On Saturday at 4:20 in the afternoon, Dent County Coroner Eddie Wilson was dispatched to a residence off of Dent County Road 333 where a husband and wife were found dead. The couple was identified as 74-year old Reinhardt A. Nagel, also known as Ran; and 64-year old Bobbie Nichlos Nagel, also known as Wendy, both of Salem. According to the coroner’s report, the couple’s son found his parents after returning to the residence from hiking to check on them. Wendy Nagel was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:59, and Ran Nagel was pronounced dead at 5:00 also at the scene. Both had died from gunshot wounds. Gunshot residue tests were conducted on both victims and were forwarded to the crime laboratory in Jefferson City. The Nagel’s were both in failing health and it was determined that Wendy Nagel’s manner of death be listed as a homicide and Ran Nagel’s death be listed as suicide. The Nagel’s were released to the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.

The City of Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Monday night at the city hall council chambers and Alderman Mike Whitley was not in attendance. The Board of Aldermen canvassed the election results and approved Resolution No. 1-2007 showing that Jim Jackson was elected East Ward Alderman and Bill Riley was elected West Ward Alderman. The board also appointed Mary Happel as City Clerk and City Collector, and Ruth Mullnack as City Treasurer. Mayor Brown then appointed members to the four standing committees, the Planning and Zoning Board, Board of Adjustment and Tree Board as well as the Park Board. In regular business, the board approved a request from Gary Nash to temporarily close Rolla Road between Pershing and Hickory on May 26^th for a car show for the Roots Festival. The board then heard from Sherry Biggs regarding a request to install a four-foot chain link fence for her dog between her house and shop. The board postponed their decision until Aldermen McDaniels, Nuisance Officer Rick Raw and the Mayor have a chance to look at the property. Building Inspector Bill Huffman updated the Board on twenty houses that have been sited for demolition and repairs. The board instructed Huffman to proceed with setting a public hearing to discuss the matter. Mayor Brown reminded the aldermen of the Business Expo this Saturday at the Salem High School gym. He also reminded them of the Town Hall meeting on April 23^rd to discuss downtown revitalization. On Saturday, May 5^th, the community wide yard sale will be held and there are 16 spaces left at the City Administration parking lot. Brown reported that the city is currently updating old electric meters in the city. He also said that DNR has approved Well #7 at the Industrial Park to go back online. The FINAL City youth baseball and softball sign ups will be held Wednesday from 3:00-5:00 pm at the Salem Freedom Activity Center. Alderman Bill Riley brought up that several leases at the Salem Airport for hangers have expired. He suggested getting new leases signed that reflect that those leasing the hangers must cut the grass, snow removal and maintenance. The city currently is taking care of this. The Airport Board will be meeting Wednesday to discuss rates to recommend to the aldermen. The board then approved an update to Bill No. 3094 regarding the disposition of vicious dogs. After approving the bills, the board went into closed session to discuss litigation and real estate.

U.S. Representative Jo Ann Emerson has announced that her staff will visit with voters throughout the Eighth District at Congressional Connection stops. The Congressional Connection program in is designed to establish a closer connection between constituents and the staff members who normally serve them in dealing with federal agencies or getting their opinions to Emerson. Their meeting in Salem will be at the Salem Chamber of Commerce office on Monday, April 23rd from 1:30 to 2:30.

The Mountain Grove Panthers used an error to score a run in the top of the seventh inning, then held on as Salem threatened in the 7^th inning for a 5-4 win over the Tigers. Grant Grodon started for Salem and gave up three runs on seven hits while striking out 14 Panthers. Brandon Plank had two hits for Salem as the Tigers fall to 7-3 on the year and 3-1 in the SCA. The Tigers will be at Ava on Thursday at 4:30 in another SCA tilt.

Ian Snell threw seven innings of three- hit ball and Albert Pujols popped up with the bases loaded in the ninth to end the game, as the Pittsburgh Pirates held off the St. Louis Cardinals 3-2 at Busch Stadium. Adam Kennedy reached on an error by Adam LaRoche to start the ninth, then moved to second on Yadier Molina's sacrifice bunt. Pinch-hitter Aaron Miles singled to third to put runners at the corners, and Torres plunked David Eckstein with a pitch to load the bases. Torres then got Chris Duncan to fly out to shallow left field, setting the stage for Pujols. Pujols, however, popped a 1-0 pitch up to third baseman Jose Bautista who caught the last out in foul territory. Anthony Reyes (0-2) surrendered three runs on six hits and three walks, while striking out two for the Cardinals, who have dropped two of their last three games. Scott Rolen had two hits and a run scored for St. Louis, which fell to 1-5 at home. The Cards and Prirates will play this afternoon at noon and you can hea the game on KSMO Radio.

St. Louis announced the make-up date for the April 13 rainout with the Milwaukee Brewers before the game. The game will be part of a day-night doubleheader on July 28.

Ivan Rodriguez hit a grand slam and drove in six runs to lead the Detroit Tigers to a 12-5 rout of the Kansas City Royals in the opener of a three-game set at Comerica Park. Carlos Guillen also homered and drove in four runs for the Tigers, who have won five of seven. Ryan Shealy hit a two-run homer and Emil Brown went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored for the Royals, who have lost five straight and 10 of 13 games thus far this season. John Buck also had two hits with an RBI and a run scored for Kansas City, which has dropped three of four to the Tigers this season. Zack Greinke (1-2) suffered the loss, allowing four runs on three hits with three walks in a career-short two-thirds of an inning. The Royals will be at Detroit again tonight.

Memorials services for Ran Nagel, age 74, and Wendy Nagel, age 64, will be held this morning at 9:00 at the First Baptist Church in Salem. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Gideon Bibles as requested by the family and cards are available at the Wilson Mortuary of Salem.

Funeral services for Thelma ”Blye” Hutchings of Desloge, formerly of Salem, age 90, will be held this morning at 10:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. V Interment will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.

Graveside services for Ranier Patrick of Salem, age 31, will be held this morning at 11:00 in the Zion Cemetery with Reverend Casey Reed officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 at the Fox Funeral Home in Licking.
