch will be reserved for kids 15 years and under. Many rainbow trout will be stocked to help ensure that all youths have a enjoyable time. Free hot dogs and soda for lunch. Nature related activities will take place throughout the day and prizes will be awarded. Kids can pick up their free tag starting Friday afternoon, or all day on Saturday. The registration tent will be by the fish cleaning station. Please provide your own fishing pole if possible. The Dora Falcons banged out 12 hits and scored 11 runs to beat the Salem Tigers on Tuesday by the score of 11-3. Salem had 10 hits of their own but stranded 13 men as their record falls to 10-5 on the year. Brady Floyd and Darwin Flaherty each had two hits for the Tigers, who will host the Cabool Bulldogs in a key SCA battle this afternoon at 2:30. Due to the Cardinal Baseball game, the game will not be carried live on KSMO Radio, but can be heard live on ksmoradio.com and seen on fidelitylocal6.com. The game will be rebroadcast in it's entirety starting at 5:30 on KSMO Radio. Salem is 5-1 in the SCA and a win would mean an outright SCA Conference championship for the Tigers.

The Salem Tiger Tennis team lost to Osage on Tuesday, 3-6, in their last regular season match of the year. District play begins for Salem on Tuesday, May 7th in Salem.

Alexander Steen scored twice, including the game-winner with 6:34 left in overtime to lift the St. Louis Blues to a 2-1 victory over the defending champion Los Angeles Kings in Game 1 of their Western Conference quarterfinal series from Scottrade Center. Steen scored a power-play goal in the first, and then added a short-handed tally in the extra session after Los Angeles goaltender Jonathan Quick misplayed the puck behind his own net. Brian Elliott stopped 28-of-29 shots for the Blues, who will play the Kings in Game 2 on Thursday.

Jaime Garcia pitched eight strong innings as Matt Holliday's two-run home run lifted the St. Louis Cardinals to a 2-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds at Busch Stadium. Garcia (3-1) scattered just seven hits and a run for St. Louis, which snapped a three-game losing skid and knotted the three-game set with Cincinnati. Carlos Beltran went 3-for-4. The Cardinals and Reds play again this afternoon and you can hear that game on KSMO Radio starting at 12:10.

Mike Moustakas drove in three runs and James Shields overcame a shaky first inning to get the win against his former club, as the Kansas City Royals beat the Tampa Bay Rays, 8-2, in the opener of a three-game series at Kauffman Stadium. Shields (2-2) tossed seven innings and retired the final 13 batters he faced. He gave up a two-run homer in the opening frame before settling down to allow just two hits over his final six innings. The Royals and Tampa Bay Rays play again tonight at 7:10.

Funeral services for Mary Catherine Waller of Greenwood and formerly of Potosi, age 87, will be held today at 1:00 at the Potosi United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time at the church. Interment will be in the Red Bud Memorial Cemetery in Potosi. Memorials may be made to the Sayers Senior Center of Potosi.

Funeral services for Steven Joseph Soppe of Rolla, age 54, will be held today at 2:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary of Rolla. Interment will be in the Edgar Cemetery in Dent County.

Memorial services for Marvin Alex Dotson of Salem, age 81, will be held Thursday at 7:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 5:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Marvin Dotson Tree Fund.

Funeral services for Garnett “Rose” Juilian of Salem, age 98, will be Friday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00 at the Chapel. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer Association.

A Celebration of Life service for Gayle Rutledge Mincher, formerly of Salem, will be held Sunday at 4:00 at the Salem Christian Church.

Funeral services for Arthur “Art” Howald of Steelville, age 94, will be held Monday, May 6th at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Sunday from 4:00 to 8:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Steelville First Baptist Church Building Fund or the Community Child Care Center.
