Robert Calvin Stephens was indicted on a federal weapons charge according to US Attorney Catherine L. Hanaway. The indictment alleges that on March 29, 2009, Stephens was in possession of a firearm in Dent County. Due to his previous felony conviction, Stephens is forbidden by law to own or possess firearms. Stephens, 38-years old of Lecoma, was indicted by a federal grand jury April 1st on one felony count of being a previously convicted felon in possession of a firearm. The indictment remained sealed until the defendant surrendered to authorities. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of ten years in prison and/or fines up to $250,000. Hanaway commended the work on the case by the Dent County Sheriff’s Department, the Dent County Prosecuting Attorney, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; and First Assistant United States Attorney Michael W. Reap.

The Ozark Scenic Riverways is seeking your input on the planning of some upgrades to the facilities at the Welch Lodge located on the Current River off Highway K in Shannon County. The plan is to renovate and update the Welch Lodge to modern safety and accessibility standards. This plan will provide fully adequate facilities at one site for organizations as well as park partners to conduct conservation educational programs and research groups. Public participation on the planning process is being sought and will be considered as to ensure national heritage, cultural traditions and the community surroundings all work together. You can learn to grow, harvest and use a wide variety of herbs through a workshop series, “Thyme with Herbs” at the Ozark Natural & Cultural Resource Center located at 202 South Main Street in Salem during the month of April. These workshops will be held this evening, and on April 23rd and 30th. Session one will feature basic knowledge to identify herbs and successful growing techniques for your garden presented by Penny Frazier of Goods from the Woods and Eric Stevens from VISTA Community Garden Center. Session two will teach techniques for cooking with herbs, along with demonstrations and sample presented by Jason Edwards the Salem Memorial District Hospital Dietitian. Session three introduces many surprising benefits of using herbs for health and beauty presented by Karen Robert of Sunny Slope Farms and Crystal Moore of Three Willows Natural Harvest. There is no cost to attend, but to ensure adequate supplies for everyone, please call 729-0029 to reserve a space.

The Salem R-80 Board of Education will conduct their regular monthly meeting tonight at the district administrative offices boardroom beginning at 6:00 pm. After approval of the agenda and communications, Superintendent Steve Bryant will update on the Board on legislative issues, the MSBA regional meeting and will also recognize the PDC chair for years of service. In new business, there will be presentations by the R-80 staff and high school computer science students regarding the CIA program as well as program evaluations on health services and facilities and grounds. The Board will then discuss health insurance rates, approve meal prices for 2009/2010 school year, discuss a transportation request from the Project Graduation Committee, and address a bus lease/purchase resolution. The Board will then address student accident insurance, consider job descriptions and address resignations. The Board will then go into Closed Session for the purpose of discussing personnel and student discipline. The regular monthly meeting of the Salem R-80 Board of Education is open to the public.

The Meramec Regional Planning Commission will host a free homeownership workshop on Monday, April 20th at #4 Industrial Drive in St. James. The workshop is scheduled from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Deeann Turbeville and Chuck Cantrell of the MRPC will help potential homebuyers understand budgeting, including how much money they make, how much they spend and what they spend it on. Cantrell will also help participants look at ways to cut expenses so they can save money for larger purchases, such as a home. The class is offered at no cost, on a first-come, first-served basis. Grant Gordon of the Salem Tigers pitched a five-inning PERFECT GAME against the Willow Springs Bears Wednesday, striking out 14 of the 15 men he faced as Salem beat the Bears, 15-0. He also hit a two-run homer and went 2-3 at the plate. C.J. Smith added a grand slam and finished with five RBI for Salem as they had 10 hits and received 10 walks from Bears pitchers. Salem is now 5-2 on the year and 2-0 in the SCA. They will be at Thayer today to face the Bobcats at 4:30 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio and ksmoradio.com.

Ryan Ludwick homered and drove in three runs, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to a 12-7 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks in the rubber match of a three-game series at Chase Field. Yadier Molina added three hits, two RBI and a pair of walks for the Cardinals. Chris Duncan also had three hits and two RBI, while Albert Pujols drove in a pair of runs in the win. Joel Pineiro (2-0) earned the win despite giving up five runs on nine hits and three walks, with three strikeouts, in five innings of work. The Cards begin a four game set in Chicago today at 1:10 and you can hear the game on KSMO.

Travis Hafner went 2-for-3 with a walk, a run driven in and a run scored, as the Cleveland Indians took a 5-4 win over the Kansas City Royals. Mike Jacobs hit a solo home run while Coco Crisp had a triple, two walks and scored twice for the Royals. Sidney Ponson started on the mound and was charged with two runs on six hits in six innings of work. Kyle Farnsworth (0-2) got the loss, as he gave up three runs while recording just one out in the seventh. The Royals have the day off today.

Daniel Sedin tallied a goal and an assist and Roberto Luongo made 25 saves, as Vancouver got by St. Louis, 2-1, in Game 1 of their best-of-seven Western Conference quarterfinal matchup at GM Place. Brad Boyes had the only goal for the Blues and Chris Mason turned back 29-of-31 shots in the setback. Game Two will be Friday night at 9:00 and you can hear the game on KSMO.

St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter is back in a familiar place, on the 15-day disabled list. Carpenter suffered a strained left rib cage muscle during Tuesday's game against Arizona. He was hurt in the fourth inning while swinging a bat, then tried to warm up before the bottom of the inning and was forced to leave the contest. The Cardinals also optioned pitcher Brad Thompson to Triple-A Memphis before Wednesday's game against Arizona and recalled pitchers Mitchell Boggs and Chris Perez from Memphis to fill the two roster spots.

Funeral services for Glen Lavern Bays of Viburnum, age 70,will be held Friday at 2:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Viburnum. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Upper Indian Creek Cemetery.

Funeral services for Willis Franklin Pierce, Sr. of Rolla, age 99, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 Friday. Interment will be in the Hooker Cemetery in Hooker, Missouri. Memorials may be made to the family of Willis Pierce, Sr.
