Salem vocal and instrumental students traveled to the University of Missouri - Columbia campus on Friday to compete with students across the state in the District Music Festival. All of the Salem students who participating medalled at the event with Amanda Wood receiving a 1 rating on her vocal solo; Allison Hall received a 1 rating on her piano solo; and Janeen Hankinson receiving a 1 rating on her French horn solo. Students receiving a 2 rating were Amanda Wood with her baritone horn solo; the men’s double quartet; Jessica Braman with her vocal solo; and also Samantha Apperson with a vocal solo. Congratulations to these students on their achievement.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving assaults. On April 15^th at 8:58 in the evening, an officer heard yelling near the 500 block of North Jackson. The investigation of the yelling led the officer to a domestic disturbance at the corner of Jackson Street and Rolla Road. The report revealed that a 24-year old Salem male had assaulted an 18-year old Salem female. He was arrested and incarcerated pending the application of warrants. On April 17^th at 5:49 in the afternoon, an officer was sent to the 300 block of East Truman in reference to a domestic disturbance. The report revealed that a 34-year old Salem male had assaulted a 30-year old female, her 11-year old son and took her vehicle, a red and white 1998 Ford F-150. He was arrested and incarcerated pending the application of warrants. On April 18^th at 6:00 in the evening, an officer was detailed to the 600 block of East Hunt in reference to a domestic disturbance. The report revealed a 26-year old Salem male had assaulted a 23-year old Salem female. He was arrested and incarcerated pending the application of warrants. On April 23^rd at 7:30 in the evening, an officer was dispatched to the 900 block of West Center in reference to an assault. The report revealed a 17-year old Salem male had assaulted a 19-year old Salem male. He was arrested, issued a summons to appear in court and released.

An accident happened Friday morning at 7:45 in Crawford County on Highway 19 about three miles south of Cherryville. According to the highway patrol report, a 2006 Honda driven southbound by 26-year old William T. Mischke of Salem traveled off the right side of the roadway where the Honda overturned, coming to rest on top of Mischke. Mischke suffered moderate injuries and was taken by the Steelville Ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. Mischke was arrested for a DWI and several other traffic offenses. The Honda was removed from the scene by Miles Towing.

ATTENTION LIVESTOCK PROJECT MEMBERS!! There will be a MANDATORY Livestock Quality Assurance meeting on Tuesday, May 1^st at the Commons Youth Building beginning at 7:00 PM. You MUST attend this meeting if you plan to show and sell a market steer, pig, and/or lamb at the fair in August. Livestock Specialist Ted Cunningham will present the program. Last Monday night at the Bank of Salem Courtesy Room, there were 34 business people and leaders in attendance at the second town hall meeting. A number of different businesses were represented from Salem and Dent County. They included bankers, accounting, real estate, manufacturing, distribution, assembling and new business startups. There was even interest from tourist businesses just outside of the county. Issues were more clearly identified at this meeting.  Individuals volunteered to address many of these issues and assume leadership roles. First, the Target Area was selected and it will be Highway 19 from Spring Creek North to Spring Creek South, extending to the new park for soccer fields, as well as 3^rd, 4^th,and 5^th Streets Downtown. This helps focus the agenda by identifying the concentrated area of concern. Second, the Vision Statement was addressed by Connie Willman from the MRPC, and she will provide a draft statement for review. The focus will be to address issues that would revitalize the target area defined. Thirdly, individuals attending the meeting were divided into groups to write a situation statement, and objectives and were organized in the fields of Financial, Infrastructure, Beautification and Appearances, and Business Attraction and Expansion. A committee from those attending the meetings has being formed for each topic. Stan Podorski, Dustin Howard, and Mike Douglas have volunteered to provide the overall leadership for these Revitalization Efforts. Another meeting will be held at a later date that has yet to be announced.
