The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning and District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson was not in attendance.  District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that grading would be done in the White River Trace area on Dent County Roads 250 and 251, and grading would be done and material would be hauled to the Golf Course Road. Tune also said that brush would be cut in the Sligo area. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that Dennis Purcell was appointed to the Meramec Regional Development Board. He joins fellow Dent County members Scott Schults and Mike Homeyer. Skiles also reported that Sheriff Bob Wofford would be meeting with the Commission Monday morning to give his monthly report. At the previous meeting, District Ranger for the US Forest Service Tom Haines stopped by to have Commissioner Skiles draw two names of kids between the ages 16-18 to participate in this summer’s Youth Conservation Core.  At 11:00, Commissioner Bobby Simpson came in to report that he had met with the Tourism Tax Committee and wanted to report for county government purposes that he motions for the county to allow between $2,500 and $3,000 to come out of the Capital Expense General Revenue Budget to help with the re-development of the Chamber of Commerce’s Community Website. Commissioner Tune seconded the motion and all three commissioners agreed. The Chamber of Commerce requested that two county employees or elected officials serve on the website committee; the Commission nominated Dent County Clerk Angie Curley and Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams. At Monday’s meeting, Sharon Tubbs and Ray Walden will meet with the Commission at 10:00 to discuss the SACBA Community Survey results. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors held their regular monthly meeting Thursday evening. Hospital Attorney Mark Weaver swore in Joe Brand to the board.  Controller Stephanie Wofford reported that the summary of operations for the month of March showed an excess of expenses over revenues of $178,980 for the month as money was moved into the bad debt and Medicare allowance account. Director of Nursing Carol Lacy gave statistics for the month and there were 96 patients admitted, 883 emergency room visits, 194 ambulance runs, 11 surgeries, 344 clinical visits, 274 home health visits, 8,236 lab tests, 1,126 radiological procedures, 22 MRI scans, 320 CT Scans, 103 dialysis procedures visits, 22 mammograms and 330 rehabilitation procedures were performed. Lacy gave the nursing call light report.  For the first quarter of 2007 there were 1,777 total calls with an average response time of 1.17 minutes. Hospital Administrator Dennis Pryor said that the Hospital Auxiliary would have a barbecue on May 11th for Hospital Week. The Auxiliary purchased a motorized canopy cover for Long Term Care. Pryor explained that USDA has not yet make a final decision regarding the Physicians Office Building loan, but it is expected any day. In the finance committee report, Wofford reviewed the 2008 budget projections.  The committee suggested a 4.5% rate increase in acute care charges from $350 per day to $370, and a 7% rate increase for ancillary and outpatient services. They recommended the long-term care charge of $95 per day stay the same. Salary and supplies would both increase by 4%. The 08 budget showed a projected excess of revenues over expenses of $660,675. The board approved a budgeted purchase of two dual channel and four single channel IV pumps from Part Source for $8,390; a dialysis machine for $13,500 for the dialysis department from Presenius USA; 14 patient room chairs from Grooms for $8,896 and a domain server with rack from ABS for $9,246.  The board then went into closed session.

Key two-out hits in the 4th, 5th and 6th innings helped propel the Ava Bears over the Salem Tigers, 6-4. Ava scored two runs in the 4th with two outs after a Salem error to break a 2-2 tie, but Salem tied the game in the 5th inning on RBI doubles by Brad Lewis and C.J. Smith. Ava then took the lead in the 5th inning on a two-out RBI single by Brady Quackenbush, and pushed across another run in the 6th inning with two outs when Jonathan Batcheller tripled down the right field line. Brandon Plank and Brad Lewis each had two hits for Salem. Matt Whitaker went four innings for the Tigers and gave up four runs on six hits, but only one run was earned. Ethan Curley went 1 1/3 innings and was charged with two runs on three hits and took the loss. Salem will face Houston on Monday to wrap up their SCA season. With the win, Ava clinched at least a tie for the SCA title.

Ryan Klesko went 3-for-4, drove in two runs and scored once as the San Francisco Giants completed a two-game sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals, 6-2. Noah Lowry (1-2) scattered four hits and two runs, striking out four and walking two in seven innings. Brad Hennessey recorded the last five outs to earn his first save of the season as the Giants won their fourth out of five. Kip Wells (1-3), a .180 career hitter entering the game, had a day to remember at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a single, a solo home run, and scored both St. Louis runs. Unfortunately for the Cardinals, his performance on the mound was less memorable, as he gave up five runs on six hits while fanning four and walking two in six innings. The defending world champions have dropped four straight and five of six to fall to 6-9 on the season. The Cardinals will be in Chicago as they will be playing the Cubs. You can hear that game at 1:00 right here on KSMO.

The Royals had the day off yesterday and will host the Minnesota Twins this weekend.

The St. Louis Blues signed the first overall draft pick in the 2006 NHL Draft, defenseman Erik Johnson. The 19-year old Johnson spent this past season with the Minnesota Golden Gophers, leading them to the WCHA Regular Season and WCHA Final Five Championships. He recorded 24 points (four goals, 20 assists) in 41 games played while being named to the WCHA All-Rookie Team. He led all WCHA rookie blue-liners in scoring while ranking third on Minnesota in scoring among defensemen.
