The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors met for the regular meeting Tuesday evening at the hospital library. In the summary of operations, Controller Becky Cunningham indicated that inpatient admissions were down for the month at 62 and inpatient census days stood at 224. She reported that hospital impatient revenue was $348,413 which was $267,000 less than budget. The loss from operations for the month was $140,020, and after the tax revenue, the excess of expenses over revenues stood at $108,803. For the year, the hospital is showing a gain from operations of $48,276. There was a decrease in cash for the month of $257,158 with an ending cash balance of 3.8 million dollars. Days in accounts receivable for March stood at 51 and that is one more day than in February. Director of Nursing Carol Lacy reported that during the month, there were 735 emergency room visits with the average turnaround time of 113 minutes. Also during the month, there were 145 ambulance runs with 141 patients being assessed, 25 surgery cases, 1,818 outpatient registrations,168 home health visits, 9,560 lab tests, 922 radiological procedures, 157 CT scans, 16 MRI scans, 8 nuclear med scans, 529 rehab treatments, 185 dialysis treatments and 338 clinical visits of which 152 were for podiatry. In the in-patient call light report for the 1st quarter of the year, Lacy stated that the response time was 1:20 with 54 call lights per day. Staff was present for five minutes and 40 seconds per event, and was present four hours and 43 minutes per patient per day. Lacy gave the ambulance average response report that showed that the Salem Hospital had an average en route time of 2:01 minutes, an average time of 7:27 minutes to get to the scene, spent 20:24 minutes at the scene and took the ambulance 7:32 minutes to get to the destination. Hospital Administrator Dennis Pryor stated that the hospital auxiliary would have a big $6 jewelry sale at the Dent County Firehouse this Thursday and Friday. Pryor reported on the quarterly satisfaction surveys for the first quarter for the emergency room and admitted patients. All the reports came back very favorably, but Pryor said it can always be better. There were 157 responses for the emergency room and 23 responses for inpatient services. The patient satisfaction survey results were also very impressive for the SMDH Rural Health Clinics, with over 98% satisfaction in all categories. Board member Joe Brand reported he has list of good candidates that have agreed to hear a presentation on the hospital foundation to be held May 14th. Pryor said that there were 39 Tele-health patient visits, and that Missouri Baptist Hospital is working on a grant for more Tele-health form the hospital that could bring that service to the Emergency Room. Carol Lacy reported that she has tentatively scheduled a meeting for April 25th on the Community Health Needs Assessment Surveys to analyze the data and prioritize the information. The board approved the purchase of a Stryker Stretcher for the Emergency Department for $6,934, and they approved the sale of the ABX Pentra 80 Hematology Analyzer. Pryor thought the hospital could get $1,500 to $2,000 from the sale. The board then went into closed session.
An accident occurred at 3:45 Wednesday afternoon in Crawford County on private property outside of Bourbon on Highway N. According to the highway patrol report, 62-year old John Wiedner of Bourbon was driving a Ford tractor when his pant leg got caught on a tire. He was then pulled off the tractor and was run over. Wiedner suffered serious injuries and was flown to Barnes Hospital in St. Louis.
ATTENTION ALL 4-H/FFA Livestock Members: The Hog and Lamb Weigh-in is this Saturday, April 20 at the Salem Livestock Barn. Weigh-in begins at 10:00 am and ends at 12:30 pm. Set up will be different from last year, so please be patient and work with us in getting everyone through in a timely manner. As always, all animals will be tagged and wormed, with the first animal free, and additional hogs, $5 and additional lambs, $3.
The Salem Police Department has released more of their reports. On Sunday, April 7th at 3:07 in the morning, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. That investigation led to the arrest of a 24-year old Rolla male for driving while intoxicated. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Monday, April 8th at 8:13 in the morning, an officer was called to Salem Headstart for a report of fuel stolen from a bus. The investigation revealed that someone stole fuel valued at $108.92 from a bus parked near the school. Later that morning at 11:00, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that someone took a portable natural gas heater, valued at $150, from a residence in the 100 block of East Third. Anyone with information regarding the thefts, which are still under investigation, is asked to contact the Salem Police Department at 729-4242.
The Dent County Fire Station will be hosting an open house on Saturday, April 20th from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. During the open house, all are welcome to bring their kids and cameras and get photographed on the trucks. Enjoy a tour of the building and see the change from the dealership to the Fire Department and Emergency Management Facility. The Salem Baseball Tigers beat Mountain Grove, 7-4, in the makeup game at the Houston Tournament. The Houston Tournament was won by the Cuba Wildcats as they beat Houston. The Tigers move to 8-4 on the year and are scheduled to be in Thayer today at 4:30 to face the Bobcats. THE SALEM GAME HAS BEEN POSTPONED DUE TO RAIN
The Salem Tiger Tennis team beat out Rolla, but fell to Rogersville to take second place in the West Plains Invitational on Wednesday. A.J. Burnett tossed seven scoreless innings of one-hit ball in the Pittsburgh Pirates' 5-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals in the finale of a rain-shortened two-game set. Carlos Bletran’s double was the Cardinals lone hit. Shelby Miller (2-1) allowed two runs on six hits and a walk for the Cardinals, who had won five of their last six contests coming in. The Cardinals will be in Philadelphia tonight for the first of a four game series against the Phillies. You be able to hear the game on KSMO at 6:10.
Behind seven strong innings from starter Wade Davis, the Kansas City Royals ended the Atlanta Braves' 10-game winning streak with a 1-0 victory at Turner Field. Davis (2-0) scattered five hits and struck out seven to help the Royals split this two-game interleague set. Jeff Francoeur drove in the lone run in the fourth inning. The Royals have the day off today.
The St. Louis Blues will be hosting the Phoenix Coyotes at 7:00 tonight at the Scottrade Center. The Blues are 24-16-2 on the year and currently hold the seventh playoff spot in the Western Conference with six games left. KSMO will bring you the 3rd period following the Cardinal game.
The City of Salem Baseball/Softball/T-Ball Program is just around the corner. Signups will be held tonight and Friday, April 19th from 4:00 to 6:00 in the front lobby of the Salem Freedom Activity Center at the Armory. The Summer Youth Ball Program is open to all boys and girls age 4 to 13 years of age and the cost is $20 per child.
