Colonel James F. Keathley is proud to announce 13 employees were honored at the Patrol’s 17th annual awards banquet on April 21st, held at the Holiday Inn Select Executive Center in Columbia. The MASTERS members gathered to honor the heroes of 2006. At the banquet, a 2006 Lifesaving Citation was awarded to Salem resident Trooper Kyle D. Wilmont from Troop I in Rolla. On May 25, 2006, Trooper Kyle D. Wilmont was off duty while at the Dent County Sheriff’s Office in Salem. He heard a female voice yelling for help from the hallway of the sheriff’s office. The female led him down the hallway to where her 71-year-old mother sat in a chair. The older woman was having trouble breathing, her skin was pale, and her lips were turning blue. She then grabbed her chest and gasped before vomiting and losing consciousness. Trooper Wilmont moved the woman to the floor, asked a deputy to call for emergency assistance, and requested a CPR mask. He then used the mask to administer several rescue breaths. The woman began breathing on her own and regained consciousness. Emergency personnel arrived to transport her to Salem Memorial District Hospital. At the request of emergency medical personnel, Trooper Wilmont then drove the ambulance to the hospital, enabling both emergency medical technicians to attend to the woman en route. She was later flown to Missouri Baptist Hospital in St. Louis to receive further treatment. Trooper Wilmont’s decisive actions and knowledge of CPR saved this woman’s life. His actions are a credit to himself and to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

At the first meeting on March 12, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources gave a presentation about water quality issues in Spring Creek and the Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) being developed for the creek. They also discussed the need for the local community to identify the various non-point contributions to the problems and come up with a plan to deal with those issues.  You are invited to attend a second public meeting to do just that. The meeting will start with a brainstorming session about what could possibly be contributing to the low dissolved oxygen in Spring Creek.  Since nutrients (phosphorus and nitrogen in particular) and warm water can cause low dissolved oxygen, here are some starter topics for that discussion: Fertilizer and/or manure runoff from lawns, parks, fields and pastures; on-site septic systems that have failed or that are not maintained; and warm water temperatures from a bare buffer zone or hot storm water runoff. This meeting is open to the general public and all are invited to attend.

William Lynch Elementary Kindergarten screening will be held on May 2nd from 8:30 to 2:00 for children who turn 5 by July 31st of 2007. To make an appointment, call 729-6611.

The Department of Natural Resources will hold a second public meeting about Spring Creek on April 26, 2007 at 7 p.m. at the Salem TCRC in the Salem Freedom Activity Center at 1200 West Rolla Road in Salem. This meeting is open to everyone who lives, works and/or plays in the Spring Creek watershed.
