The Mountain Grove Panthers used an error to score a run in the top of the seventh inning, then held on as Salem threatened in the 7th inning for a 5-4 win over the Tigers. Grant Grodon started for Salem and gave up three runs on seven hits while striking out 14 Panthers. Brandon Plank had two hits for Salem as the Tigers fall to 7-3 on the year and 3-1 in the SCA. The Tigers will be at Ava on Thursday at 4:30 in another SCA tilt.
Ian Snell threw seven innings of three- hit ball and Albert Pujols popped up with the bases loaded in the ninth to end the game, as the Pittsburgh Pirates held off the St. Louis Cardinals 3-2 at Busch Stadium. Adam Kennedy reached on an error by Adam LaRoche to start the ninth, then moved to second on Yadier Molina's sacrifice bunt. Pinch-hitter Aaron Miles singled to third to put runners at the corners, and Torres plunked David Eckstein with a pitch to load the bases. Torres then got Chris Duncan to fly out to shallow left field, setting the stage for Pujols. Pujols, however, popped a 1-0 pitch up to third baseman Jose Bautista who caught the last out in foul territory. Anthony Reyes (0-2) surrendered three runs on six hits and three walks, while striking out two for the Cardinals, who have dropped two of their last three games. Scott Rolen had two hits and a run scored for St. Louis, which fell to 1-5 at home. The Cards and Prirates will play this afternoon at noon and you can hea the game on KSMO Radio.
St. Louis announced the make-up date for the April 13 rainout with the Milwaukee Brewers before the game. The game will be part of a day-night doubleheader on July 28.
Ivan Rodriguez hit a grand slam and drove in six runs to lead the Detroit Tigers to a 12-5 rout of the Kansas City Royals in the opener of a three-game set at Comerica Park. Carlos Guillen also homered and drove in four runs for the Tigers, who have won five of seven. Ryan Shealy hit a two-run homer and Emil Brown went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored for the Royals, who have lost five straight and 10 of 13 games thus far this season. John Buck also had two hits with an RBI and a run scored for Kansas City, which has dropped three of four to the Tigers this season. Zack Greinke (1-2) suffered the loss, allowing four runs on three hits with three walks in a career-short two-thirds of an inning. The Royals will be at Detroit again tonight.
