The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. At the meeting, District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that crews are still preparing Dent County Road 651 for chip and seal and a crew is preparing Dent County Road 424A for chip and seal which is a cost share project between the county and residents of that road. Simpson also said that grading would be done in the Sinkin Township on Dent County Road 561. District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that material is being hauled to the Golf Course Road to prepare it for a one-mile extension of chip and seal.  Tune also said that grading would be done on Dent County Road 254 and a crew would be patching chip and seal on Dent County Road 615, weather permitting. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he met with a representative from Jo Ann Emerson’s office and emphasized the passing of the Secure Rural Schools Act. This ACT would benefit Oak Hill R-1, Salem R-80, Bunker R-3 and the Dent County Road and Bridge Department. Skiles also reported on the Community Emergency Response Team Training which is a 20-hour class spread out over three days that trains individuals with life saving techniques that they can use while waiting on professional emergency responders.  The training session is going to be held May 10th, 11th and 12th in Rolla at the Eugene E. Northern Building.  For more information contact Tammy Snodgrass at 573-265-2993.  The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

On April 25th at 2:00 pm, the Dent-Phelps R-III School, along with the Dent County Sheriff’s Department and the Salem Memorial District Hospital conducted an emergency drill at the school. In the scenario, an unknown intruder entered the building, ignored challenges by the school staff, and entered a 5th grade classroom. The school invoked their Intruder Emergency Plan and called 911. The Sheriff’s Department responded with the Sheriff, four on-duty Deputies, an off-duty Sergeant and an EMS also responded. After determining the situation and isolating the intruder, the deputies and staff evacuated the other students. The primary objective of the drill was to test the schools emergency procedures and plans, as well as the Sheriff Department’s use of the Incident Command System. The teachers and students were generally unaware of the drill before it took place. During the day a number of local radio stations, including KSMO, did announce the drill to help avoid anyone believing an actual emergency was taking place. While Dent-Phelps R-III did identify areas for improvement, the drill and evacuation went smoothly. The school was evacuated, one room at a time, in 10-15 minutes. This is just one of a number of drills that the Dent-Phelps R-III conducts with their students and staff during the school year.
