After a Planning & Zoning Commission public hearing and meeting regarding the de-annexation of 3-acres more or less at the Junction of Highway J and 72, owned by the Spring Creek Golf Club, Inc. at 6:30, the City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their regular meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers located at 202 North Washington beginning at 7:00 pm. After approval of the agenda in unfinished business, City Administrator Clayton Lucas will discuss with the Board possible locations where the 4th of July fireworks display can be held and present the Board with a contract from The Commons Committee, which was presented to him. The Board will then canvass the Official Certificate of Election results of the Municipal Election held April 3rd, as provided by Dent County Clerk Angie Curley and City Attorney William Camm Seay will then present Resolution #9-2012 declaring the results of that election. City Clerk Mary Happel will then administer the Oath Of Office to Mayor Gary Brown, East Ward Alderman Gerald E. Randell and West Ward Alderman Kenneth Nash. The Board will then appointment a President of Board of Alderman by a majority vote and Mayor Brown will make his appointments to the standing committees with the Board’s approval. During the hearing of person, Issa Labastida of Bigos Mexican Restaurant in Salem would like permission to have a band event on the restaurant parking lot on May 5, 2012 from 4:00 to 10:00 for a Cinco de Mayo celebration. In bids, the City of Salem had requested sealed bids for the sale of approximately 1,800 pounds of scarp coated copper wire and sealed bids for the purchase of a new air conditioned, white, regular or extended cab, automatic, ½ ton, 4-wheel drive pickup will be presented. City Attorney William Camm Seay will then report on the public hearing and meeting of the Planning & Zoning Commission, held prior to the Alderman meeting along with Chairman Jerry Craig. Director of Public Works & Engineering Bill Huffman will update the Board on each department’s current, finished and future projects. Clayton Lucas will update the Board on various topics concerning the city, Alderman Jerry Randell, Kenneth Nash, Haydn Powell and Philip Giacomelli will discuss issues and Mayor Gary Brown will also address items concerning the city. During the Introduction and Reading of Bills and Resolutions, Resolution 10-2012, a resolution authorizing the Mayor to execute a 3-year contract between the City of Salem and Cintas for uniform rental will be presented. In new and miscellaneous business, City Administrator Clayton Lucas wishes to discuss with the Board what the definition of “Place of Worship” is in reference to liquor licenses. The Board will then vote to go into Closed Session for the purpose of discussing real estate, personnel and litigation. The public hearing of the Planning & Zoning Board and the meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman meetings are both open to the public.

An accident happened at 6:00 Thursday morning in Phelps County on Highway 63 about four miles south of Rolla. According to the highway patrol report, a 2006 Chrysler Crossfire driven by 34-year old Joshua A. Henson of Rolla was traveling southbound on highway 63, ran off the right side of the roadway, struck a tree, and overturned. Henson suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to Mercy Hospital in Springfield by Lifeline Air ambulance. He was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chrysler Crossfire was totaled and removed from the scene by Dishman Towing. 

The Meramec Regional Planning Commission, in cooperation with the Phelps County PHA Family Self-Sufficiency Program, will host two free workshops to discuss homeownership in relation to credit and investments. Workshops are planned from 10:00 to 11:00 am, Monday, April 30th in the annex building of Peoples Bank of Cuba, located at 500 West Washington in Cuba, Missouri and from 1:00 to 2:00 that afternoon in the community room of Owensville Senior Housing located at 1009 Springfield Road in Owensville, Missouri. The workshops are offered at no cost, and registration is not required. At the Cuba workshop, Linda Jaycox, assistant vice president of the Peoples Bank of Cuba, will discuss credit and credit scores and how they relate to homeownership as well as 10 steps to homeownership. Jessica Prock, Raymond James Investment, will present “Investment and Homeownership” in Owensville. The training classes are open to all and are a part of the MRPC and PHA’s efforts to help renters who want to be first-time buyers or families who are first-time homebuyers better prepare for homeownership and make them aware of the resources available to assist with homeowners. Jaroslav Halak and Brian Elliott combined to make 29 saves and the St. Louis Blues took a 3-0 win over the San Jose Sharks in Game 2 of their Western Conference quarterfinal series. Halak stopped 12 shots and Elliott made 17 saves for just the third combined shutout in playoff history. Vladimir Sobotka and David Backes each scored for the Blues, who evened this best-of-seven series after dropping Game 1. Game 3 will be in San Jose tonight at 9:00 and you can hear it on KSMO Radio.

Matt Carpenter finished 4-for-4 with five runs batted in and a run scored to lift the Cardinals to a 10-3 victory over the Cubs in the finale of a 3 game set on Sunday. Carpenter hit his first Major League home run in the fifth inning, while Yadier Molina added a three-run home run. Jake Westbrook (2-0) tossed seven innings of four-hit ball and allowed just two runs, while striking out two. The Cards have the day off today.

Shelley Duncan blasted a three-run homer as the Cleveland Indians pounded out 15 hits in a 13-7 win over the Kansas City Royals on Sunday. Chris Getz went 3-for-5 with two RBI, while Brayan Pena had four hits and an RBI for the Royals. Luis Mendoza (0-2) was rocked for nine runs, five earned, on nine hits and four walks in four-plus innings. The Royals start a series with the Detroit Tigers tonight.

Graveside services for Kevin Earl Dunn of Steelville, age 42, will be held Tuesday at 2:00 at the Barnicle Chapel Cemetery in Steelville. All arrangements are under the direction of the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.

Funeral services for Gary Lee Plank of Salem, age 63, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be Wednesday at 11:00 until the service time at 1:00. Memorials may be made to the family.

Graveside services for James Vernon Dix of Viburnum, age 88, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the Lakeview Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Belleville, Illinois with full military honors. Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 Tuesday at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Viburnum.
