The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their regular meeting last Thursday evening. Superintendent Steve Bryant reported that at the MASA meeting an increase in transportation funding was encouraged. Attendance of students was discussed in length with the importance being that they are in school. Currently the Salem R-80 school district has a 92% attendance rate, which is calculated hourly, and it should be at 94% for the Annual Performance Report, which does effect education and funding. In the CEE update, Bryant said the lawsuit is over in which some 200 schools in Missouri sued the state. The ruling is expected to be in June and appeals are likely. The MSBA Regional meeting is scheduled for May 3
rd from 6:30 to 8:30 in Mountain Grove. The Belcher Scholarship was awarded to Bill Van Ronzelen. New business addressed included MAP scoring, which will be replaced by end of course testing in 2009, and Amy Cartwright gave the Board an insight to health screening at the schools. Health insurance rates were discussed for the 200 employees in the district. Salem R-80 is part of a seven-district consortium, and several options are being looked into to get the best coverage for the ever-increasing prices of insurance. There will be no increase in meal prices for the 2007-2008 school year. Bryant discussed the fact that the loan from DNR for lighting would save the district $15,000 a year which could be used to pay back the loan in six years. Bryan suggested using the loan to also help with the roof situation for the 27,000 square feet that needs immediate attention. Transportation requested by the Project Graduation Committee was approved. The Board considered a revision of Board policy GCPB, which in requires a staff member who resigns after June 1
st to pay $1,000, after July 1
st to pay $2,000 and after August 1
st to pay $3,000. The Board accepted the resignation of High School Social Studies teacher Will Armon and Hazel Halbrook will retire as of July 1
st. In closed session, the Board re-employed all non-certified support staff for the 2007-2008 school year, hired Mary Mills as a classroom teacher at the Lower Elementary, Cory Farrar as a Speech Pathologist for K-6, Heidi Ross for 9
th grade Math and Kim Pogue for 8
th grade English at the Jr. High, and transferred Debra McLaurin from the Lower Elementary Speech Implementer to Upper Elementary Special Ed. The board also re-employed the coaching staffs with these changes: Jeff Schuchardt as an Assistant Varsity Football Coach; Carey Davison as Girls Head Softball Coach; Krystal LaRue as the Assistant Varsity Volleyball Coach; Gayle Wrightsman was named the Senior High Cheerleader; and Chad Smith was named the 7
th & 8
th Grade Boy’s Basketball. The meeting was then adjourned.
The second Town Hall Meeting will be held this evening at 7:00 pm in the Bank of Salem Courtesy Room. Forty business leaders and property owners met and identified areas of major concern at the first meeting. Before a plan is considered, an in-depth discussion of priority issues and a selection of the specific geographic area or areas to target is needed. The agenda will also provide the opportunity to identify a niche, a unique quality, or special theme for the revitalization. At the meeting persons will be identified that want to be involved in addressing these major issues. Approximately 100 seventh and eighth grade students from Salem Junior High attended the annual District Music Festival Saturday, April 21, at the Lewis and Clark Middle School in Jefferson City. Receiving superior ratings of 1 were the Junior High Choir, the 8th Grade Choir, Junior High Band, Brittany Crocker, vocal solo; Sara Watts, vocal solo; Adam Wood, vocal solo; Clarinet trio (Sarah Medley, Anna Ashburn, Amber Blaylock); and Shawn Bolerjack, tuba solo. Catherine Dent, vocal music instructor, and David Samson, instrumental instructor, accompanied the group on their trip.
U.S. Representative Jo Ann Emerson has announced that her staff will visit with voters throughout the Eighth District at Congressional Connection stops. The Congressional Connection program gets staff out of the office where they can have these types of meetings on a drop-in basis. The Congressional Connection will be in Salem today from 1:30 to 2:30 at the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce.

The Salem Baseball Tigers will host the Houston Tigers in their final SCA contest of the year. Salem sets at 4-2 in the conference and 7-4 overall. Today’s game begins at 4:30 and you can hear the contest on KSMO Radio and online at www.ksmoradio.com.
The Salem Tiger Track Teams will be back in action as they will travel to Willow Springs today at 3:00.
Albert Pujols hit a majestic three-run homer in the 10th inning to lift the St. Louis Cardinals over the Chicago Cubs, 12-9, in the rubber match of a three-game series at Wrigley Field. Scott Rolen had a career-high five hits with a home run and three RBI for the Cardinals, who had dropped five of six coming into this game. Jim Edmonds and Chris Duncan also went deep in a winning effort. Jason Isringhausen (1-0) picked up the win despite yielding a pair of runs in his inning of work, while fellow closer Ryan Dempster (0-1) gave up the big hit to absorb the loss. St. Louis had 17 hits in the game as they will have the day off today.
Jorge De La Rosa tossed a career-high eight innings and Mike Sweeney went 3-for-4 with a run batted in, lifting the Kansas City Royals over the Minnesota Twins, 3-1, in the rubber match of a three-game series at Kauffman Stadium. De La Rosa (2-1) allowed just one run on five hits with a walk and four strikeouts. The 26-year-old improved to 1-3 in five lifetime appearances, including four starts, against the Twins. Ross Gload hit a two-run homer for Kansas City, which has won three of its last four games. Mark Teahen finished 2-for-4 and rookie Joakim Soria worked the ninth to record his second save. The Royals play the Chicago White Sox tonight.

Graveside services for Mabel S. Lanning of Rolla, age 92, will be held Tuesday morning at 9:00 at the Rolla City Cemetery in Rolla.
Funeral services for Wanda McKay of St. James will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 tonight. Interment will be in the Hickory Grove Cemetery in Maries County.
