The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their monthly meeting Thursday evening in the High School Library. Greg Nash was elected as President of the Board, Wade Jadwin was elected Vice President, Bernie Sirois was elected Secretary and Jack Blackwell was elected Treasurer. During the discussion of the building projects schedule, Bryant said that the new proposal would call for a $9 million dollar bond issue and asked the Board to review the proposal and that it would be addressed at the May meeting where the Board will be asked to make a motion as to whether or not to put it on the November ballot. In old business, the Board approved using the Cooperating School Districts Purchasing Guide, which is guide for school districts across the state for purchasing school supplies. The goal is to shop local but at the same time use it as a guide to get the best buys for the tax dollars for the district. During new business, first graders are now required to have an eye exam as part of that physical. The District was audited by the State and their immunization records were all current. There are plans to get the medical emergency equipment updated at the schools, plus have more of the staff trained in CPR as well as in asthma training. The health insurance rates went up 17.3 percent on the basic plan. The Board approved to still pay the rate for the employees plus $1.00 with the extra one dollar to be used for a Health Wellness Program. The Board approved the meal prices for the 2008-2009 school year with everything increasing 25 cents, and the Board approved the request for transportation from the Project Graduation Committee. The Board approved the program evaluation on facilities and grounds. Plans for this summer include paving and lighting at the Upper Elementary School parking lot, a roof on the east portion of the Lower Elementary, and the removing of some trees west of the Ag building. Bryant said work would be done on the football field as it will be re-crowned, have a new water system installed, then have Bermuda grass planted on it. The improvements will be paid for with money from activities & donations. The Board discussed moving the Alternative Program, Credit Recovery and ISS to a new location together. It was discussed that it would be better for those classes to all be together and to use the current Central Offices location. The Central Offices would be moved to the old Prestige Golf property. The plan is to do most all the work in-house starting with the Central Office first and then have the classes ready for use when school starts next year. It was noted that it was the best plan financially and the best plan for the educational purpose of those students as well. The Board accepted the resignations of High School Math Teacher Vivian Russell and High School Paraprofessional Winnie Armstead at the end of the school year. The Board then approved the Student Accident Insurance which is the same as last year, and approved to change to Town & Country Bank for their Bank Depository Services. The Board approved the RTI/RTC students an Embedded Credit, which is a credit within the class based on the fact that they spend one hour a day in travel time to and from school and thus do not have that one hour in order to obtain that credit. The Board then went into closed session for the purpose of discussing personnel and discipline. In Closed Session, the Board of Education voted to re-employ the non-certified support staff and extra duty personnel, which includes coaches and sponsors.

The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. At the meeting, District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5615 and 6420 and grading would be done and material would be hauled to Dent County Roads 2460 and 2470. District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that grading would be done in the Howes Mill area on Dent County Road 4380. Tune also said that FEMA has still not done anything about Dent County Roads 2240, 2300 and 2540, which remained closed due to washouts. Tune said the district is going to go ahead and proceed with getting those roads re-opened. He said that crews would be replacing pipes and working on the ditches and shoulders of each road. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he attended an Ozark Riverways Solid Waste Management Board Meeting on Tuesday and at that meeting it was reported that a recycling day will be held in Salem on October 18th for larger items such as stoves, refrigerators and washing machines.  Skiles also attended a Homeland Security Oversight Committee meeting yesterday afternoon in St. James. All three Commissioners also attended the Dent County Cattleman’s Legislative meeting that was held last night in the Bank of Salem Courtesy Room. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 and it is open to the public.
