The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors held their regular monthly meeting Thursday evening at the hospital library. Hospital Controller Stephanie Wofford presented the summary of operations for the month of March that showed 2,040 outpatients registered during the month with 799 people using the emergency room. For the month, the hospital showed an excess of expenses over revenues of $76,630. For the year, the hospital showed an excess of revenues over expenses of $249,316. Director of Nursing Carol Lacy gave her report and there were 70 acute care patients admitted, 24 surgery cases, 168 Home Health visits, a record 11,672 lab tests, 1,253 radiological procedures, 269 CT scans, 40 MRI scans, 28 nuclear med scans, 2,189 cardiopulmonary procedures, 478 rehab treatments, 218 dialysis treatments and 323 clinical visits. Lacy gave the patient call light report for the first quarter of 2011. On average there are 41 call lights per day with staff response time of just over three minutes. Staff is present in each patient’s room an average of just over four hours per day. Lacy explained that Missouri Baptist Hospital would soon begin seeing patients thru the hospital’s TeleHealth system. Administrator Dennis Pryor reported that the Veterans Administration recently announced that all clinics must have a sprinkler system. There is no sprinkler system in the Physicians office building that currently houses the VA clinics.  It would cost $70,000 to install a sprinkler system in the clinic. Pryor has spoken with Representative JoAnn Emerson asking for her help in obtaining a waiver to continue to offer service to veterans. Pryor reported on a national patient satisfaction survey recently conducted by Fazzi Associates for the Home Health Department. The department is exceeding the national and Missouri rankings in all categories. Pryor gave the Hospital Auxiliary report. The auxiliary’s next fundraiser will be the Hospital Week BBQ to be held May 13 in the hospital cafeteria, and on June 14 with Laurie’s Shoes. Pryor reported on the ER and Inpatient Satisfaction survey held for the first quarter of 2011. There were 240 ER responses and 38 inpatient responses received. All were very positive for the hospital. Pryor explained that the recent $5,000 donation by the Judson Young Foundation would be used for the new acute care patient waiting area and rehab room. He reminded the board of the Prescription Drug Take-Back Day that will be held at the Oak Grove Baptist Church and the Dent County Sheriff’s Department on April 30th. The board approved the budgeted purchase of an Inoto Device, exercise mat, hi-lo table, multi-gym stepper and six walkers for Rehab from Sammons Preston Roylan for $16,762. They also approved the non-budgeted purchase of a Cisco 24-port switch for Information Systems from IT Outlet for $305 and three monitors from Comp USA for $357. The board then approved the sale of two whirlpool tubs. Emergency Room Director, Angela Christensen was in attendance to turn in her resignation to take a position with Phelps County Regional Medical Center and thanked the board for all they do for the hospital and its employees. The board then went into closed session.

For about a year, the historic Alley Mill has not operated. The culprit was a worn idler pulley.  As Alley Spring water flows past the mill’s water turbine, the idler pulley keeps the belt leading from the water turbine shaft tight which in turns spins the main lineshaft that drives all the other mill machinery. Over time, the idler pulley became worn, had dropped down to rub against the yolk holding it, and caused the belt that turned the main lineshaft to slack. Jeff and Karen Wade, owners of Elm Street Garage in Mountain View, brought their family out to see Alley Mill last summer. They were disappointed to find the mill not functional. Being an engine machinist, Jeff made inquiries with the Park Rangers on duty about the workings of the historic mill and why it wasn’t operating.  After discovering what was wrong, Jeff volunteered to make any repairs to the idler pulley at his Mountain View shop at no cost to the American taxpayers. The idler pulley was re-installed in the mill in March. The public is invited to view the historic Alley Mill back in operation on Friday, May 6th at 11:00 a.m. during its grand opening event. During the event, Park Rangers will be conducting talks about the mill’s history and operation. For more information, phone (573) 323-4236 or visit the park’s website at www.nps.gov/ozar.
