The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles was not in attendance due to being at the CCAM meetings in Jefferson City. Acting Presiding Commissioner Dennis Purcell gave the road report for District 1 and said that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 5630, 6080, 6420, 6430 and 6435. He indicated that recall repairs were being made to the chip and seal patcher and dump truck #115 was being serviced. Purcell went on to report that brush was being cut on Dent County Road 6245 and that a man was stockpiling white rock at the shed. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson stated that grading was going to be done and materials were going to be added to Dent County Roads 3140, 3180, 4283 and 4285. He also indicated that grading was going to be done in Dent County Road 3120. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley was also not in attendance at the meeting due to a previous commitment. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held on Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and it is open to everyone.
The Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting at the City Hall Council Chambers Monday night. Mayor Gary Brown reported that the sales tax year-to-date is down $31,807 from the same time period as last year. City Administrator Clayton Lucas went over the RFQ packets received from three health insurance brokers: Group Benefits, LTD from Iowa, Wallstreet Group from Jefferson City who is the city’s current provider, and Connell Insurance from Hollister. Representatives from Wallstreet Group and Connell were in attendance and spoke to the board. Lucas made the recommendation to go with Connell Insurance who handles the city’s Workman’s Comp Insurance, but the board voted to stay with Wallstreet Group again this year for health insurance. The board then canvassed the election results that showed that Ryan Whitaker won the East Ward Aldermen one-year race, Haydn Powell, Jr. won the two-year East Ward Alderman race, and Phillip Giacomelli won the West Ward Aldermanic Race. The oath of office was then administered to the newly elected aldermen. In the organization of the Board of Aldermen, Dr. Haydn Powell was nominated and elected to be the President of the Board. The Board then appointed and the oath of office was give to Mary Happel as City Clerk, William Camm Seay as City Attorney and Keith Steelman as Chief of Police. Mayor Brown then submitted to the Board a number of appointees for standing committees that were approved. The board then approved holding a parade to honor the timber industry on Labor Day, and they agreed to relinquish the utility easement on lots 6 and 7 of the McGrath Addition on property owned by Charles and Cindy Maledy. City Administrator Clayton Lucas said that he would be attending Missouri Municipal League training on June 13th and 14th. Alderman Powell wanted to know about the burned out home on Warfel and if the city has received anything yet and they have not. He also asked about the housing inspector’s certification and their exam is next Tuesday. Mayor Brown reported that a tire recycle collection would be held in Salem on the 3rd Saturday in October. He said that the April electric bill of $340,334.66 just paid broke down as $62,118 in demand charges, $225,228.26 in electrical charges and $52,988.40 to use the Sho-Me transmission lines to bring the electricity to Salem. The board approved Resolution 8-2013 to allow the mayor to execute an agreement with Accubak Data Services to install a wireless broadband access point on the city’s water tower at Tower and Condray Streets effective and retroactive to April 1, 2013 for a period of one year. The board also approved moving the regular meeting date of May 20th to May 28th due to vacations and conferences. The board then went into closed session.
On Monday, April 15th deputies with the Dent County Sheriff's Office responded to the 8000 block of West Highway 32 in regards to the recovery of stolen property. The property, previously reported stolen in several Dent County burglaries, was taken by the Sheriff's Office to be inventoried and identified by the victims in these cases. Arrested was 34-year old Jeremy Joe Bryce. Deputies are requesting that Bryce be charged with multiple counts of burglary, theft, and theft of a motor vehicle. Bryce is currently being held at the Dent County Jail pending issuance of warrants. The charges for which the subjects have been arrested are merely accusations and are not evidence of guilt. Evidence in support of the charges must be presented before a court of competent jurisdiction whose duty is to determine guilt.
Authorities are investigating an allegation that a kindergarten student was forced to drink urine on a school bus. District officials say last Tuesday a fourth grade student talked a kindergartener into taking a sip of a liquid in a cup, which they say was urine. The older boy has been suspended and officials say the younger boy is okay. Schools superintendent Steve Carvajal called the incident a thoughtless prank. "We don't tolerate anything like that, wouldn't matter what the age was. So, once again, we handled things quickly and justly because we want all kids in our district to be safe and free from anything like that," he said. The incident is being investigated by the Juvenile Division of the Crawford County Sheriff's Department.
The Dent County Fire Station will be hosting an open house on Saturday, April 20th from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. During the open house, all are welcome to bring their kids and cameras and get photographed on the trucks. Enjoy a tour of the building and see the change from the dealership to the Fire Department and Emergency Management Facility. Lane Stluka's two-run single in the 5th inning started a five-run frame as the Tiger defeated the Willow Springs Bears, 7-3. Kyle Lea went 2-4 and drove in two runs, while Jake Conway and Jonah Schafer got the other RBI's for Salem as they took advantage of five Willow Springs errors. Skyler Johnson went six innings and gave up three runs on five hits and he struck out nine. Salem is now 7-4 and 3-1 in the SCA. They will play the Mountain Grove Panthers Wednesday night at Houston at 6:00 in the makeup of the Houston Tournament game that was rained out in March.
The Salem Tiger Tennis team defeated Richland on Monday, 9-0, in a match that was being made up from March 25th. Salem moves to 5-1 on the season and plays again today at Licking.
Jon Jay went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI as the St. Louis Cardinals used a seven-run second inning to take down the Pittsburgh Pirates, 10-6, on Monday night. Allen Craig and Matt Holliday each added two-run doubles in the inning while Carlos Beltran and Yadier Molina also had run-producing hits. St. Louis and Pittsburgh play again tonight at 5:30 on KSMO.
The Kansas City Royals had the day off yesterday but will be in Atlanta tonight to face the Braves. Start time is set for a 6:10.
The St. Louis Blues will host the Vancouver Canucks tonight at 7:00. The Blues currently hold the seventh playoff spot in the Western Conference. You can hear the third period on KSMO following the Cardinal game.

Funeral services for Wayne A. Coppock of Rolla, age 82, will be held today at 2:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Interment will be in the Our Pioneer Cemetery in Laurens, Iowa.
