With nearly 700 people attending the 2009 Business Expo, the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce has considered this another successful year for what has become an annual event. The weather may have been gloomy but it didn’t hurt the attendance at the 6th Annual Business Expo. The doors opened at 9:00 a.m. and closed at 1:00 but during those four hours many came out to see what this year’s Expo had to offer.  Some attend every year and for some it was their first year in attendance. Some of the businesses have attended and participated from the very first Expo while others were new to the Expo. The Salem R-80 Upper Elementary Student Council raised $200.00 selling concessions at the Expo. There were many prize drawings held. Winners of those drawings were Roxanne Sanders of Salem who won the $250 Visa Gift Card from The Bank of Salem, Janeen Reinbott of Salem who won the $250 Visa Gift Card from Progressive Ozark Bank, Ursula Conway of Ellington who won the 32” LCD TV given by Missouri Loan Center, Mary Jessen of Salem who won the 5-piece dinette set from Gateway Rent to Own, and Robert Young of Salem who won the $250 donated by Town & Country Bank that the Chamber drew for.

The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the courthouse Monday morning. In the road report, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that work crews would be out checking roads for washouts and downed trees. He said that crews would be checking the bridge on Dent County Road 6080 and also they were going to check Dent County Road 4180. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson said that workers are going to be working on the low water crossing on Dent County Road 4060 as it had washed out. He said that there was a tree on Dent County Road 4050 that was being removed, and there was another washout on Dent County Road 3260 that will be looked at. Larson said that the crews would also be checking other areas for washouts and debris. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he and Commissioner Larson attended an interoperable communications meeting in St. James for emergency responders as requested by Senator Frank Barnitz. The meeting is being held to get feedback on the development of a system of communication for the sheriff’s departments, Missouri State Highway Patrol, ambulances and other responders that will allow them to communicate better in different areas. Skiles said that he and another commissioner may go to Jeff City to visit with Senator Barnitz and State Representative Jason Smith about the early voting bill and a bill allowing new car dealers to act as fee agents. At the last meeting, Daryl Hunter came in to inquire about Dent County Road 2460. The commission discussed the chip and seal bids but made no decision before signing the contracts for the two new 2007 dump trucks from Peach State Truck Centers in Georgia for $80,836 each. Charles Rouse also came in to inquire about Dent County Road 6350 and the possibility of it being chip and sealed. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public at the courthouse.
