The Dent County Commissioners held their meeting Thursday morning at the courthouse. In the road report, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading would be done on Dent County Road 6080, and that rock would be added and then grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5080 and 6220. He also said that brush cutting would be done on Dent County Road 5390, and the rest of the crews would be out pulling ditches recovering material to be reused on the roads and also watching the flow of water in culverts. Purcell reported that after comparing prices, a 2008 single axle truck was found with only 11,000 miles on it and he recommended to the Commission to do a 4-year lease purchase agreement. All three Commissioners agreed and a $1,000 deposit will be sent toward the purchase on the truck with the purchase price being $49,500. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2160, 2560, 3020, 3030, 3040, 3050, 4430 and 5320. He also said that crews would be pulling ditches and recycling the material that washed into them. Larson also reported that he and a crewmember were in the Boss area checking out roads reported not to be in good shape by the postal service. Larson reported that there would be a road grading training class presented by Linn State in Willow Springs in May and that he and his entire crew would be attending the class along with Commissioner Purcell and those from his crew that are interested. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he and Commissioner Purcell went to Jefferson City to visit with Senator Frank Barnitz and Representative Jason Smith about the early voting bill as they are opposed to the excess expense it would be upon the county, and also the bill that would allow new car dealers to act as fee agents, taking the revenue away from the county license bureau. Skiles also reported that he would be attending a Region I Homeland Security Oversight Committee meeting. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that she attended the MAC Legislation meeting on Monday and Tuesday in Jefferson City. Curley reported that the early voting would have anywhere from a 25 to 35% negative impact on the county, and another added expense would be to have photo ID’s for voting. Also at that meeting, a bill was presented to the state to require entities that have open positions, even if the exact number of people file for the exact number of seats, they would still be required to hold an election. Curley also attended a County Employee Retirement Funding (CERF) meeting on Wednesday, where currently the match is 50 cents to a $1.00. George LaJoie from the Air Evac Life Team stopped by to request permission to do videotaped safety training in Salem the middle of May. The training would be held at the intersection of Dent County Road 6150 and 6160. The purpose of the video is to focus on safety at a landing zone not only at the scene of an accident but also the hospital. The video will be used as a standard training video at over 80 Air Evac bases in 14 states. In the credits of the video the City of Salem and Dent County will be identified. The Dent County Fire Protection District, the Dent County Sheriff’s Department, Salem Memorial District Hospital and EMS will all be participating in the training tape. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday at 9:00 am at the courthouse and that meeting is open to the public.

Come and see the High School District Art Show today from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday, the 25th, from 9 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. in the Salem High School Gym. There is no charge to attend.  There are exhibits from the top artists from 15 area high schools. Salem placed 1st overall as a school and had many top finishers in all categories, including 1st place individual winner, Cody Nickles.

An accident happened in Dent County at 9:45 Thursday evening on Highway 19 about two miles north of Gladden. According to the highway patrol report, 22-year old Gregory B. Cox of Salem was driving a 1995 Suzuki Motorcycle northbound when he lost control on a curve. He then traveled off the roadway and struck an embankment. Cox suffered moderate injuries and transported by a private vehicle to the Salem Memorial District Hospital where he was flown to the University Hospital in Columbia. The Suzuki sustained moderate damages and was left at the roadside.

Experience the "Birds of Prey Fly in Montauk" program on Saturday at Montauk State Park near Salem. This free program, sponsored by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, will begin at 2:00 p.m. on the open grassy area between the mill and the lodge. The World Bird Sanctuary from St. Louis will bring spectacular raptors of Missouri, such as falcons, hawks, owls and vultures, to the park. Get an up-close, personal look at some of the birds and learn fascinating facts about them. Be sure to bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit on during the program. Grant Gordon struck out 13 Panthers and gave up an infield hit as the Salem Tigers scored five runs in 2^nd and 5^th innings and beat Mountain Grove, 10-0. Gordon is now 6-0 as he also went 2-4 with two RBI. Ryan Smith also had 2 RBI in the game. Salem is 11-2 on the year and 5-0 in the SCA. They will be in Ava on Monday.

Albert Pujols went 3-for-4 with a pair of homers, three runs batted in and four runs scored, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to a 12-8 victory over the New York Mets. Rick Ankiel added three hits with a homer and two runs batted in, while Ryan Ludwick and Skip Schumaker each drove in two runs for the Cardinals, who have won seven in a row at home. Kyle Lohse (3-0) went the first five innings to pick up the win and added an RBI single.. The Cardinals welcome the Cubs to Busch for three games starting tonight at 6:55 on KSMO Radio.

Grady Sizemore belted a three-run homer to cap a four-run eighth inning, leading the Cleveland Indians to a 5-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals in the rubber match of a three-game series at Progressive Field. Gil Meche (1-1), despite a brilliant first seven innings, took the loss. He was charged with four runs on five hits with seven strikeouts and no walks. Alberto Callaspo and Billy Butler drove in runs for Kansas City, which has lost three of its last four. The Royals completed a six-game road trip with a 3-3 mark. They will face Detroit this weekend.

The Kansas City Chiefs have traded tight end Tony Gonzalez to the Atlanta Falcons in exchange for a second-round selection in the 2010 NFL draft.

Funeral services for Richard Paul Wilber of Salem, age 67, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Grace Community Church. Interment will be in the Mount Herman Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Memorials are suggested to the SBU Salem Scholarship. All arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.

Doris Janette Griffith of Salem, age 63, passed away on April 22^nd. In honor of Mrs. Griffith’s wishes, there will be no service. All the arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.
