The Dent County Fire Protection District responded to a structure fire Friday night at 9:33 reported by Pizza Hut at a house located in the 1000 block of South Oak owned by Shauna Frizzell of Salem and occupied by Amy Murr. Upon arrival, the firefighters found the backside of the house fully involved with a second structure in danger. Firefighters brought the fire under control just after 10:00 that night and were on the scene about 3 ½ hours. The fire was determined to have started on the northwest corner of the house and it is under investigation as the Fire Marshall was called in. The structure was a total loss and no injuries were reported.

The Dent County Fire Protection District responded to a brush fire Sunday afternoon at 2:04 about six miles out on Highway 32 east on the left at property owned by Glenn Roessler of Salem. Upon arrival firefighters found about a half acre on fire. The fire was determined to have started from a rekindled brush pile. The only damage was to the grass only. It took firefighters about an hour and half to bring the fire under control.

An accident happened Saturday morning in Reynolds County on Route KK about ten miles north of Bunker at 10:20. According to the highway patrol report, a 2004 Ford F-150 Pickup driven northbound by 21-year old Joshua Jordan of Bunker, traveled off the roadway and struck several trees. Joshua Jordan and 25-year old Casey Jordan both suffered minor injuries in the accident and were taken to the Advanced Health Care in Ellington by an ambulance. The Ford pickup was totaled in the accident and was towed from the scene. All involved in the accident were wearing seat restraints.

The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that the 4^th Annual event was a huge success! Nearly 700 people attended the event, and almost 60 businesses were represented. Many commented it was the best Expo ever. The five big prize winners were Janet Norris who won a Craftsman Tool Box Set from Sears; the Plank Family won a 2-in-1 washer and dryer set from Keller’s Rental Place & Payday Loan; Koradine Rhinehart won a new recliner from Gateway Rent To Own; Matthew McCullach won a wooden glider from Progressive Ozark Bank & Financial Group, and Tana Kettner won a $250 gift certificate from Bottorff’s Southtown Furniture & Bottorff’s Appliance Center. The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce would like to thank all who attended and participated!

The Phelps County Disaster Committee, in partnership with the State Emergency Management Agency, will host a training April 26th, 27th and 28th at the Meramec Regional Planning Commission in St. James and May 10th, 11th and 12th at the Eugene E. Northern building in Rolla. The 20-hour trainings are offered free of charge. The classes are from 6:00 to 10:00 pm on Thursday and 8:00 am to 5:00 pm on Friday and Saturday. The training will prepare volunteers to help in emergency situations. Volunteers will learn about disaster fire suppression, disaster medical operations light search and rescue, disaster psychology and team organization. Class size is limited to 30 people each, and at least 15 people must sign up for each class, in order for the class to be held. Phelps County residents will be given first priority to fill the class, however, residents of other counties are welcome to participate if seats are available. Ken Griffey Jr. hit career home run No. 564 to take sole possession of 10th place on the all-time list as the Cincinnati Reds blasted the St. Louis Cardinals, 10-3, in the opener of a three-game set at Busch Stadium. Alex Gonzalez hit two homers, a two-run shot and a three-run home run, and Scott Hatteberg went 3-for-5 with two runs scored for the Reds, who stopped a two-game slide. Chris Duncan and Scott Spiezio each drove in a run for the Cardinals, who have dropped six of their last eight games. Kip Wells (1-4) dropped his third straight start as he was banged for eight runs on nine hits with three walks in just 4 2/3 innings of work. The Cardinals and Reds will play again tonight at 7:00 on KSMO Radio.

Rookie pitcher Joakim Soria allowed the White Sox two runs in the ninth inning, one on a throwing error and another on a wild pitch, as Chicago earned a 9-7 victory over the Kansas City Royals, sweeping a two-game set at Kauffman Stadium. The game was delayed nearly two hours at the start by heavy rain and tornado warnings, but in the end it was Soria's mistakes that boosted that White Sox to their sixth win in seven games. Brian Bannister for Kansas City, who was recalled from Triple-A Omaha earlier in the day, did not factor in the decision. The right-hander surrendered four runs -- three earned -- on five hits in 4 1/3 innings, while walking two and striking out four. Mark Teahen had two hits, two RBI and scored twice for the Royals. Ross Gload added a two-run triple. Bannister's father, Floyd Bannister, pitched for the Royals from 1988-89. The two are the third father-son combination in club history, behind Hal & Brian McRae and John & Dusty Wathan. The Royals will travel to Minnesota to face the Twins tonight.

Funeral services for Emery E. Hawkins of Rolla, age 81, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Interment will be in the Ozark Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Rolla. Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association or Calvary Assembly of God.

Funeral services for Larry Jethel McMillen of Salem, age 57, will be held Thursday at 10:00 am at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to be made to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral services for George Ziebol of Steelville, age 71, will be held Thursday evening at 6:00 at the assembly of God Church in Steelville. Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 6:00 at the church. Interment will be in the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis on Friday. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the Eagle Flight Ministries.

Funeral services for Lionel Madore of Salem, age 88, will be held at a later date. All arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem.
