The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their regular meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers beginning at 7:00 pm, after a Closed Session meeting to discuss personnel that will begin at 6:00 pm. After the approval of the agenda, the board will review the proposals for an electric increase submitted by Alderman McDaniels, Alderman Riley and Alderman Jackson. After the bills are approved, the election results from April 8
th will be certified followed by the oath of office, organization of the board and the appointment of the city clerk, city collector and city treasurer. During the hearing of persons, Rhonda Smith with Pathways Behavioral Healthcare is requesting the use of the City Hall to hold Psycho-Social Rehabilitation on Thursdays in the basement from 12:00 (noon) until 4:00. During reports of City Officials, Boards and Committees, Alderman Jim McDaniels, Bill Riley, Jim Jackson and Kenneth Nash will discuss miscellaneous items involving the City of Salem along with specific items and Mayor Gary Brown will give his comments on issues as well. The Board will then go into closed session for the purpose of discussing personnel, real estate and litigation. The regular meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.
The Salem High School Quiz Bowl Team took the District title in an amazing sweep at the “Final Four” District Five Quiz Bowl Competition at Skyline High School. Salem played all morning rounds undefeated and went into afternoon rounds seeded first. The team then went on to victory in both the semifinals and final rounds. Three Salem students were named to the All-District Quiz Bowl team. Matt Prince tied for the First Place medal, Jenna Homeyer took the Second Place medal and Cricket Stroburg took the Sixth Place medal. The Salem Quiz Bowl team will travel to Rockbridge High School in Columbia for the State Finals on Saturday, May 3rd. Salem won the State First Place Quiz Bowl Trophy in 2001. The Salem Quiz Bowl Team playing for the District title includes; Captain, Jenna Homeyer, Matt Prince, Cricket Stroburg, Megan Greenshields, Brett Capps, Cody Nickles, Lane Howard, Kaycee Webber, and Ashley Greenshields. The Salem Quiz Bowl Team is coached by Susan Sheeley and Wanda Nickles.
U.S. Representative Jo Ann Emerson announced that her staff would visit with constituents throughout the 8th District at Congressional Connection Stops. The Congressional Connection Program gets staff out of the office and into the communities where they can have these types of meetings on a drop-in basis. The Congressional Connection Program will be in Salem at the City Hall this afternoon from 3:00 to 4:00.
National Park Week is April 19th to April 27th. As a part of the national celebrations, Ozark National Scenic Riverways will host a Junior Ranger Day Event at Big Spring for children 6 to 11 years old. The Junior Ranger program is designed to engage children and families in the natural and cultural stories that embody our national parks. The Junior Ranger motto is “Explore, Learn, Protect.” Join them for fun-filled activities from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., April 26th at Big Spring. Ozark National Scenic Riverways preserves the free-flowing Current and Jacks Fork Rivers, the surrounding natural resources, and the unique cultural heritage of the Ozark people. Senator Frank Barnitz, has asked residents in the 16th District to submit the names of Missourians from the private sector that have achieved, accomplished or overcome something remarkable in their lives. Some of these remarkable Missourians from throughout the state will be featured in the Missouri Senate’s 2009 Calendar. There are so many members of the community who put their time and effort towards a good cause without any recognition and this is a way to recognize these important members of our community. The Missouri Senate produces a themed calendar each year highlighting some aspect of Missouri’s history or culture. This year will be the first to include submitted entries from the public. Senator Barnitz will select two nominees from the 16th District, and these two individuals, families, or groups will be submitted to a panel of volunteer judges who will select 12 finalists for the calendar. A nomination form can be found online at www.senate.mo.gov by clicking on the “Know a Hero?” link. Submissions need to be received by Senator Barnitz’s office by April 30, 2008.

The Salem Baseball Tigers will be on the road this week as they play today at Houston starting at 4:30. Salem is 4-2 on the year and 2-2 in the SCA. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio and online at www.ksmoradio.com. Salem has lost two of the last three games.
The Salem Baseball Tigers will play a makeup game tomorrow at Cabool also stating at 4:30. The game was rained out back on March 31st. That game can also be heard on KSMO Radio and online at www.ksmoradio.com.
The Salem Tigers track teams will be in Willow Springs today at 3:00.
Bengie Molina had two doubles and three RBI and John Bowker hit a two-run homer as the San Francisco Giants scored six times in the third inning and defeated the St. Louis Cardinals, 8-2, in the finale of a three-game series at Busch Stadium. Troy Glaus had a pair of doubles, an RBI and run scored for the Cardinals, who have lost three of their last four. Rico Washington chipped in with an RBI double for St. Louis. Braden Looper (3-1) struggled through three plus innings of work. The veteran righty gave up seven runs on 10 hits, while striking out one. St. Louis opens a two-game set at Milwaukee starting tonight at 6:55 on KSMO Radio.
Bobby Crosby went 3-for-4 with a run batted in, as the Oakland Athletics roughed up Kansas City, 7-1, to sweep the three-game set at McAfee Coliseum. Rob Bowen went 2-for-4 with two RBI, and Jack Hannahan doubled and also drove in a pair for Oakland, which outscored Kansas City 26-8 in the series. Alberto Callaspo, Billy Butler, and Mark Teahen each had a hit for Kansas City, which has lost four in a row overall and five of six.Luke Hochevar (0-1), the top overall pick in the 2006 draft, made his season debut after being recalled from Triple-A Omaha. He gave up six runs on nine hits in 4 2/3 innings, with three walks and five strikeouts.

Funeral services for Marjorie E. Sutter of Rolla, age 79, will be held today at 2:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from noon until service time. Interment will be in the Anutt Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Anutt Cemetery.
