The City of Salem Board of Aldermen and the Planning & Zoning Board of Commissioners will be conducting a Workshop, called by City Administrator Clayton Lucas and Chairman Jerry Craig, on Monday, April 30th in the City Hall Council Chambers located at 202 North Washington, beginning at 6:00 pm. The Workshop will be discussing the occupancy inspections for rental properties and resolving map issues. The Workshop is open to the public.
Missouri hunters shot more turkeys during the first week of the spring hunting season than they did during the same period last year. This is the first increase since 2004. This year’s first-week harvest of 21,765 represents a 15.8 percent increase from 2011. It also is 2.1 percent more than the previous five-year average. Top counties were Franklin with 467 turkeys checked, Ste. Genevieve with 439 and Texas with 433. Resource Scientist Jason Isabelle supervises wild-turkey management for the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC). The increase is in large part due to the good hatch that was observed throughout much of Missouri in 2011. Jakes, as one-year-old male turkeys are commonly known, made up 26.4 percent of this year’s first-week harvest. That is a substantial increase from last year. Hunters checked 5,748 jakes during the first week of the season, and that is a 61-percent increase from 2011. The number of mature gobblers in the harvest was only up by about 800 birds, so birds hatched last year accounted for nearly three-quarters of the harvest increase. Weather, which can significantly influence turkey harvest, probably was a wash during the first week of Missouri’s 21-day spring turkey season. The week included some rain and wind, which typically reduces hunter success, but these conditions were interspersed with ideal hunting weather. First-week harvest figures were up in all eight regions of the state, ranging from an increase of 11.3 percent in the Central Region to 21.3 percent in the Ozark Region. Good nesting and brood-rearing conditions could enable the state’s turkey flock to build on gains made last year. Missouri hunters also had an above average first week in terms of safety. MDC recorded two firearms-related hunting incidents.
Roadwork continues in our area this week. In Dent County a bridge replacement is under way on the Route NN Bridge over Dry Fork Creek west of Route F. The bridge is currently closed to traffic through early June. Motorists are advised to find an alternate route around the construction. Culvert pipe repair in various locations will take place today through Wednesday, May 2nd on Route DD between Route H and the end of state maintenance. One lane will be open, and crews will flag traffic through the work area. Route 72 in Reynolds County will be reduced to one lane as Missouri Department of Transportation crews replace pipe beneath roadway. This section of roadway is located from Route 21 to Route 32. Weather permitting work will take place today through Thursday, May 3rd from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm daily. The work zone will be marked with signs. The Salem Tiger Baseball in Potosi Friday afternoon was postponed due to rain.
The Salem Tiger and Steelville Cardinal game originally scheduled for today has been cancelled to allow Salem to play in the May 26th game at Busch Stadium. The game will not be rescheduled. Salem will host Sullivan Thursday at 4:30 in the next scheduled game.
Salem Tiger Basketball Senior and SCA Player of the Year Jacob Kettner was invited to play in the Grizzly All-star Basketball Classic in West Plains on Tuesday, May 1st. This is the first time anyone from Salem has been invited to participate in this game. Good Luck Jacob!

Jonathan Quick stopped 28 shots to help the L.A. Kings take a 3-1 victory over the St. Louis Blues in Game one of the Western Conference semifinal series on Saturday. David Backes scored the Blue’s only goal while Brian Elliott stopped 26 shots in the loss. Game two will be in St. Louis tonight at 8:00 and you can hear it on KSMO Radio.
Jonathan Lucroy hit a go-ahead two-run double as the Milwaukee Brewers salvaged a win in the finale of a three-game set with the St. Louis Cardinals, 3-2, on Sunday. Jamie Garcia (2-1) suffered the loss after surrendering three runs on nine hits and one walk with six strikeouts. Rafael Furcal finished 2 for 5 with an RBI single. The Cards have the day off today.
Josh Willingham went 3-for-5 with a two-run triple and two runs scored as the Minnesota Twins topped the Kansas City Royals, 7-4, in the finale of a rain-shortened two-game series at Target Field. Mike Moustakas clubbed a solo homer and added an RBI single, while Eric Hosmer and Alcides Escobar had an RBI each for the Royals, who had their three-game winning streak halted. Billy Butler added three hits in the loss. Bruce Chen (0-3) was hammered for six runs on six hits and two walks while fanning one in just 2 2/3 innings of work. The Royals and Tigers start a three game series tonight.
