The Salem Tigers collected 11 hits, eight walks, and had a hit batsman en route to a 16-1 pounding of the Thayer Bobcats in five innings Monday night. Brady Floyd finished with three hits and a RBI, Andrew Conaway had a hit and three RBI, and Austin Bettigrew had two hits and two RBI. Salem is now 8-3 on the year and 4-1 in the SCA. They will be at Mountain View to face the Liberty Eagles Thursday afternoon at 4:30.
The Salem Tiger baseball team will play South Calloway School at Busch Stadium on Saturday, May 26th after the St. Louis Cardinals and Philadelphia Phillies game. Ticket prices will be $26.00 (originally $53) and include the Cards game that begins at 6:15 pm and then the Salem game. They have three hours to play the game. Tickets can be purchased at the Salem TCRC, located in the old Armory. The team has 600 tickets to sell with only 500 remaining. For information please call 729-8163.
The Salem Golf team finished 5th out of 12 teams at the Panther Invitational on Monday. The two Salem golfers that received medals were Ben Adams placing 7th overall with an 86 and Alan Benowitz getting 11th with a 90. Salem will be in Houston this afternoon.
Andy McDonald posted a goal and two assists as St. Louis grabbed the lead in the Western Conference quarterfinal series with a 4-3 win over San Jose in Game 3. Brian Elliott made 26 stops on Monday for the win. Alexander Steen, Patrik Berglund, and Jason Arnott each posted a goal and an assist for the Blues, who have won the past two games in the series to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven affair. Game 4 will be Thursday night at 9:30.
Justin Verlander escaped a bases loaded jam in the ninth inning for his first win and complete game of the season as Detroit edged Kansas City, 3-2, in the opener of a three-game set. Billy Butler and Humberto Quintero each drove in a run for the Royals, who have dropped their past five. Danny Duffy (1-1) was touched for three runs on seven hits with a walk and seven strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings to suffer the loss. The Royals and Tigers play again tonight.
The St. Louis Cardinals had the day off yesterday but will start a three game series with the Cincinnati Reds tonight at 6:40 and you can hear it on KSMO Radio.
