An accident happened at 6:45 Monday morning Dent County on Highway 32 about 31 miles east of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1999 Nissan Frontier driven by 25-year old Adam Kresler of Rolla, was traveling eastbound on Highway 32. The accident occurred as the Nissan ran off the right side of the road and struck a large tree. Kresler suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center by the Iron County ambulance. He was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Nissan was totaled and removed by Whitaker's Towing of Salem.

The Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Monday evening in the city hall council chambers. After approval of the consent agenda the board approved the paying of bills. The board then approved resolution No. 1-2010 that certified the municipal election results held on April 6, 2010. City Clerk Mary Happel then gave the oath of office to Gerald Randell as East Ward Alderman, Kenneth Nash as West Ward Alderman and Gary Brown as Mayor. Mayor Brown presented East Ward Alderman Jim McDaniels with a plaque for his 10 years of service to the City. Kenneth Nash was approved to serve as President of the Board of Alderman.  The board approved Bill Riley to continue to serve as City Treasurer. Mayor Brown nominated several citizens to serve on the Finance Committee and the Capital Improvement Committee and the Board approved all nominations. Brown received four bids from the local banks to provide financing to purchase a new backhoe for the city. This would be a three-year purchase agreement for $50,000. The board approved the lowest interest bid from the Bank of Salem at 3.74%.  Brown reported that two bids were received for the straightening of 100 veteran’s headstones in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. The board approved the lowest bid of $8,000 from Salem Monument.  City Engineer, Bill Huffman, reported on the Planning and Zoning Public Hearing and Commission meeting that was held prior to the City Council meeting. The commission recommended and the aldermen approved having an ordinance drawn up to change the zoning from residential to commercial at 1000 West International at the request of owner Wilson Mortuary. Brown asked the alderman to report any issues or problems to him during the week and to not wait until the meetings to discuss issues that residents might have. On Wednesday, April 28^th at 11:30 AM the city will test the emergency sirens.  Brown presented an invitation to attend the 140^th birthday celebration of the Dent County Courthouse on Sunday, April 25 from 2-4 pm. Tonight a public hearing will be held at 6:30 PM in the City Hall Council Chambers to discuss a Department of Economic Development Community Development Block Grant program to work on storm drainage ditches near the high school football field. The project will cost $205,000 and the city would have to match $20,000. Citizens in favor of applying for this $180,000 grant would be able to sign a letter asking that this grant be approved at this meeting. Brown has requested approval from MoDOT to extend the entrance to Brady Lane off of Highway HH, and to install sidewalks and a crosswalk on Rolla Road from the Park to the Hiking/Biking Trail. In the near future, the city will be requesting bids to replace a 3-phase line from Holiday Inn Express to Truman Street and bids to reline 15 manholes. The city will also be looking into drawing up an ordinance that would prohibit residential sump pumps or guttering to flow into the sewer lines. This practice has been causing problems at the water department. Brown presented a combined statement of revenue from transfers report thru March 31, 2010. Total revenue was $7,162,601 and total expenditures were $7,165,294. Brown commented that this includes a $12,000 per month rate increase from Sho-Me Power. Economic Development Director Sharon Tubbs distributed a new local restaurant guide and Sesquicentennial promotion card. Customer Service Training will be held at the Salem TCRC on Thursday, April 29^th and is free to employees of local businesses. She reported that the Enhanced Enterprise Zone Board would meet tonight. The Citywide yard sales will be held on May 1^st and spots are still open at the City Administration parking lot. Jerry Randell asked what the city could do to direct tourists to Montauk through Salem and not through Rolla and down Highway 63. Tubbs has worked with the Division of Tourism to request new signage pointing the way to Montauk. The board approved Bill No. 3196 authorizing the Mayor to execute an agreement between the City of Salem and MRPC to make application for a stormwater/drainage CDBG grant. The meeting was adjourned.
