Children in the Ozarks region can continue to learn about their natural and cultural heritage through an innovative youth program, The Ozark Kids Connection (OK) at the Bonebrake Center of Nature and History in Salem. The Community Foundation of the Ozarks/Coover Charitable Foundation funds the program. Activities planned for this year include visits to area schools and youth gatherings, outdoor learning experiences in a variety of settings and regular monthly youth learning days at the Bonebrake Center. Activities for the kids include stream clean-ups, through the existing Stream Team, tree planting, invasive species control, landscaping, gardening and habitat improvement. Participants will be given the opportunity to fulfill requirements for the program award, a decorative patch designed by Salem native and renowned wildlife artist, David Plank. To inquire about the program, contact Jamin Bray OK program coordinator at the Bonebrake Center of Nature and History by calling 729-3400.

New Missouri 4-H requirements specify all 4-H members enrolled in food animal projects (including beef, sheep, swine, dairy cattle, meat and dairy goats, rabbits and poultry) must complete the Missouri Show me Quality Assurance Certification to be considered a 4-H member in good standing for that project. All Dent County 4-H/FFA food animal project members must attend a Quality Assurance meeting. Because of the high number of people that must attend and some conflicts with those who cannot make the first meeting, a second meeting will be held at a date to be announced. The first meeting is being held tomorrow night beginning at 7:00 at the Commons Youth Building in order to be a member in good standing and/or to show/sell at the county fair this fall. Attendance must be for the entire length of the meeting. Clover Kids are not required to attend, but are welcome. For more information, contact Linda Shelton at 729-3196.

This week is the first of two spring clean-up weeks in the City of Salem. You can place the items you want disposed of on the curb on your regular trash pickup date. This does NOT include motor oil or antifreeze, tires, paint that has not dried up, or car or lawn tractor batteries. You can also put out your old large items out for collection by the city like old appliances, old workout equipment, Bar-B Grills, etc.

If you are spring-cleaning and wondering what to do with that old motor oil, busted car battery or half-used containers of brake fluid, turpentine or muratic acid, there is an answer. Residents of Crawford, Dent, Gasconade, Maries, Phelps, Pulaski and Washington counties who have household hazardous waste materials, like car batteries, CFL light bulbs, used oil or antifreeze or other toxic, poisonous or flammable products, can now dispose of them free of charge, year round, at satellite Household Hazardous Waste facilities in Rolla. The Rolla facility is located at the Rolla Recycling Center, 2141 Old St. James Road in Rolla. While the service is free, an appointment is necessary to drop-off materials at either location. The Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management District, in partnership with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, provides funding to establish and operate the facilities. Solid waste department employees in Rolla have been trained in accepting the hazardous waste and the proper storage of it. The agency continues to cover the disposal costs. The Rolla Recycling Center is designed to serve residential customers only. Business and commercial waste is prohibited. Persons interested in using the facility can make an appointment by calling the Rolla Recycling Center normal business hours. The Rolla phone number is 573-364-6693. When you call, please be prepared to describe the types of materials and quantity of each that you wish to drop off so that staff can make arrangements to receive and properly store the materials at the facility. For more information, contact Tammy Snodgrass at the MRPC at 265-2993.
