An accident happened at 8:00 Friday morning in Dent County on Highway 19 about 11 miles south of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1999 Chevrolet Silverado driven northbound by 18-year old Terra Purcell of Salem, failed to negotiate a curve, slid off the right side of the road and struck a tree. Purcell suffered serious injuries and was flown to Mercy Hospital in St. Louis. She was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

Last Monday night at the Board of Aldermen meeting in the Open Session that followed the closed session, the Board voted 4-0 to offer a contract to Ray Walden to become the City Administrator on a year-to-year basis under the same contract conditions as those offered to former City Administrator Clayton Lucas. Following the vote, the meeting was adjourned.

The Salem Police Department has released more reports. On Friday, April 11^th at 10:11 at night, an officer was dispatched to Mobil at Highway 19 and 32 in reference to a sexual assault. The investigation revealed that an unidentified male patron slapped a female Mobil associate on the behind. On Sunday, April 13^th at 7:00 in the morning, an officer was dispatched to Phil-Mart in reference to a theft of fuel. That investigation revealed that the driver of a grey vehicle pumped $18.21 in fuel and left without paying. Later that evening at 9:46, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 1800 block of South Oak in reference to a domestic disturbance. The investigation led to the arrest of a 37-year old Salem male for disorderly conduct. He was issued a summons to appear in court and incarcerated on a 12-hour hold. On Tuesday, April 15^th at 11:10 in the morning, an officer conducted an investigation at the Salem Jr. High School in reference to an assault that took place on April 9^th. That investigation revealed that a 16-year old Salem male juvenile had sprayed cologne on a 14-year old Salem male juvenile’s pants and lit it with a lighter. The assault apparently caused no physical injury. The report will be forwarded to the Juvenile Office. On Thursday, April 17^th at 4:32 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to the Southeast Missouri Behavioral Health Center at 200 North Grand in reference to a combative and intoxicated subject. The investigation led to the arrest of a 38-year old Lebanon male for disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and a felony fugitive arrest warrant from Laclede County. He was issued summonses to appear in court and incarcerated pending extradition. Later that night at 11:07, an officer located a 19-year old Salem female in the 600 block of South Grand who had an active arrest warrant from the City of Salem. She was taken into custody on the warrant and released after paying fine and costs. On Friday, April 18^th at 3:30 in the early morning, an officer transported a 35-year old Salem male from the Salem Memorial District Hospital to the Ozark Medical Center in West Plains, in lieu of a mental commitment order. On Sunday, April 20^th at 8:42 in the evening, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. That investigation led to the arrest of a 49-year old female on two active arrest warrants from the City of Salem. She was incarcerated pending a court appearance. On Monday, April 21^st at 1:24 in the early morning, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of a 23-year old O'Fallon male for possession of marijuana. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Early that afternoon at 1:18, an officer located a 52-year old Joplin male near the 200 block of North Grand who had an active arrest warrant from Jasper County, Missouri. He was taken into custody on the warrant and incarcerated pending extradition. Anyone with any information regarding the sexual assault or theft reports, which are still under investigation, is asked to contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.

Route A in Dent and Shannon Counties will be reduced to one lane while Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs. This section of road is located between Highway 72 and Highway 19. Weather permitting work will take place today through Thursday, May 8^th from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm daily. The work zone will be marked with signs.  Motorists are urged to use extreme caution while traveling near the area. Jake Conway hit two home runs and Kyle Lea went the distance against Laquey in a 14-1 win in the Stoutland Tournament Saturday, then Conway shutout out the Stoutland Tigers, 6-0 as the Salem Tigers won the tournament. Salem is now 5-9 on the year and they are scheduled to be at Mountain View today to face the Eagles in SCA play at 4:30. If played, you can hear the game on KSMO and online at ksmoradio.com.

The Salem Tiger tennis team lost to Waynesville on Thursday, 1-8. The Tigers are now 3-3 on the year and will host Houston on Tuesday. The Salem Tiger track team will be in Willow Springs this afternoon at 3:00. The Salem golf team will be taking part of the SCA Tournament today.

Final sign-ups for the City of Salem Summer Youth Baseball/Softball/T-Ball Program will be held Thursday, May 1^st and Friday, May 2^nd from 4:00 to 6:00 in the front lobby of the Salem Community Center @ the Armory. The cost is $20 per child and it is for ages 4-13. For more information contact Parks & Recreation Department Director Greg Nash at 729-6290. Coaches are also needed.

Jonathan Toews scored on a breakaway at 7:36 of the extra session, and the Chicago Blackhawks beat the Blues 3-2 on Friday night at Scottrade Center to take a 3-2 lead in this best-of-seven set. On Sunday, the Blackhawks broke open a 1-1 tie after two periods by scoring four times and beating the Blues, 5-1. The loss eliminated the Blues from the playoffs as they go down for the second straight year in six games after winning the first two games followed by four straight losses.

Adam Wainwright stretched his shutout streak to 25 innings and Jhonny Peralta hit two homers, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to a 7-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday to complete a three-game series. Wainwright (5-1) had seven strikeouts in eight innings, giving up just three hits and two walks and becoming the first five-game winner in the majors this season. The Cardinals will start a three game series with the Milwaukee Brewers tonight at Busch Stadium and you can hear it on KSMO at 6:40.

Omar Infante tied a career high with six RBI to lead the Kansas City Royals to a win 9-3 over the Baltimore Orioles in the rubber match of a three-game set. James Shields pitched seven strong innings, allowing two runs on three hit, to earn the win. The Royals have the day off today.

Funeral services for Ronnie “Hot Rod” Lester of Centerville, age 55, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the McSpadden Funeral Home in Bunker. Visitation will be held from 9:00 in the morning until service time. Interment will be in the Corridon- Reynolds Cemetery in Reynolds County. Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital of the Coridion-Reynolds Cemetery.

Funeral services for Concetta Pardee of St. James, age 99, will be held Friday morning at 10:00 at the St. Anthony Catholic Church in Rosati. Visitation will be held Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00 at the James and Gahr Chapel in St. James. Interment will be in the St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery in Rosati. A prayer service will be held Thursday at 5:00 with Father Charles Pardee at the James and Gahr Chapel.
