The Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Monday evening at the City Hall Council Chambers. At the meeting, Mayor Gary Brown reported that sales tax for February was up $13,755.45 over last year’s figures. After approval of the agenda, the Board approved Bill #3223 changing the height of address numbers from six inch to four inch for commercial property and three inch for residential property. After approval of bills presented by City Clerk Mary Happel, the Board approved Resolution No. 6-2011 declaring the results of the Municipal Election held April 5^th. Happel administered the Oath of Office to newly elected Haydn Powell Jr. as East Ward Alderman and Phillip Giacomelli as West Ward Alderman for the City of Salem.  The Board then approved Jerry Randell as President of the Board. Mayor Brown nominated and the board approved Mary Happel to serve as City Clerk, Sharon Tubbs as Economic Development Director and Keith Steelman as Chief of Police. Brown then nominated Nanci Wisdom to serve as City Attorney but received no motion. Alderman Kenneth Nash then nominated William Camm Seay to serve as City Attorney and the Board approved this nomination. Wisdom orally tendered her resignation effective immediately and Seay took the oath of office. Brown nominated Jack Emory to serve as Director of Public Works and received no motion from the Board. Alderman Haydn Powell nominated Bill Huffman to serve as Director of Public Works and City Engineer at his current salary. This was approved. All were sworn in except Steelman and Huffman who were not in attendance and will be sworn in tomorrow morning. Brown then made appointments to the Finance Committee, Capital Improvements Committee, Planning and Zoning Committee and the Utility Committee and all were approved. Brown reported on the public hearing and the public meeting, both held prior to the Alderman meeting, regarding the annexation of 1397 West Scenic Rivers Blvd, owned by Mississippi Valley Forest Products, Inc., an Iowa Corporation; 1500 Beezley Street owned by Joshua A. Rowe; and 1402 West Franklin Avenue owned by Perry E. & Verna L Inman. The Planning and Zoning Committee recommended that all three properties be annexed and the Board gave approval to have an ordinance be drawn up for the next meeting. Brown reminded the aldermen of a ribbon cutting ceremony to be held at Crowley’s Home Works on Friday and MERS Goodwill on April 20^th as well as the Fundamentals of Economic Development workshop to be held on May 5^th.  He also invited the aldermen to hear the final presentations of the MS&T students on April 21^st.  In March there were 967 participants at the Salem TCRC and 2,219 at the Salem Fitness Center. Brown also reminded the citizens of Spring Clean Up being held this week and next week. Powell made a motion and the board approved having the City Attorney draw up an ordinance banning the sale of bath salts within the city limits. Randell reported receiving numerous compliments on the City’s booth at the recent Business Expo regarding the clean up efforts of the city. Aldermen Kenneth Nash asked about the audit from Verkamp and Malone, and Brown stated it should be presented at the next meeting. Resolution #4-2011 authorizing the Mayor to execute an agreement between the City of Salem and H. W. Lochner, Inc., for the providing of engineering services for the Salem Memorial Airport runway lighting project was approved. The City had signed an agreement with BWR for the airport project, and H.W. Lochner bought out BWR. Resolution #5-2011 a resolution authorizing the Mayor to execute an agreement between the City of Salem and the Salem Area Community Betterment Association for services provided to the City by the Salem Area Community Betterment Association was postponed until after the budget meetings. After the bills are approved, the meeting was adjourned.

As previously reported in Your World Today, Marianne Skiles was honored for 30-years of service at the Customer Appreciation Day held by MFA Agri-Services and MFA Green Spot in Salem this past Saturday. As reported, Marianne started as the Assistant Manager, and was then promoted to Manager back in 1995 and remains in that position to date. We do apologize for the error.

An accident occurred on Saturday, April 16^th at 2:15 in the afternoon in the Dollar General parking lot. According to the Salem Police report, a 1994 Chevrolet GC1 driven by Caitlin Lawrence of Salem was making a right turn into a parking space located at the south end of the building. Lawrence was distracted by a conversation with the passenger and she accelerated instead of braking, jumped over the fixed curb, and collided with the building. The Chevrolet sustained minor damage, but the building sustained major damage. No injuries were reported.

The Salem Baseball Tigers erupted for seven runs in the top of the 7^th inning and scored 13 runs in the last three innings of the game to beat Thayer, 14-6. Austin Bettigrew went 5-5 with an RBI in the game, Andrew Conaway went 3-5 with 3 RBI, Aaron Shaw went 3-4 with 3 RBI and Devon Sutterfield went 3-5 with an RBI. The Tigers are 8-3 overall and 5-0 in the SCA and will host Mountain View Thursday.

Salem finished 3rd out of 12 teams Monday in the Mt. Grove Invitational. Ben Adams led the way with an 84 making him the 7th overall medallist and Connor Stroburg shot an 85 making him 9th overall and a medallist. Dylan Sisco shot a career best 89 and Alan Benowitz shot a 99. The golf team will be in Houston this afternoon for 9-hole meet.

Shelley Duncan's RBI, pinch-hit double paved the way for a four-run 10th inning to lead Cleveland over Kansas City, 7-3, in the opener of a four-game set. Kansas City relief pitcher Tim Collins (1-1) allowed four runs on four hits and two walks in the 10th inning to give the Royals their second loss in a row. Kyle Davies worked six innings and allowed two runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts and zero walks for the Royals. The two teams play again tonight.

The Cardinals had the day off yesterday and they will host the Washington Nationals tonight to start a three game set. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio starting at 6:40.
