The Dent County Commissioners regular meeting was held Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. At the meeting, Rich Hall from the US Forest Service office in Rolla and Tom Haines from the US Forest Service office in Salem were in to discuss with the Commission the legal and procedural requirements for spending the counties Title 3 monies. Dent County receives “PILT” (paying in lieu of taxes) money of which 25% goes into a Title 3 fund. The other 75% goes into a Title 1 and Mineral Fund, which can be used for roads, schools and other purposes. Dent County currently has $141,791.48 in their Title 3 account. Per the discussion, the Commission was given a couple of avenues that they could pursue whereby they could use the money, which if not spent or obligated by September 30, 2012, will be returned to the U.S. Treasury. The Commission agreed to have further discussion of the options that were presented and will address this issue again at anther Commissioner meeting. Chris Mathes, Manager of the Farmer’s Market in Salem, was in to discuss with the Commission the need for some gravel in some holes on the parking lot and asked if it could be done before Saturday, opening day of the Farmer’s Market in Salem. He was told it would be taken care of. In the road report, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that rock would be hauled and grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5380 and 6080, and that grading would also be done on county roads 5580 and 6070. Purcell also said that patching of the chip and seal surface continues on Dent County Road 6180. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2020 and 2303, and road would be hauled to county road 2303, as it appears that a weekend resident had taken all the white rock off the road for his driveway. Larson also reported that two workers were screening brown rock and that work would be done on grader #27. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that seven people: Skiles, Commissioner Dennis Purcell, Dent County Sheriff Rick Stallings, Deputy Justin Roderman, Dennis Floyd and Marty Farrar from the Salem Police Department and Brad Nash representing the City of Salem, Dent County Emergency Management Director and Fire Chief for the Dent County Fire Protection District, all went to Kearney, Nebraska for a demonstration of the Interop-Solutions, LLC system that coordinates inter-communications between different systems. Dent County Sheriff Rick Stallings stopped by the meeting to discuss the March monthly report for the Sheriff’s office. It was noted that thefts were up dramatically, which Stallings indicated that most were stolen air conditioners and such for the copper wiring. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse at 9:00 am, and that meeting is open to the public.
The City of Salem City-Wide Yard Sales will occur this Saturday, May 1st all over town and maps are available at convenience stores around town as well as the City Administration Building, the Chamber of Commerce Office in the Visitors Center and copies of the map will also be printed in the Salem News. A central sale location will be held behind the City Administration Building
The Doe Run Company’s Southeast Missouri Mining and Milling Division (SEMO) and Buick Resource Recycling Division (BRRD) have made a donation to the Quad County Fire Protection District that will allow for the replacement of a pump and motor on the district’s tanker truck. The donation will help the district better meet the needs of the residents and businesses in our district, which covers 250 square miles in and around Viburnum, Mo. The tanker truck is more than 20 years old, and the pump recently has shown signs of wear. The $2,850 donation was made to the all-volunteer district in April. The Quad County Fire Protection District includes 20 volunteer firefighters, with two to 18 years of service.
The City of Salem and Pro-Energy will announce a memorandum of Understanding this morning at 10:00 at the city hall council chambers. This agreement will be the first step in the city pursuing an alternative power source in the form of Bio-Mass. The meeting today is open to the public for questions.

The Salem Baseball Tigers will travel to Stoutland for tournament play today and tomorrow, weather permitting. Salem enters the game with a 5-10 record. The games will NOT be broadcast on KSMO Radio.
David Freese supplied the offense with a three-run homer and a career-high six RBI, as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the spiraling Braves, 10-4, to complete a four-game sweep at Busch Stadium. Freese finished 3-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored. Yadier Molina stroked a run-scoring double and added an RBI single for the Cardinals, who extended their longest winning streak of the season to five games. Tyler Greene had a solo blast for St. Louis, while Colby Rasmus scored four times. Cardinal’s starter Adam Wainwright improved his record to 4-1 after giving up three runs on six hits in six innings. The Cardinals start a three game series with Cincinnati tonight and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio starting at 6:55.
Jason Bartlett and Reid Brignac each drove in three runs and Matt Garza struck out nine in six innings to help the Tampa Bay Rays take down the Kansas City Royals, 11-1, in the first of a four- game set at Tropicana Field. Alberto Callaspo homered for the Royals, who have dropped three straight. Luke Hochevar (2-1) was shelled for nine runs on 11 hits in just 2 2/3 frames, his shortest outing of the season. The Royals and Rays will play again tonight.
Kansas City Royals have placed pitcher John Parrish on the 15-day disabled list; recalled pitcher Victor Marte from Omaha (PCL).

Funeral services for Lela Marie Ball of Salem, age 65, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the Morrison Cemetery in Salem. Memorials suggested to the Relay for Life “Patriots or Putters”.
A Memorial Service for Hugh Wilson Ford of Rolla, age 72, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the First Christian Church in Rolla. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
Graveside services for Thomas J. Clare, Jr. of Cameron, Missouri, formerly of Rolla, age 81, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the North Lawn Cemetery.
A Memorial Service for Louise A. Venn of Salem, age 76, will be held Saturday, May 1st at 2:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary of Salem. Internment will be private. Memorials are suggested to the Dent County Animal Shelter.
Memorial services for Raymond Neupert of St. James, age 85, will be held Sunday at 3:00 at hte James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be from 2:00 until service time. Interment will be in the J. B. Cemetery in St. Louis with a Military Honor Guard.
Funeral services for Louis "Spud" Burnham of Boss, age 64, will be held Monday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Green Forest Cemetery.
