He said that the sheriff would be getting in touch with emergency responders to see if they can be there. Skiles went on to say that the State Legislature has introduced bills to “fix” the use tax issue that would penalize counties on the personal sales of vehicles and also from some purchases across state lines. He said that House Bills 2100 and 1640, and Senate Bill 561 are on the fast track in an attempt to correct this issue. He also said that Senate Bill 652 for county budgets to be amended for receiving less sales tax has been approved and will be sent to the house. Skiles also wanted to remind the commission that the Farmer’s Market would be opening this Saturday. The commission also received a request from the Council for a Healthy Dent County for a $5,000 “in kind” donation of white rock for the proposed hiking and biking trails around the Upper Elementary School. The commission needed to clarify the request before it could be voted on. The commissioners then approved the transfer of $1,250 to the Salem Senior Center Holding Fund that was needed after the budget was amended last week. For the second consecutive year, employees of The Doe Run Company’s Buick Resource Recycling Division (BRRD) are assisting children by donating more than $4,000 to various programs in five Southeast Missouri communities. Commonly called “backpack programs,” these programs provide much needed school supplies, clothing or food, sent home in students’ backpacks, to help provide assistance to families in need. BRRD will present five schools with individual checks for $817.20 to support their efforts. School recipients include the Salem Upper Elementary. BRRD employees donated similar amounts to each school’s backpack program in 2011. BRRD employees raised money for the program by creating themed gift baskets, which they auctioned off during a staff celebration. Basket themed ranged from children’s apparel and move night-themed baskets to sports and recreation-themed baskets. Proceeds raised from the auction were donated directly to local schools.
