The National DEA Drug Take Back day is scheduled for Saturday, April 27th from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. The Salem Police Department and the Dent County Sheriff’s Department will be participating in the program again this spring. The DEA Drug Take Back day has been very successful in the past and they look forward to another successful time this spring. Be sure and gather all your unused prescription drugs, outdated prescription drugs or outdated over the counter drugs and turn them in on Saturday, April 27th. These drugs will then be disposed of properly.
The Jadwin Volunteer Fire Department will hold their annual community meeting at the Jadwin Fire Department on Saturday, April 27th at 4:00 pm. If you’re a member, you’re an owner—it’s your fire department; come have a meal provided by Tiny’s BBQ of Salem and bring some of your favorites to enjoy, too! If you’re not a member of the JVFD, please join your neighbors for this community event to come together and share ideas on how our community’s volunteer fire department might evolve and improve. After the meal, join in on the annual meeting.
The Salem Police Department has released some reports. On Monday, April 15th at 2:06 in the afternoon, an officer was contacted at the Salem Police Department in reference to a theft of fuel. Investigation of the report revealed that person or persons unknown took diesel fuel valued $487.50 from a vehicle parked on the truck parking lot on Babb Lane. On Wednesday, April 17th at 10:51 in the evening, an officer made contact with a 24-year old male of Salem in the 600 block of South Jackson who had an active arrest warrant from the City of Salem. The suspect was taken into custody on the warrant and released after entering a plea of guilty and paying fine and costs. Troop I, of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, recorded one traffic fatality investigated by Troop I officers, during the month of March 2013. That is the six less than March 2012. There were 155 accidents with 86 injuries and seven fatalities for March 2012; compared to 177 accidents with 49 injuries and one fatality for March 2013.In Crawford Country, there were 30 accidents reported with six injuries while in Dent County, there were eight accidents reported with three injuries. In Laclede County, they had 40 accidents with nine injuries reported, while in Maries County, they had 10 accidents reported with five injuries. Phelps County recorded 54 accidents with seven injuries, while in Pulaski County, there were 35 accidents reported with 19 injuries and one fatality.
In spite of less than ideal weather, hunters shot 21,437 turkeys during the first week of Missouri’s three-week spring hunting season. This year’s first-week harvest is 328 fewer than last year, a 1.5-percent decrease. That small difference is fairly insignificant, according to Resource Scientist Jason Isabelle with the Missouri Department of Conservation. He says the first-week harvest number is encouraging considering the weather that many hunters had to contend with. Isabelle, who oversees the Conservation Department’s turkey management program, stated that last year’s turkey harvest was the second to show an increase since 2004. Jakes, as one-year-old male turkeys are commonly known, made up 17 percent of this year’s first-week harvest compared to 26 percent last year. Missouri’s top three turkey harvest counties in the first week of the season were Franklin with 560 turkeys checked, Texas with 444, and Ste. Genevieve with 413. The Conservation Department recorded no firearms-related hunting incidents during the first week of the season.
Missouri’s latest aeronautical chart is now available, at no charge, to pilots and other aviation enthusiasts. The 2013-2014 Missouri Aeronautical Chart is produced by the Missouri Department of Transportation as a planning tool for pilots and users of Missouri’s aviation system. More than 450 aviation facilities are on the chart, including the state’s 125 public-use airports, 108 of which are publicly owned. Other aeronautical information, such as communication frequencies, navigation data and tower locations, also is included. Funding to produce the chart comes from aviation fuel taxes through the State Aviation Trust Fund. Aeronautical charts are available at most local airports in Missouri, by contacting MoDOT’s customer service center toll-free at 1-888-ASK MODOT (888-275-6636).

The Salem Baseball Tigers makeup game with Cabool scheduled for Wednesday was postponed due to wet grounds and was rescheduled for Wednesday, May 1st starting at 2:30. The start time was moved up due to Baccalaureate at Cabool that evening. The Tigers will next play at Thayer Monday afternoon at 4:30 in SCA play.
The Salem Tiger Tennis team won the Salem Invitational (Conference Tournament). Matt Sirois and Josh Plank each placed first in their singles bracket. Dylon Enloe/Emily Moser placed first in their doubles bracket and Jennifer Holmes/Josh Plank placed 2nd in their doubles bracket. Salem also received the number one seed in the District tournament.
The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament set for Saturday, April 27th, has been cancelled.
The final signups for the City of Salem Baseball/ Softball/T-Ball Program will be today and Friday from 4:00 to 6:00 and Saturday from 9:00 am to noon in the front lobby of the Salem Community Center at the Armory. Yadier Molina drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single in the first inning, and the visiting St. Louis Cardinals rode an early outburst to a 4-2 win over the Washington Nationals. Matt Holliday and Matt Carpenter each had three hits for the Cardinals, who swept a three-game road series against the Expos/Nationals for the first time since Sept. 26-28, 1969 at Montreal. The Cardinals have the day off today.
Jhonny Peralta and Victor Martinez each notched two hits and two RBI as the Detroit Tigers took care of the Kansas City Royals, 7-5, at Comerica Park. Wade Davis (2-1) was lit up in only 3 2/3 innings of work, yielding seven runs, three earned, and eight hits. He also issued a season-high four walks. Alex Gordon doubled and scored two runs for Kansas City, who will play the Tigers again this afternoon at 12:08.
The St. Louis Blues will host the Calgary Flames tonight at the Scottrade Center. The Blues hold the sixth playoff spot in the Western Conference with two games left, one point behind L.A. and San Jose for the fourth spot. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio at 6:30.

Funeral services for John W. Coffman, Jr. of Salem, age 75, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Grace Community Church. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 at the Grace Community Church. Interment will be in the Mt. Hermon Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family of John Coffman. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary of Salem.
Funeral services for Russell Eugene Perry of Rolla, age 78, will be held Monday morning at 11:00 at the Rolla Chapel of the James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 5:00 Sunday afternoon. Interment will be in the Ozark Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Kappa Alpha Order of Rolla.
