Lane Howard of Lecoma has been selected the 2011-2012 Area 13 State FFA Vice President. Howard is a member of the Salem FFA Chapter with advisors Bob Parsons and Heather Johnson. Howard's Supervised Agricultural Experience Program consists of a swine production entrepreneurship program in which he raises market hogs and show pigs. Howard previously participated in public speaking, agronomy, parliamentary procedure, soils evaluation, and FFA knowledge career development events.  Howard's parliamentary procedure team placed fourth at state and the agronomy team placed first at district contest. Howard has been selected as the Area 13 winner for his swine ownership enterprise. Howard placed first in the beginning ownership record book competition and was also selected as the Star Greenhand for the Salem FFA Chapter. Howard participated in many activities in high school, has held numerous offices in those clubs including president, vice president and treasurer and is actively involved in the Dent County 4-H. Howard has served as president, vice president, secretary, reporter, and historian of the 4-H club, and president and vice president of the 4-H county council. Howard will study criminal justice at the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg. After college, Howard plans to live in a rural area and work for a government agency.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers beginning at 7:00 pm. After approval of the agenda in unfinished business, the Board will address Bill #3223. At the last meeting, the Board had directed an ordinance change for the height of letters from six inch to four inch for commercial property and Bill #3223 is correcting the height of those letters. After approval of bills presented by City Clerk Mary Happel, the Board will then canvass the election results. City Attorney Nanci Wisdom will then present Resolution #6-2011 declaring the results of the municipal election held April 5^th official. Mayor Gary Brown will then direct City Clerk Mary Happel to administer the Oath of Office to newly elected Haydn Powell Jr as East Ward Alderman and Phillip Giacomelli as West Ward Alderman for the City of Salem. Per the Code of Ordinances, the Board will then appoint one member to be President of the Board. Mayor Brown will then nominate a candidate for City Clerk, City Attorney, Chief of Police, Economic Development Director and Director of Public Works for the City of Salem and the Alderman will then vote on the nominees. Those chosen will then be administered the Oath of Office. Brown will then make his appointments to the Finance Committee and the Utility Committee with the Board’s approval. The City Attorney will report on the public hearing and Sean Curley Chairman of the Planning & Zoning Commission will report on the public meeting, both held prior to the Alderman meeting regarding the annexation of 1397 West Scenic Rivers Blvd, owned by Mississippi Valley Forest Products, Inc., an Iowa Corporation; 1500Beezley Street owned by Joshua A. Rowe; and 1402 West Franklin Avenue owned by Perry E. & Verna L Inman. Mayor Brown will give his reports on various issues as well as the Alderman. During the Introduction and Reading of Bills, Resolution #4-2011 a resolution authorizing the Mayor to execute an agreement between the City of Salem and H. W. Lochner, Inc., for the providing of engineering services for the Salem Memorial Airport runway lighting project will be presented. The City had signed an agreement with BWR for the airport project, and H.W. Lochner bought out BWR. Resolution #5-2011 is a resolution authorizing the Mayor to execute an agreement between the City of Salem and the Salem Area Community Betterment Association for services provided to the City by the Salem Area Community Betterment Association. This is a yearly contract that the City requires for the support they pay SACBA will also be presented. The Board may the vote to go into Closed Session. The regular meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public. 

On Saturday at MFA Agri-Services and MFA Green Spot in Salem, a surprised Marianne Skiles was honored for 30-years of service during their Customer Appreciation Day with a plaque and beautifully decorated cake. Marianne started as Assistant Manager right out of college on April 6, 1981 with a BS in Agriculture Science and has maintained that position to date. According to Marianne, when she started at MFA and to this day, it continues to be a service organization to the community as well as it's customers. Marianne is proud of the fact that MFA supports local 4H and FFA programs; they award two $2,000 scholarships each year; they donate the ear tags, wormer, panels and the gates needed for the Livestock Auction held each year in Salem; plus MFA continues to give back to the community monetarily in numerous other ways each year. Marianne would like to say THANK YOU to the community as well as the customers at MFA for their past years of patronage and in the years to come.

The Salem Tiger Baseball Tournament this past weekend was postponed due to rain and wet grounds. The Tigers will be at Thayer today to face the Bobcats in SCA play starting at 4:30 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio and online at ksmoradio.com. Salem enters the game with a 7-3 record overall and 4-0 in the SCA.

The Salem Golf Team will be at Mountain Grove today for the Mountain Grove Invitational starting at 9:00 this morning.

Matt Kemp went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth, as the Los Angeles Dodgers snuck past the St. Louis Cardinals, 2-1, to avoid a four-game sweep. After the Cardinals scored the first run of the game in the top of the ninth, After a leadoff double from Andre Ethier, Ryan Franklin (0-2) was called in from the bullpen to face Kemp, who cleared the wall in center to snap Los Angeles' five-game skid. David Freese drove in the lone run for St. Louis, which had a four-game winning streak snapped. Matt Holliday went 3-for-3. Chris Carpenter pitched seven scoreless innings for the Cardinals. He allowed five hits and struck out six. The Cards went 6-4 on the 10-game road trip and will be off today.

Brendan Ryan's two-run single in the seventh inning proved to be the difference, as the Seattle Mariners avoided a four-game sweep with a 3-2 victory over Kansas City at Kauffman Stadium. Jeff Francis (0-1) allowed three runs and six hits over 6 1/3 innings for the Royals, who had their win streak halted at four games. The Royals will host the Cleveland Indians tonight.
