The Dent County Commissioners regular meeting was Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that patch grading was being done on Dent County Roads 6500, 6550, 6495 and 6305, grading was being done on Dent County Road 5510, and materials were being hauled to Dent County Roads 4253, 6420, 6500, 5130, 5110 and 5420. Purcell went on to say that debris was being cleaned from the bridge known as the Green Hagler Bridge on Dent County Road 6080. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that grading was being done on Dent County Roads 2590, 4380, 4370 and 3300, materials were being hauled to Dent County Roads 2590 and 3300, and debris would be cleaned from the bridges on Dent County Road 3220 when the backhoe is back in. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he attended the Region I Homeland Security Oversight Committee meeting where the 2013 grant applications were reviewed and scored. There were seven regional grant applications submitted and scored for HSOC Grants. Three grant applications were from Dent County with the Salem Memorial District Hospital submitting two and the Salem Police Department submitting one. Skiles went on to say that the Committee reviewed state priorities and set priority #1 as the MIAC Information System through the Missouri State Highway Patrol, priority #2 the Agriculture Emergency Response, and priority #3 the State Mutual Aid Coordinator. The Committee’s recommendations will be submitted to the state for establishement of the final priorities. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said that the last day to register to vote will be May 7th in her office or if the registration is postmarked by May 8th, that is also acceptable. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be held Monday at 9:00 at the courthouse and it is open to the public.
It’s time to plan those annual high school prom and graduation parties. Unfortunately, alcohol is often on the invite list as well. Youth make up a significant proportion of drunk drivers causing traffic crashes on Missouri roadways. From 2010-2012, there were 65 fatal crashes and 236 disabling injury crashes involving an impaired driver under 21. Missouri has a Zero Tolerance Law. Persons under 21 who are caught driving with even a trace of alcohol in their system are subject to jail time, loss of driver licenses, or being sentenced to use ignition interlocks. Zero tolerance means zero chances. Missouri Safe and Sober, sponsored in part by the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety, is a community-based non-profit organization dedicated to educating high school students on the dangers of alcohol and drugs, and preventing alcohol and drug related auto accidents. To date 152 Missouri high schools have participated and educated more than 76,000 students and their peers about the dangers of underage drinking and driving. The Missouri State Highway Patrol released a couple of arrest reports for Dent County. On Wednesday, April 24th at 11:50 in the morning, 29-year old Albert Terrill of Salem was arrested on a misdemeanor Texas County warrant for child neglect on two counts. He is being held in the Dent County Jail on no bond. On Thursday, April 25th at 3:10 in the afternoon, 50-year old Robert Bacon of Salem was arrested on a misdemeanor Dent County warrant for drug paraphernalia. He was taken to the Dent County jail and was later released.
Montauk State Hatchery will be holding the annual Kids Free Fishing Day Saturday, May 4th from 6:30 am to 8:15 pm. The entire portion of the spring branch will be reserved for kids 15 years and under. Many rainbow trout will be stocked to help ensure that all youths have a enjoyable time. Free hot dogs and soda for lunch. Nature related activities will take place throughout the day and prizes will be awarded. Kids can pick up their free tag starting Friday afternoon, or all day on Saturday. The registration tent will be by the fish cleaning station. Please provide your own fishing pole if possible. The salem Tigers Tennis Team will host Houston today weather permitting. The match is set to begin at 4:00 today.
The final signups for the City of Salem Baseball/ Softball/T-Ball Program will be today from 4:00 to 6:00 and Saturday from 9:00 am to noon in the front lobby of the Salem Community Center at the Armory. Ryan Reaves scored two goals and the St. Louis Blues took a 4-1 win over the Calgary Flames on Thursday. Andy McDonald and Alexander Steen each posted a goal while Brian Elliott stopped 18 shots for the Blues, who have won five of six. The win vaulted St. Louis from sixth to fourth place in the Western Conference standings. With 58 points, the team is one ahead of Los Angeles and San Jose, both of which were off on Thursday. All three teams have one game to play. The Blues will play their regular season finale on Saturday against Chicago at 6:30 and you can hear it on KSMO.
The St. Louis Cardinals had the day off yesterday but will start a three-game series with the Pittsburgh Pirates at Busch Stadium tonight. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio starting with the pre-game show at 6:40.
Alex Gordon's grand slam capped a five-run top of the 10th inning that propelled the Kansas City Royals to an 8-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park. Gordon finished with a pair of hits, while Billy Butler went 3-for-3 with an RBI single for the Royals. Lorenzo Cain ended 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored in the triumph, Kansas City's third in four games overall. Tim Collins (1-0) picked up the win after striking out two while tossing a perfect bottom of the ninth in relief of James Shields, who allowed three runs on five hits over the first eight frames. The Royals will start a four-game series with the Cleveland Indians tonight.
With their first No. 1 pick in franchise history, the Kansas City Chiefs selected Central Michigan offensive tackle Eric Fisher to begin the 2013 NFL Draft. The St. Louis Rams traded up with their first pick to take West Virginia wide receiver Tayvon Austin with the 8th pick. The Rams then traded down with their second first round pick to take Georgia linebacker Alec Ogletree with the 30th pick in the draft.
