The City of Salem Board of Alderman held their meeting at the City Hall Council Chambers Monday evening. After approval of the agenda in unfinished business, City Administrator Clayton Lucas reported on the different options of the Commons and Salem City Park for the July 4^th fireworks. The Board then voted 4-0 to hold the July 4^th fireworks at the Commons. The Official Certification of the Election results were read and Resolution 9-2012 was presented and adopted by the Board. City Clerk Mary Happel then administered the Oath of Office to the newly elected officials: Mayor, Gary Brown; East Ward Alderman, Gerald Randell and West Ward Alderman, Kenneth Nash. Kenneth Nash was then appointed as the President of the Board of Alderman. Mayor Brown then presented to the Board his recommendations for the Planning & Zoning Board, Planning & Zoning Board of Adjustment, Park & Recreation Board, Finance Committee, Capital Improvements Committee and the Airport Board. During the hearing of person, Issa Labastida from Bigos Mexican Restaurant requested permission to have a band on Bigos parking lot on May 5, 2012 for a Cinco de Mayo celebration and the Board approved that request. The City of Salem requested sealed bids for the sale of approximately 1,800 pounds of scrap coated copper wire and that bid was awarded to Brady Adams of Salem for $2.06 per pound. The City of Salem had also requested sealed bids for the purchase of a new, 2012, white, regular or extended cab, air conditioned, ½ ton, 4-wheel drive pickup for the water/sewer department. The bid was awarded to C&E Auto Sales of Salem for $18,561. This truck will be used strictly as a service truck. The Planning & Zoning Commission has postponed at this time the de-annexation of 3-acres at the Junctions of Highway “J” and 72 and they voted to move forward with a historic district on Third Street to Franklin and all of McArthur. Director of Public Works and Engineering Bill Huffman updated the Board on each department’s current, finished and future projects. City Administrator Clayton Lucas wanted to remind residents that the City Clean Up will be held April 20^th through May 11^th, and the City Wide Yard Sale will be May 5^th. He also reported that the first revision of the City of Salem Code Book would be coming soon for the Alderman to look over. Alderman Jerry Randell then read a letter asking the City of Salem and the Board of Alderman to recognize two upcoming Eagle Scouts: Jonathon Wilson and James Nash. Alderman Kenneth Nash asked about the using the kids at the Sheltered Workshop when mowing needs to done on property in the City, which will be looked into further. Alderman Giacomelli asked about rental property inspections and occupancy permits. City Attorney William Camm Seay then suggested a workshop on this matter, which has been scheduled for April 30^th at 6:00 pm. Mayor Brown reported on some storm damage out by the Salem Memorial District Hospital and in the Jadwin area. He and Clayton Lucas would meet with the electric rate study group on April 26^th. It was reported that a grant for $225,000 is being sought for water and sewer line work on McArthur through the Delta Regional Authority, and a request was presented for the closing of McArthur for Halloween. Resolution 10-2012 was then presented and approved, which is a resolution authorizing the Mayor to execute an 3-year contract between the City of Salem and Cinta’s for uniform rental. Lucas then discussed with the Board what the definition of “Place of Worship” is in reference to liquor licenses. The Board then voted to go into Executive Session for the purpose of discussing real estate, personnel and litigation.

The Community Wide Yard Sale will be held on Saturday, May 5^th. The Salem Tigers collected 11 hits, eight walks, and had a hit batsman en route to a 16-1 pounding of the Thayer Bobcats in five innings Monday night. Brady Floyd finished with three hits and a RBI, Andrew Conaway had a hit and three RBI, and Austin Bettigrew had two hits and two RBI. Salem is now 8-3 on the year and 4-1 in the SCA. They will be at Mountain View to face the Liberty Eagles Thursday afternoon at 4:30.

The Salem Tiger baseball team will play South Calloway School at Busch Stadium on Saturday, May 26^th after the St. Louis Cardinals and Philadelphia Phillies game. Ticket prices will be $26.00 (originally $53) and include the Cards game that begins at 6:15 pm and then the Salem game. They have three hours to play the game. Tickets can be purchased at the Salem TCRC, located in the old Armory. The team has 600 tickets to sell with only 500 remaining. For information please call 729-8163.

The Salem Golf team finished 5^th out of 12 teams at the Panther Invitational on Monday. The two Salem golfers that received medals were Ben Adams placing 7^th overall with an 86 and Alan Benowitz getting 11^th with a 90. Salem will be in Houston this afternoon.

Andy McDonald posted a goal and two assists as St. Louis grabbed the lead in the Western Conference quarterfinal series with a 4-3 win over San Jose in Game 3. Brian Elliott made 26 stops on Monday for the win. Alexander Steen, Patrik Berglund, and Jason Arnott each posted a goal and an assist for the Blues, who have won the past two games in the series to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven affair. Game 4 will be Thursday night at 9:30.

Justin Verlander escaped a bases loaded jam in the ninth inning for his first win and complete game of the season as Detroit edged Kansas City, 3-2, in the opener of a three-game set. Billy Butler and Humberto Quintero each drove in a run for the Royals, who have dropped their past five. Danny Duffy (1-1) was touched for three runs on seven hits with a walk and seven strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings to suffer the loss. The Royals and Tigers play again tonight.

The St. Louis Cardinals had the day off yesterday but will start a three game series with the Cincinnati Reds tonight at 6:40 and you can hear it on KSMO Radio.

Funeral services for Gary Lee Plank of Salem, age 63, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be Wednesday at 11:00 until the service time at 1:00. Memorials may be made to the family.

Graveside services for James Vernon Dix of Viburnum, age 88, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the Lakeview Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Belleville, Illinois with full military honors. Visitation will be held today from 2:00 to 4:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Viburnum.

Funeral services for Joyce E. Counts of Salem, age 66, will be Monday at 11:00 at the Salem Chapel of the James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be held Sunday from 4:00 to 6:00 at the Chapel. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Kessinger Clinic in Rolla.
