An accident happened at 7:45 Thursday morning in Iron County on Highway 49 about a half mile south of Viburnum that took the lives of two women, one from Salem and one from Boss. According to the highway patrol report, A 2001 Ford Ranger driven by 26-year old Jacqueline Stark of Boss was traveling southbound on Highway 49. Stark lost control and struck a 2008 Chevrolet Malibu driven northbound by 43-year old Sherry Patterson of Salem, head on. Iron County Coroner Tony Cole pronounced Jacqueline Stark and Sherry Patterson dead at the scene at 8:15 am. A passenger in the Chevrolet, 49-year old David Patterson, suffered moderate injuries and was taken by EMS to the Salem Memorial District Hospital and then air lifted to St. John’s Hospital in Springfield. Stark was the only one not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. Both the Ford and the Chevrolet were totaled and removed from the scene by Abney’s Wrecker.

The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. At the meeting, District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that crews are back to routine grading and weather permitting, would be begin on Dent County Roads; 5170, 5630, 6600 and 6660. Simpson also said that material would be hauled to Dent County Road 5610. District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 4050 and 4115 and on various roads in the Boss area. Tune also said that Dent County Road 2540 is now passable. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that a FEMA briefing would be held next Tuesday at 1:00 at the courthouse for the county to go over the estimated cost of all the damage caused by flooding. Skiles also attended a MRPC meeting on Wednesday in St. James, where it was reported that an Anhydrous Ammonia Pipeline Training Exercise would be held at the Dent County Firehouse on Monday, May 5th at 10:00. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that the total cost of the April 8th Municipal Election came to $13,050.80. The next meeting of the Commission will be Monday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

The Dent County Fall Festival Association will hold it’s Spring Festival pageants on Saturday, May 3rd at The Commons beginning at 6:00 pm. Contestants for the Dent County Baby Contest are: 2-year old Angel Pryor, daughter of Jodie and Stace Pryor; 19-month old Troy Pickett, son of Jannette and Eric Pickett; 3-year old Mia Pickett, daughter of Jannette and Eric Pickett; 9-month old Dalton Emory, son of Dewayne and Amy Emory; 11-month old Kaison Wilmont, son of Kyle and Aimee Wilmont; 1-year old Cheyenne Botkin, daughter of Kelly and Mario Botkin; 2-year old Jayce Daniel Perkins, son of Dannie and Brittany Perkins; 2 month old Brooklyn Perkins, daughter of Dannie and Brittany Perkins; 2-year old Anthony Fletcher, son of Greg Fletcher and Mindy Dilg; and 3-year old Bryce Hawkins, son of Tiffani Hawkins. Contestants for the Little Miss Dent County are: 5-year old Isabella Ripley, daughter of Greg Fletcher and Mindy Dilg and 4-year old Olivia Roderman, daughter of Jennifer and Justin Roderman. There were no contestants for Little Mr. Dent County. Contestants for the Dent County Princess are: 10-year old Alexis Crocker, daughter of Jason and Kriste Crocker and 11-year old Emily Owen, daughter of George and Melissa LaJoie and Kim and Baxton Owen. All the contestants’ collection cans for casting your votes are now available at the Bank of Salem and Town & Country Bank until May 2nd

Joel Pineiro allowed just one run in seven innings on the mound, as the St. Louis Cardinals upended the Pittsburgh Pirates, 6-2 to earn a split in the clubs' two-game series at PNC Park. Pineiro (1-2), who came into the game with an 8.10 ERA, struck out six while allowing four hits and just one walk for St. Louis, which had lost four of its last five. Jason Isringhausen recorded the final two outs of the game for his eighth save of the season. Brian Barton had two hits and two runs batted in, while Yadier Molina went 3- for-5 at the plate with two doubles and a run scored for the victors. The Cardinals will host the Houston Astros tonight at 6:55, tomorrow at 11:50 and Sunday at 12:55. You can hear all the games on KSMO Radio.

Grady Sizemore had four hits, including a solo homer, and also drove in two runs as the Cleveland Indians held off the Kansas City Royals, 9-6, in the front end of a twi-night doubleheader. Miguel Olivo had three hits, including a two-run homer for Kansas City. David DeJesus also homered and scored a pair of runs, as the Royals pounded out 14 hits, but had 10 left on base. The loss went to veteran right-hander Brett Tomko (1-3), who surrendered seven runs on 11 hits in just four innings. In the second game, Cliff Lee tossed his first career major league shutout as Cleveland edged Kansas City, 2-0, sweeping a doubleheader at Kauffman Stadium. Lee (4-0) was tremendous in the start, scattering just three hits, fanning nine batters and walking none. David Dellucci's solo homer broke a scoreless contest. The loss went to Brian Bannister (3-2), who was charged with two runs and four hits over 6 2/3 innings. He fanned four and didn't walk a batter, but his solid outing failed to halt what is now a seven-game skid for Kansas City. The Royals will host the Toronto Blue Jays over the weekend.

Funeral services for Doris Mathes of Black, age 77, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the United Baptist Tabernacle in Bunker. Funeral services for Maybelle Breeden of Licking, age 67, will be held Sunday at 1:00 at the Licking Church of Christ. Visitation will be Saturday from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Fox Funeral Home in Licking. Interment will be in the Licking Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Funeral services for Katherine C. Wynn of Rolla, age 97, will be held Monday at 11:00 at the St. Patrick Church in Rolla. Visitation will be Sunday from 5:00 to 7:00 with a Rosary Service at 6:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Interment will be in the Rolla City Cemetery. Funeral services for Jacqueline Stark of Boss, formerly of Pekin, Illinois, age 26, will be held Monday at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be Sunday from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Stark Children.

Funeral services for Minnie “Mae” Boyher of Jadwin, age 83, will be held Tuesday at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be Monday from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Green Forest Cemetery. 

Funeral services for Charles M. Stack of St. James, age 88, will be held Tuesday at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be Monday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Licklider Cemetery in Jakes Prairie. Memorials are suggested to the Licklider Cemetery.

Funeral services for Lottie Mae Williams of Palm Bay, Florida, formerly of Salem, age 88, will be held Wednesday at 10:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.

Funeral services for Sherry Patterson of Salem, age 43, are incomplete at this time but are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary of Salem.

Funeral services for Wanda Rae Maples of Rolla, age 79, will be held at a later date. All the arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
