The Salem Police Department released their reports involving a warrant arrest, disturbance, a DWI checkpoint and a theft. On Friday, April 23rd the Salem Police Department, with the assistance of the Dent County Sheriff Department and the Missouri State Highway Patrol, conducted a DWI Checkpoint within the city limits of Salem. A total of 122 vehicles were checked during the checkpoint, which resulted in one DWI arrest, one citation for a child restraint violation, one citation for failure to maintain insurance, three warnings were issued for a headlight violation, and two warnings for seatbelt violations were issued. That afternoon at 3:00 p.m. a 25-year-old man from Collinsville, Illinois turned himself in at station in reference to warrants for his arrest. He was arrested on two Salem Police warrants, one Phelps County Sheriff’s warrant and one Rolla Police warrant. He posted bond on all warrants and was released to appear in court. Later that afternoon at 3:30 p.m. an 18-year-old Salem man was creating a disturbance with other subjects in front of the station. He was placed under arrest for disorderly conduct, issued a summons to appear in court, and released. On Saturday, April 24th at 9:00 a.m. an officer was detailed to the 1300 block of South Wines in reference to a theft. Investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown had stolen a 1995 home made trailer valued at $400. Also stolen on the trailer was a 17.5 horsepower Troy-Bilt lawn tractor valued at $1200 and a 5.5 horsepower self-propelled Troy-Bilt lawn mower valued at $178. Anyone with information on the theft report is asked to contact the Salem Police Department at 729-4242.

Bring your friends and family to Big Spring on May 1st to observe a replica Civil War Union Army encampment and traditional woodworking instructional event. Demonstrations will represent skills from the time period of that great conflict with emphasis on the tools and methods used in encampments, for repair of equipment, and in preparation for battle. Volunteers from the Ozark National Scenic Riverways Heritage Workshop and park staff will teach traditional woodworking skills to a Civil War reenactment group from southeastern Missouri. Participants will learn the use of chopping axes, broadaxes, adzes, and crosscut saws. They will also learn about wood splitting in the making of rails, pickets, and shingles. There will be demonstrations of wood shaping with hand axes, broadaxes, chisels, drawknives, and spoke shaves. The “Friend or Froe” event will be conducted from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 1st, at the Depression Farm site near Big Spring.  The public is invited to observe the woodworking demonstrations and tour the replica Civil War encampment. Ozark National Scenic Riverways preserves the free-flowing Current and Jacks Fork Rivers, the surrounding natural resources, and the unique cultural heritage of the Ozark people. 

The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has appointed Judy Apperson as Interim Director beginning Monday, April 26th. The appointment follows the recent resignation of former Director Patty Shults. Judy is a native of Dent County and has lived in the Salem area most of her life. Judy retired from University of Missouri Outreach & Extension as Administrative Associate for the South Central Regional Director. Judy’s current volunteer service includes serving as secretary for the Salem Area Community Betterment Association and she enjoys spending time with her husband, family and friends. Judy will serve as Interim Director during the Chamber’s search for a permanent replacement.

The Ava Bears scored in every inning, as they handed the Salem Tigers a 14-8 loss. The Tigers scored their eight runs on a total of eight hits. Salem falls to 5-10 on the year and 2-5 in the SCA. The Tigers play in the first round of the Stoutland Tournament on Friday.

Jaime Garcia pitched seven shutout innings, and the St. Louis Cardinals extended Atlanta’s losing streak with a 6-0 win over the Braves at Busch Stadium. Garcia (2-1) allowed only four hits and a walk while fanning five for the Cardinals, who have won four straight games, including the first three of this four-game set. Garcia now has an ERA of 1.04 for the year. David Freese went 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Albert Pujols and Colby Rasmus each had a pair of hits, and RBI, and a run scored for the win. The Cards go for the four game sweep of the Atlanta Braves this afternoon starting with the Dug-Out Show at 12:20 on KSMO Radio.

Rob Johnson’s sacrifice fly in the eighth inning provided the go-ahead run, and the Seattle Mariners held on for a 6-5 win over the Kansas City Royals in the rubber match of a three-game series. Brad Thompson (0-1) took the Loss for Kansas City for giving up the go-ahead run, while starter Gil Meche didn’t factor into the decision after allowing five runs on eight hits in six innings. Jason Kendall and Mitch Maier each had two hits and two RBI for the Royals, who went 2-4 on their six-game homestand. KC starts a series with the Tampa Bay Rays tonight.

The St. Louis Rams obtained safety Kevin Payne from the Chicago Bears yesterday, in exchange for an undisclosed 2011 draft pick. Payne spent the last three seasons with Chicago after being selected in the fifth round of the 2007 NFL Draft.

Funeral services for Lela Marie Ball of Salem, age 65, will be held Friday morning at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Morrison Cemetery in Salem. Memorials suggested to the Relay for Life “Patriots or Putters”.

A Memorial Service for Hugh Wilson Ford of Rolla, age 72, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the First Christian Church in Rolla. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.

A Memorial Service for Louise A. Venn of Salem, age 76, will be held Saturday, May 1st at 2:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary of Salem. Internment will be private. Memorials are suggested to the Dent County Animal Shelter.

Graveside services for Thomas J. Clare, Jr. of Cameron, Missouri, formerly of Rolla, age 81, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the North Lawn Cemetery.
