An accident occurred at 12:45 Wednesday afternoon in Salem on Highway 19 about four miles south of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2002 Dodge Caravan driven by 88-year old Otis Brown of Salem made a left turn into the path of a 1989 Harley Davidson motorcycle driven by 44-year old David Scott of Salem. Scott suffered moderate injuries and was taken to Barnes Medical Center in St. Louis by Air Evac. Everyone involved was wearing a safety device. The Dodge Caravan sustained moderate damage and was removed by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem. The Harley was totaled and removed by a private citizen.
The Salem R-80 Board of Education will conduct their re-organizational and regular monthly meeting tonight at the boardroom beginning at 6:00 pm. After approval of the agenda and the certification of the election results, the Secretary of the Board will swear in the newly elected members. Superintendent Steve Carvajal will act as temporary chairman during the selection of the new board President and Vice President. New Board President will then preside over the election of a new secretary and treasurer. The Board will then elect an MSBA delegate and alternate (BCCA). The Board will move into the regular meeting and approve the consent agenda and hear communications. Carvajal will then welcome the new board members; and give an update on the building projects. Principals from the respective buildings will give their reports and the Board will address teacher evaluations. In new business, the Board will approve meal prices for the 2014-2015 school year, set tuition for 2014-2015 and approve MSBA Board policy 2014A updates. The Board will then address resignations and then adjourn and move into executive session for the purpose of discussing personnel. The re-organizational meeting and regular monthly meeting of the Board of Education is open to the public.
On the night of Saturday, April 12th the Crawford County Sheriff's Department deputies and Missouri State Highway Patrol troopers responded to a reported assault in Southern Crawford County, near Cook Station. The investigation led officers to believe that the assault victim was likely in a wooded area off Delcour Road near the Meramec River. Given the scope of the search area and the likelihood the victim may have sustained serious injuries, a Highway Patrol helicopter was called to assist. At approximately 3:00 am on Sunday, April 13th a Patrol Bell 407 Helicopter equipped with a "FLIR" (forward looking infra-red) thermal imaging device arrived on scene. After unsuccessfully searching the area requested by the officers on the ground, the pilot and the tactical flight officer on board made the decision to widen the area of the search. At approximately 3:35 a.m., the troopers in the aircraft noted that the FLIR indicated the presence of a heat source in an open field. As the crew continued to monitor this heat source while circling, the officers observed what appeared to be a person waving at the helicopter from the location of the heat source. The troopers in the aircraft were then able to guide the officers on the ground to the location of the heat source, where the assault victim was located. The Crawford County Sheriff’s Department is conducting an investigation.
Colonel Ron Replogle, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, would like to remind the public that spring brings varying temperatures and weather patterns, which can bring challenges for motorists. For their safety and that of their passengers, drivers are reminded to stay alert while driving in areas known to flood. Barricades closing a roadway are there to protect you. Drivers must respect barriers or barricades put in place by MoDOT it is extremely dangerous and a violation of state law to drive around them. Never drive through fast moving waters; even a small amount of fast-moving water can sweep a slow-moving vehicle off the roadway. If your vehicle becomes stuck in rising water, get out quickly and move to higher ground. Motorists should remember that spring’s widely varying temperatures can leave roadways or bridge floors covered with frost. Even though roads appear to be clear, it is important to slow down and watch for slick areas, especially early in the morning. Temperature changes also cause fog to develop. Drivers need to slow down, turn on their headlights, and be prepared to stop in foggy conditions. Weather conditions requiring the use of windshield wipers are usually those that affect visibility. Motorists are reminded that state law requires them to turn on their vehicle’s headlights any time they are using the windshield wipers. It only takes a second to turn on your vehicle’s headlights. But, that second could make you more visible to other drivers and prevent a traffic crash. Drivers need to be aware of farming equipment in the spring. Tractors and other wide farm implements will be traveling down rural roads. Drivers are encouraged to be patient, slow down, and give these pieces of equipment room on the road. If you plan to pass a slow-moving farm implement, do so wisely. Never attempt to pass on hills or curves. Also, check for a driveway on the left before passing. A farm implement moving to the right may be preparing for a wide turn, rather than allowing you to pass. Spring weather brings more traffic to the roadways, as people begin taking advantage of Missouri’s many recreation areas. Watch for changes in traffic patterns caused by the increase in the number of drivers on the road. One of the traffic patterns changes to watch for is an increase in motorcycles, bicycles, and pedestrians.
The final showings of the 2014 Easter Pageant will be held this Friday and Saturday nights at 7:00 at the First Baptist Church in Salem, located at 201 North MacArthur. This is a 90-minute dramatic musical production that includes a 72-voice choir and 85 cast members in authentic costumes on a realistic set. Interpretation is provided for the deaf and a nursery is provided for children ages 3 and younger. Everyone is welcome to attend.
