The Dent County Soil & Water Conservation District will be holding their Board of Supervisor Election/Open House today at the Dent County Soil & Water Conservation office located at 1012 East Scenic Rivers BLVD. Office hours for the election will be from 11:30 am to 5:30 pm. Refreshments will be served throughout the day. Be sure and stop by the office and vote.
Congratulations to the Salem Chamber Choir and instructor Elaine Russell for capturing the Most Outstanding Choir and the Adjudicator Awards at the National Music Festival in Nashville, Tennessee this past weekend. The choir has been asked to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York!
The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that work crews would be out with pitchforks and shovels cleaning out culvert pipes that are full of leaves. He said that other workers would be doing maintenance and repairs on the asphalt machine as well as working on county truck #117 that needs a hydraulic cylinder repair. Purcell stated that a concrete low water crossing on county road 5610 on Sinkin Creek near the Swiney Creek Bridge is on the Missouri Department of Conservation list of being replaced. Purcell said he is working with the MDC on the project, but that work on this project would not be done until a future date. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that materials would continue to be hauled to Dent County Roads 2530 and 2535 which are Conservation Roads. He also stated that workers would be out checking roads and cleaning out pipes as well as changing the tires on county truck #110. Larson wanted to clarify that he did not tell employees to install the incorrect road sign on Dent County Road 2230 with the sign for Dent County Road 3173. It was reported that employees of the road and bridge department had told that to James Fulton. Dent County Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that he attended the Region I Homeland Security Oversight Committee last week. He reported the state is going to change the way the grant funding is to be awarded. Instead of each region voting for the applications, a peer review committee will review the applications and determine the awards. Skiles also said representatives from the Sheriff’s Departments need to be on the HSOC committee. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley wants to remind voters if they have changed their physical address even if your post office box didn’t change, you need to update your voter registration card. If there are other errors on your voter registration card, please report them to her office. She is asking that if anyone had any issues with this last election to please come by her office at the courthouse and get them corrected before the August election. Commissioner Purcell called CenturyLink regarding the road and bridge department’s phone bill after it was discovered they were paying Doolittle city taxes. That problem was corrected and Centurylink also found the county was being double billed for the last 21 months and a credit of over $740.00 is due the county. The credit was submitted to a CenturyLink supervisor for approval. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.
Healthy Dent County will be unveiling a new Summer Activity Program to be held at the Salem Community Center @ the Armory. This new program is for all children age five through twelve. It will run from May 27th through August 8th, starting at 8:00 AM and going until 1:00 PM. The children can then go to the Salem City Pool or be picked up by a parent. The program will focus on kids working together, making healthy choices, learning new skills, expressing creativity, and most of all having fun. Lunch and a snack will be provided daily, and the cost of the program is $5.00 per day or only $25.00 per week. Lunch will be served at noon at the Salem Community Center. Registration deadline is May 19th. The Program is being funded in part by a grant from Missouri Foundation for Health that focuses on healthy out-of-school time for kids grades K-8. Healthy Dent County is also teaming up with the St. Louis organization “Operation Food Search” that will provide lunch for all children in the community. Any child ages 2-18 has access to a healthy meal Monday through Friday during this summer program. The Salem Tigers Baseball game with Mountain View-Liberty scheduled for Monday was postponed due to wet grounds and has been rescheduled for Tuesday at 4:30 Mountain View. Salem enters the game with a 5-9 record and they are 1-3 in the SCA. Due to prior commitments, the game will NOT be aired on KSMO Radio.
Final sign-ups for the City of Salem Summer Youth Baseball/Softball/T-Ball Program will be held Thursday, May 1st and Friday, May 2nd from 4:00 to 6:00 in the front lobby of the Salem Community Center @ the Armory. The cost is $20 per child and it is for ages 4-13. For more information contact Parks & Rec Director Greg Nash at 729-6290. Coaches are also needed.
Khris Davis' RBI triple in the 12th inning proved to be the difference as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the St. Louis Cardinals, 5-3, in the opener of a three-game series Monday. Matt Holliday went 3-for-6 with a home run and two RBI and Allen Craig had a solo homer in the setback. The Cardinals and Brewers play again tonight and you can hear it on KSMO at 6:40.
The St. Louis Cardinals have optioned infielder Kolten Wong and outfielder Shane Robinson to their Triple-A affiliate in Memphis. The team also recalled infielder Greg Garcia and outfielder Randal Grichuk from Memphis to fill the spots.
The Kansas City Royals had the day off yesterday but will host the Toronto Blue Jays tonight in the first of a three-game series at 7:10. The Royals are 12-12 on the year and have won two out of their last three games.
Kim Anderson, who guided Central Missouri to a Division II national championship a month ago, has accepted an offer to become the head men's basketball coach at the University of Missouri. Anderson, a Missouri alum and former Tigers player, returns to his alma mater after amassing a 274-94 record over 12 seasons at Central Missouri with seven tournament appearances.

Funeral services for Concetta Pardee of St. James, age 99, will be held Friday morning at 10:00 at the St. Anthony Catholic Church in Rosati. Visitation will be held Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00 at the James and Gahr Chapel in St. James. Interment will be in the St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery in Rosati. A prayer service will be held Thursday at 5:00 with Father Charles Pardee at the James and Gahr Chapel.
Funeral services for Beatrice Marie Amptmann of Cuba, 86, will be held Saturday at 10:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery.
