The Salem Board of Aldermen’s regular meeting was held Monday night at the City Hall Council Chambers. The board approved an agreement between the city and the county for the collection of real estate and personal property taxes to continue to be collected by the Dent County Collector for the sum of $15,000. After the approval of bills the board approved Resolution No. 2-2009 declaring the results of the municipal election official. Alderman Bill Riley, who did not run for re-election, read a statement thanking the citizens of Salem for allowing him to serve the city for 17 years.  He commended City Clerk Mary Happel on her hard work and dedication to the city. He thanked Mayor Gary Brown for his honest leadership of the city. The Mayor presented Riley with a plaque for his service. New West Ward Alderman Brad Nash and East Ward Alderman Jim Jackson were given the oath of office by Happel. The board appointed Alderman McDaniels to serve as President to the Board of Aldermen. Brown nominated Bill Riley to serve as City Treasurer. The nomination was approved by the board and Riley took the oath of office. Brown appointed citizens to serve on the Utility and Capital Improvement Committees, Park & Recreation Board, Planning and Zoning Board and the Planning and Zoning Board of Adjustments. He will appoint members to the Finance Committee, Tree Board, Airport Board and Community Service Board at a later date. Economic Development Director Sharon Tubbs reported that over 500 people attended the business expo. She reminded the board that the city-wide yard sale would be on May 2^nd, and she distributed the new Salem Tourism Brochure to the board. Brown read a resignation letter from Brad Nash as the City of Salem Emergency Management Director. A replacement will be appointed at the next meeting. City Engineer Bill Huffman updated the board on the airport improvements. Brown reported that a surplus auction would be held on Saturday, April 25^th at 9 AM at 1201 S. Wine Street. MoDOT is currently surveying McArthur Street and will present a report to the board in the near future. Brown thanked Dan Salyer for helping the Salem Area Community Betterment Association’s Teachers Closet with delivery of items that will be made available to local teachers. The board then went into a brief closed session to discuss personnel.

The vocal and instrumental music departments of Salem Junior High competed in district music festival Saturday, April 18, at the Lewis and Clark Middle School, Jefferson City. The Salem Junior High choir, under the direction of Catherine Dent, received a 1 rating. The Salem Junior High Band, under the direction of Andy Weldon, received a 2 rating. Others receiving 1 ratings were Caitlin Lawrence on vocal solo and on clarinet solo, Hanna Bostic on clarinet solo, Ashley Crocker on trumpet solo, and Samantha Emerson on vocal solo. The Seventh Grade Girls' Vocal Sextet composed of Kelly Cunningham, Victoria Douglas, Rachel Land, Amberlye Marion, Brittany Rowan, and Kasey Wainwright also received a 1 rating.

An accident occurred at 2:30 Friday morning in Shannon County on Highway 19 about 12 miles north of Eminence. According to the highway patrol report, a 2002 GMC driven by 41-year old Julie Conner of Bunker was traveling southbound on highway 19. The GMC ran off the right side of the roadway where Conner overcorrected, skidded off the left side of the roadway. Conner then overcorrected again causing the GMC to overturn coming to rest on its side. Conner suffered moderate injuries and was transported by Air Evac to St. John’s Hospital in Springfield. She was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The GMC was totaled and removed from the scene by Tyler’s Towing of Eminence. 

An accident happened at 4:30 Saturday morning in Dent County on Highway 32 at Boss. According to the highway patrol report, a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by 19-year old Ryan Jordan of Boss, was traveling westbound on Highway 32 when he fell asleep causing the Jeep to travel off the left side of the roadway. The vehicle overturned several times before coming to rest. Jordan suffered moderate injuries and was transported to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by a private vehicle. It is unknown whether Jordan was wearing a seat restraint when the accident happened. The Jeep sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

You can still learn to grow, harvest and use a wide variety of herbs through the workshop series, “Thyme with Herbs” at the Ozark Natural & Cultural Resource Center located at 202 South Main. Workshop #2 will be held on Thursday, April 23^rd and it will teach techniques for cooking with herbs, along with demonstrations and samples presented by Jason Edwards the Salem Memorial District Hospital Dietitian. Workshop #3 will be held on Thursday, April 30^th and will introduce many surprising benefits of using herbs for health and beauty presented by Karen Robert of SunnySlope Farms and Crystal Moore of Three Willows Natural Harvest. Grant Gordon hit a three-run homer and drove in four runs as the Salem Tigers beat the Mountain View/Liberty Eagles by the score of 10-6. Salem scored four runs in the fifth inning without a hit to take the lead after tying the game in the 5^th inning. Aaron Loker had a two run single in the game. Gordon got the win as he took over for Loker with score tied in the 5^th inning and struck out seven Eagles. Salem is 10-2 on the year and 4-0 in the SCA and will play Mountain Grove on Thursday.

Salem finished 6th out of 10 teams at the Mt. Grove Invitational Tournament on Monday. Connor Stroburg led the Tigers with a 93 which allowed him to medal at 14th. Ben Adams shot a 97, while Robbie Brooks and Zach Pogue each shot a 108. Branden Piatt finished with a 111 which did not count towards the total. The golf Team will be at Houston today.

The St. Louis Cardinals had the day off yesterday and will host the New York Mets tonight at 6:55. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

The Kansas City Royals had the day off yesterday and they will be facing Cleveland tonight.

The St. Louis Blues are faced with a do or die situation as they trail the Vancouver Canucks, 3 games to 0. Game four is tonight at 7:00 at the Scottrade Center. The Blues MUST win to send the series back to Vancouver for a Game Five. Due to contractual obligations, KSMO will NOT be airing the game tonight.

Funeral services for David P. Bogle of Chamois, age 59, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the Morton Chapel in Chamois with Chaplin Bruce Gardner officiating. Visitation will be today from 4:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Lane Cemetery.

Funeral services for Richard Paul Wilber of Salem, age 67, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Grace Community Church. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the Mount Herman Cemetery with Full Military Honors.
