An accident happened Friday morning at 6:20 in Dent County on Highway 68 about 10 miles north of Salem that took the life of a Salem man. According to the highway patrol report, a 2009 Kia Optima driven northbound by 48-year old Kevin Atkinson of Salem, ran off the right side of the road and struck a tree. Atkinson was pronounced dead at the scene by Dent County Coroner Gina White. His body was taken to the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. The Kia sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem. Atkinson was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident.

An accident occurred Saturday evening at 5:00 in Dent County on Highway H about eight miles west of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1999 Ford Ranger driven by 19-year old Cody Amsden of Salem traveled off the left side of the roadway, overcorrected, traveled off the right side, and overturned before coming to rest. The accident occurred as Amsden failed to negotiate a curve. Amsden suffered serious injuries and was air lifted by Air Evac to Mercy Medical in St. Louis. He was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Ford was totaled and removed by Whitaker’s Towing.

An accident occurred on Friday at 2:10 in the afternoon in Dent County on County Road 2060 about 1 mile north of Lake Spring. According to the Highway Patrol report, a 1998 Ford Mustang driven by 34 year-old Melissa Walters of Salem ran off the right side of the roadway and struck a tree. Walters suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by the Salem Ambulance. The Ford Mustang sustained minor damages.

The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their monthly meeting Thursday evening. After a couple of additions, the agenda was then approved. Superintendent Cindy Rumpf welcomed the new Board members and reported that the MSBA Regional meeting would be held on April 26th in West Plains beginning at 6:30 pm. John McColloch then updated the Board on the white house roof. The company that got the bid backed out and the roof will be let out once again for the bidding process. The classrooms that had mold have all been taken care of with the finishing touches of baseboards and painting to be completed. He reported that this summer, the tuck-pointing that needs to be done, would be taken care of on the administrative building and the parking lots at the Junior High and Senior High Schools will be re-sealed. It was reported that Michael Waldon took 1st Place in the State at the WYSE (Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering) in math and physics. The Quiz Bowl team took 2nd in Districts and Salem R-80 has numerous students that will be participating in the State Music Festival in Columbia next week. The Board then approved meal prices and set tuition rates for the 2012/2013 school year. After much discussion, the Board approved the new support salary schedule and extended all salary schedules along with approving a budget for the upcoming 2012/2013 school year. Currently the Drug Testing Policy includes those participating in extra curricular and co curricular activities. Beginning with the 2012/2013 school year the drug testing policy will also include those requesting parking passes to park on school property, which was approved by the Board. The Board then approved the bid from 2 Guys Music from Lebanon for the purchase a new sound system for the football field of $11,158 and for the gym at $4,467. The Board approved a lease for the walking trail, made up of pressed white rock, at the Upper Elementary with the Council For A Healthy Dent County. The Board then accepted the resignation of John Johnson as Athletic Director and Nic Zenker as the Boys Basketball Coach and Social Studies Teacher. They also accepted the resignation as the retirement of Rhonda Nash as a ScienceTeacher. In closed session, the Board hired Support Staff, Joshua Mareth as an Agriculture Teacher, and Philip Karr as the Athletic Director. The meeting was then adjourned.

The Salem Tiger Baseball team lost to Kingston and Union in the Potosi Tournament by the scores of 4-0 and 10-0. The Tigers will be in Mountain Grove today at 4:30 for their final SCA game of the year. Salem is 10-5 on the year and 5-1 in the SCA. You can hear the game on KSMO and ksmoradio.com.

The Salem Tiger Track team will be in Willow Springs for a track meet at 3:00 this afternoon.

Jamie Langenbrunner and David Perron scored 45 seconds apart in the third period, boosting St. Louis to a 3-1 win over the San Jose Sharks in Game 5 of the Western Conference quarterfinals. Andy McDonald added an empty-net goal in the final minute. Brian Elliott turned aside 26 shots for the second-seeded Blues, who advance to the second round for the first time since the spring of 2002. The Blues will now face the eighth-seeded L.A. Kings.

Kyle Lohse tossed seven superb innings on Sunday and the St. Louis Cardinals topped the Pittsburgh Pirates, 5-1, in the finale of a three-game set at PNC Park. Lohse (3-0) gave up just one run on six hits without walking a batter while striking out five for the Cardinals, who took two of three games in the series. Lohse improved to 4-1 in his career in Pittsburgh and the Cardinals are 4-0 in his starts this season while outscoring opponents 14-4. David Freese had a two-run single, Rafael Furcal went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored and Matt Holliday also knocked in a run. The Cards start a three game series with the Chicago Cubs tonight at 6:30 and you can hear it on KSMO.

Brett Lawrie knocked in two runs during a four-run fifth inning and later stole home, as the Toronto Blue Jays held off the Kansas City Royals, 5-3. Alcides Escobar and Mike Moustakas each had an RBI for the Royals, who have lost nine straight at home - longest in franchise history - and 10 in a row overall. Danny Duffy (1-2) allowed four runs on five hits over 4 2/3 innings to take the loss. He fanned five and walked five. The Royals and Blue Jays play again tonight.

Funeral services for Joyce E. Counts of Salem, age 66, will be today at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Kessinger Clinic in Rolla.

Memorial services for Donald Eugene Hood of Salem, age 86, will be held today at 2:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem with Full Military Honors.

Funeral services for Kevin Scott Atkinson of Salem, age 48, will be Tuesday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the New Harmony Cemetery.

Funeral services for Junior Gene Jones of St. James, age 82, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the St. Anthony Catholic Church in Rosati. Visitation will be Tuesday night from 6:00 to 8:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James with the rosary service at 6:00.

Memorial services for Violet Holland formerly of Salem, age 66, will be held Saturday, April 28 at 1:00 at the Gladden Empire Cemetery. A dinner will follow the service at the Gladden Community Center. Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army or the American Cancer Society.
