Troop I of the Missouri State Highway Patrol recorded one-traffic fatality during the month of March, which is two less than March of last year. The total fatalities for 2011 are seven compared to six for the same time period last year. In March, there were 39 accidents recorded in Crawford County with 17 injuries, and one fatality. In Dent County, there were 18 reported accidents with 14 injuries, and Laclede County had 41 accidents recorded with 12 injuries. In Maries County, the highway patrol reports that 16 accidents occurred with seven injuries, and in Phelps County, there were 49 accidents recorded with six injuries. Pulaski County had 37 accidents occur in their borders with 13 injuries. In March, there were a total of 200 accidents with 69 injuries, and one fatality. That compares to 143 accidents, 54 injuries, and three fatalities from March of 2010.

Attention all 4-H/FFA Hog & Lamb project members! This Saturday is the Hog and Lamb Weigh-in at the Commons beginning at 8:00 am and hoping to be done by 11:00 or so. They are trying something a bit different this year. An additional culvert is being added this week in front of the southwest end of the barn so there will be two lines going into the barn with the scales in the middle.  Once your hog(s) and/or lamb(s) are weighed, you will load them back up and drive straight through the barn and go out the east side.  Hopefully this will speed up the process and get the weigh-in done much quicker as there are a lot of animals to weigh this year. All animals will be weighed, tagged and wormed.  Everyone gets to weigh one hog and/or lamb free. If you want to weigh a second hog or lamb, there will be a $5.00 charge for hogs and $3.00 charge for lambs. 

Celebrate the arrival of the first wild elk from Kentucky to the Ozarks on Saturday, April 30^th at the Twin Pines Conservation Education Center from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Gone for over a century, the first trailer of elk will be opened by Governor Jay Nixon into the holding pen at Peck Ranch. Although access to the pen is restricted, you will be able to watch the event via video. Director Bob Ziehmer and the Missouri Conservation Commission will then head to Twin Pines for a few remarks and kick off the festivities! Celebrate with Missouri Department of Conservation and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation with lots of activities for all including archery, elk print t-shirts, and other make-and-take crafts. Test your knowledge of how Native Americans used elk in Missouri and view special displays and exhibits. Twin Pines is located on Highway 60 in Winona just over a mile east of the intersection with Highway 19 in Shannon County. Shuttle parking will be held at the Paramount Industries parking lot on Highway 19 in Shannon County will be available as needed. For more information call 573-325-1381.

The Salem Chapter of the Common Sense Conservation will conduct a meeting on Tuesday, May 3^rd at the University of Missouri Extension meeting room in the Judicial Building beginning at 6:00 pm. The guest speaker Attorney Andrew Curley will be discussing the legal rights of the Missouri Department of Conservation and the rights of private property owners. The City of Salem Utility Committee will hold a meeting, called Mayor Gary Brown, tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers beginning at 6:00 pm for the purpose of discussing a possible contract with MMMPEP. The meeting of the Utility Committee is open to the public.

The Salem Tigers Baseball game with Mountain Grove scheduled for today has been POSTPONED and will not be played due to wet grounds. This game had been rescheduled for Wednesday, May 4th at 4:30 at Salem.

The Salem Tigers Tennis Team will host Licking today starting at 4:00 at the Salem City Park.

Matt Holliday had three hits -- including a home run -- and two RBI to lead the Cardinals over the Astros, 6-5, and even their three-game series. Kyle Lohse (4-1) pitched seven scoreless innings for the win. He scattered four hits and one walk while striking out two. Tyler Greene also hit a solo homer for St. Louis. Eduardo Sanchez picked up his first major league save, but gave up two runs in the 9th and left the tying run on base striking out Hunter Pence to end the game. The Cards and Astros play again tonight starting at 6:30 on KSMO Radio.

Orlando Cabrera drove in three runs as the Cleveland Indians took a 7-2 win over the Kansas City Royals. Jeff Francis (0-3) was tagged for six runs -- five earned -- on 10 hits in just three-plus innings for the Royals, who have dropped four straight. Jeff Francoeur extended his hitting streak to a career-high tying 16 games as he went 2-for-4 with a solo homer and Mike Aviles added a solo homer in the loss. Kansas City went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and stranded eight. Kyle Davies will throw for the Royals today and will be opposed by Fausto Carmona.

Salem Tigers Boys Basketball Camp will run from Tuesday May 31st – Friday June 3rd.  Camp Times are 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m for boys entering 9 –12 grades and 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. for boys entering 5- 8 grades. Cost of the camp is $30.  Camp forms will be sent home with kids, but if you do not receive one, you can stop by the JH and pick one up from Coach Zenker. Camp Forms are due back Friday May 13th so that T-Shirts can be ordered.

There will be a Girls Softball Clinic for girls going into the 5th - 8th grades next school year at the City Park fields or the high school gym if it rains. The Girls Softball Clinic will be held 3 Saturdays in a row on May 14^th, May 21^st and May 28^th. The cost is $20 and the clinics will be held from 9:00 am until noon. The clinic will consist of 3 Saturdays of specialized drills and fundamental work that will increase your skill level.  At the clinic you will work on correct hitting mechanics to improve bat speed, and throwing and fielding mechanics that will help you to be a tough defender.  Game strategy and situations to help you understand how to play the game will also be covered.  Each participate will receive a t-shirt. The seventh and eighth grade Honors Choir members will join the Upper Elementary Honors Choir to sing the National Anthem on July 28^th at Busch Stadium. The band will be playing “God Bless America” prior to the choirs singing the National Anthem.
