The Dent County Commissioners regular meeting was Monday monring at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that between 3.5 to five inches of rain fell in many areas of his district causing road damage. He said workers made sure that all roads are passable but some are rough and they will be worked as quickly as possible. He did indicate that workers would be cleaning up wind damage and debris from the storms, and also remove a tree that was across Dent County Road 6460. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that several Boss and Howes Mill county roads sustained major damage from the storms. Larson said that the roads are passible but many roads in the Boss and Howes Mill areas will have materials added to them. Most workers will be working on those roads, but Larson did state that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 3225 and 4380 as well. Chris Shaver came in told the commission about a large dip on Dent County Road 6150 before a bridge that is almost impossible to see and wondered if the commission could put up warning signs as many vehicles have bottomed out on it. Commissioner Larson told Shaver that he would check it out and see what could be done. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that he would be attending a Region I Homeland Security Oversight Committee meeting today to review and score the 2013 grant applications. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said that the first day to absentee vote for the special June 4th election will be today. She also said that the last day to register to vote will be May 7th in her office or if the regsitration is postmarked by May 8th, that is also acceptable. At the last meeting, Sheriff Rick Stallings asked if the Reynolds County Ambulance Station could have a Dent County plat map and the commission agreed. Tod Kinerk also came in told the commission that the “Salute to the Timber Industry” Parade would be held Labor Day starting at 10:30 from the Commons, to Route J, down to McArthur and then downtown. He said the persons and industries involved in the logging business are welcome to participate. A free lunch will then be held at the Commons at noon sponsord by Vandivort Drug. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be held Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.
An accident occurred at 1:00 am Saturday morning in Texas County on Highway 137 south of the Licking city limits. According to the highway patrol report a 1998 Chevrolet S10 Blazer, driven by 18 year-old Taylor D. Walser of Houston struck a pedestrian, 16 year-old Allyssa M. Yarbor of Licking, when she stepped onto the roadway in to the path of the Chevrolet. According to the report Yarbor sustained serious injuries and was transported to Mercy Hospital in Springfield by Air Evac. The report also stated that Walser was wearing a safety restraint and that the Chevrolet sustained minor damage and was driven from the scene.
An accident happened at 10:00 Friday morning in Crawford County on Highway 19 near Roanoke Road near Cherryville. According to the highway patrol report, a 2000 Chevy Cavalier driven northbound by 43-year old Melinda Marchi of St. James, went off the right side of the roadway. When Marchi overcorrected, the Cavalier traveled off the left side of the roadway. Marchi suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the Phelps County Regional Center by the Steelville Ambulance. She was wearing a safety restraint at the time of the accident. The Cavalier sustained extensive damage and was towed by Miles and Sons Towing.
Missouri’s fifth annual Show-Me Green Sales Tax Holiday, which provides shoppers in Missouri the opportunity to save on energy-efficient appliances, began Friday, April 19th, and will run through Thursday, April 25th. People who purchase new ENERGY STAR®-qualified appliances in Missouri during the holiday will save a minimum of 4.225 percent off their purchase. The reduced price represents the elimination of the state’s sales tax from the purchase. ENERGY STAR®-labeled appliances that qualify for the sales tax exemption are: clothes washers, refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers, water heaters, furnaces, air conditioners and heat pumps. Local City of Salem and Dent County sales taxes will still need to be paid on all local purchases. More information about the ENERGY STAR® program can be obtained at www.energystar.gov.
The City of Salem Clean-Up continues now through Friday, April 26th and will be on your regular pick up day. This means you can place as much household trash as you need to curbside. The Clean-Up also gives you the opportunity to get rid of larger items as well Those larger items will be picked up by city work crews and should not be co-mingled with the household trash, but should also be placed curbside. The city will also be picking up branches, limbs and debris bags that are placed curbside. Every effort should be made to bundle your limbs and branches according to the city codes that state they should be no larger than four feet in length, and debris such as leaves, twigs and grass clippings should be placed in the biodegradable bags available at the City Administrative Offices. Brady Floyd threw a complete game giving up five hits and a run as the Salem Baseball Tigers defeated the Mountain View-Liberty Eagles, 4-1. Lane Stluka and Adam Ziske each went 2-2 with an RBI and a run scored as Salem improves to 9-4 on the year and 4-1 in the SCA. Salem is scheduled to play Cabool today in a makeup game from last week at 4:30 at the SHS Baseball Complex and if played, you can hear the game on KSMO radio, ksmoradio.com and on fidelitylocal6.com. The final signups for the City of Salem Baseball/ Softball/T-Ball Program will be this Thursday and Friday from 4:00 to 6:00 and Saturday from 9:00 am to noon in the front lobby of the Salem Community Center at the Armory. Yadier Molina's RBI single in the sixth inning was the difference maker as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Washington Nationals, 3-2, on Monday. Allen Craig had a two-run double for the Cardinals, who saw starter Shelby Miller (3-1) fan eight and allow two runs on four hits and two walks over 6 2/3 innings. The Cardinals and Nationals play again tonight at 6:05 and you can hear it on KSMO Radio.
The Kansas City Royals had the day off yesterday but will be in Detroit to start a three-game series with the Tigers tonight. First pitch is scheduled for 6:08.
The St. Louis Blues will host the Colorado Avalanche at 7:00 tonight at the Scottrade Center. St. Louis needs just one point to clinch a playoff spot as they sit in the sixth playoff spot in the western Conference with three games left. KSMO will bring you the third period following the Cardinals game.
