The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. At the meeting, Deloris Gray Wood was in attendance to go over the final details for the 140^th birthday celebration for the Dent County Courthouse to be held Sunday at 2:00 on the courthouse lawn. The event is open to everyone, and birthday cake and bottled water will be served. In the road report, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that Dent County Road 6620 would have culverts installed, ditch work done, rock added and grading done. He also reported that culverts would be installed and rock added to Dent County Road 6460, while rock would be added and grading would be done to Dent County Road 4210. Rock is also being added to county road 4150. In District Two, Commissioner Gary Larson said that grading was being done on Dent County Roads 2160, 2165 and 2170; and rock would be hauled to Dent County Roads 2500, 2160 and 3080. He said that road crews are still working on Dent County Roads 3080, 3090 and 3100. Larson reported that he and District 2 Road Supervisor Charlie Malone attended a workshop in Willow Springs Wednesday sponsored by Coastal Oil on chip and seal installation and repair that was very informative. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that everything is in order for the commission to attend a demonstration of the Interoperable Solutions system in Kearney, Nebraska next Tuesday. He went on to say that he would be attending a meeting today with Intercounty Electric and Associated Electric Cooperatives in Rolla concerning the climate bill, meeting load growth, and other legislation concerns as well as looking at their current “green” projects and how they are preparing for the future. The next commissioner’s meeting will be held Monday at 9:00 at the Dent County Courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The Community Wide Yard Sale will take place on Saturday, May 1^st. If you would like to be in the directory, you will need to stop by the Salem News located at 500 North Washington and register by no later than 11:00 THIS MORNING. You can have your address added to the map for a small fee. If you would like a space on the City Hall parking lot, be sure and see Karen at the City Hall by Friday, April 30^th and the fee is $8. 

On April 10, 18-year-old Garfield Fenton of St. Louis was found walking in the middle of Highway 32 West and was found to have eight baggies of green leafy matter and he possessed 28 tablets that was later identified as being Tylenol with codeine. Under Miranda, Mr. Fenton admitted that he was going to sell some of the marijuana. Fenton then committed the crime of resisting arrest when at the time of the arrest, the arresting officer informed him that he was under arrest and he then began to run, but stopped when threatened with a taser. Fenton was then taken into custody. Fenton was charged with one felony count of distributing, delivering, manufacturing, producing or attempting to or posses with intent to distribute; deliver, manufacture, or produce a controlled substance. Then charged with one felony count of possession of a controlled substance except 35 grams or less of marijuana. Bond has been set at $25,000 cash only.

The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released a report involving animal abuse and burglary. On Saturday, April 17^th at 11:31 in the morning, a resident on Highway 72 contacted the station in reference to their dog being attacked. Upon arrival the owner of the dog stated that his dog had been attacked by the neighbor’s pit bull. The owner showed the deputy where the attack occurred on his property. The owner then showed the deputy inside the house in the living room. The owners Jack Russell was there and it showed that the dog had a large amount of lacerations to both front legs and the deputy advised the owner to seek medical treatment for the dog. As the deputy knocked on the front door he was then met by a large, brindle colored pit bull that had visible dried blood on it’s chest. The deputy advised the owner of the pit bull of the complaint and advised her that he was issuing her a citation for animal abuse for failure to maintain adequate control of the pit bull.

The celebration of the 140th Birthday of the Dent County Courthouse will be held Sunday from 2:00 until 4:00 on the lawn of the Dent County Courthouse. Sponsored by the Dent County Historical Society, the current elected Dent County officials will be in introduced along with previous commissioners, judges, attorneys, current and previous state officials, and city of Salem officials and former officials. There will be special proclamations before former state representative and historian Ken Fiebelman will be speak on the history of the courthouse. There will also be music from the group New Highway and there will be a chance to take photographs. Bob Rich will have his stagecoach at the courthouse.
