A shooting incident early Sunday morning in southern Dent County near Jadwin led to the death of two Salem men. According to the report released by Dent County Coroner Eddie Wilson, a 9-1-1 call was received by the Dent County Sheriff’s Department at 1:30 Sunday morning to report a double shooting on Dent County Road 6490 north of Jadwin and south of the Routes K and E junction. Upon arrival at the residence by a Dent County Sheriff’s Department Deputy, both subjects were still alive with one person in the kitchen area and the other person on the front porch of the residence. Randy Lee Schafer, age 48, and Roger Shelton Mahurin, age 44, were pronounced dead at 2:21 in the morning after the ambulance and helicopter had arrived at the scene. According to the report, an apparent domestic altercation occurred that escalated into a fight between Schafer and Mahurin. Randy Schafer was then shot in the kitchen area before Roger Mahurin turned the gun on himself and discharged the weapon. According to the coroner’s incident report, Randy Schafer died from numerous gunshot wounds to the neck, shoulder and torso. The report further states that Roger Mahurin died from the self-inflicted gunshot wound. Both bodies were taken to the Dent County Coroner’s Office for gunshot residue tests to be conducted. The report states that the incident will be ruled as a murder/suicide.

The pilot vehicle will help move traffic safely through areas where one lane is closed due to equipment and workers on and near the roadway. Work hours are tentatively scheduled from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The purpose of the project is to improve safety along Route 32. For additional information regarding this or other transportation-related topics, call the MoDOT Customer Service Center, toll-free, at 1-888-ASK MoDOT (275-6636).
