The Salem Park Board held a meeting Tuesday evening at the Salem TCRC to get ready for spring and summer activities. Parks and Recreation Director Greg Nash said that the Al Brown Fields have been aerated and fertilized, and that the baseball field backstop is being lowered a section that will alleviate stress to the support poles. Nash said that the lights do not work at the baseball field since they have been hit by lightning as there is an underground wiring problem that needs to be corrected. He also said that repairs to the 3^rd base dugout roof still need to be made. Nash reported that the softball fields were all in pretty good shape considering the amount of rain to the infields. Doug Barnes discussed the Park Board’s desire to have all the leagues use ASA regulation balls and bats. Currently the church leagues and co-ed leagues comply with that request. The board reviewed trying to start the co-ed leagues earlier than the first week of August and discussed numerous options on field use. The board realizes that both the church leagues and co-ed want to play on Monday nights, but with a limited amount of fields, that is impossible. The church league games will begin on May 21^st. Games on Tuesdays and Thursdays were discussed, but there may be limitations as to player availability on those nights that will be checked on by league representatives. The board addressed work at the City Park Fields and Nash reported that footings are in for a new bridge over the creek. He also said that the gravel and culverts are ready to go, just waiting on drier conditions to install the culverts. The city is also waiting to see if they can cover the entire culvert area for parking as Mayor Brown found a state statute that he feels would allow Salem to cover the culverts. The city attorney is checking that out. The board inquired about work at the soccer fields but the area has been too wet for anything to be done. Nash reported that the water is on at the swimming pool and he found that a diving board had a hairline crack. He will get the board replaced. He also said that lifeguards would start being hired on May 1^st. In discussing the youth baseball and softball leagues, Nash said that just over 500 children are going to participate in the baseball and softball leagues that will feature 19 T-ball teams. The T-ballers will be all children five and six years of age, before the softball league has age brackets of 7-8-9 and from 10 to 13 years of age. The baseball league will have age groups of 7 and 8, 9 and 10, and 11 through 13 years of age. The team player selection will be held next week on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday starting at 6:30 at the Salem TCRC. The board then reviewed the operation of the Cardiovascular Wellness Program to consider if it should be added under the Parks and Recreation umbrella. Although no vote was taken, a committee will be meeting next week to review the long-term goals of the Parks and Recreation Department and how that could include the Cardiovascular Wellness Program. They will also reviewing funding options for the Parks and Recreation Department in the wake of the increased cost of electricity to the city. The meeting was then adjourned.

The accident occurred at 3:16 Monday afternoon at the intersection of Tiger Pride Drive and Missouri. According to the Salem Police report, a gray 2006 Saturn driven by Briana Land and owned by Timothy Land was stopped on the roadway yielding the right of way to oncoming traffic. At that time, a blue 1991 Jeep Wrangler driven by Anthony Short and owned by Steve Short, failed to yield and struck the Saturn from behind causing moderate damage to the Saturn. No injuries were evident at the scene. The Jeep sustained minor damage. The driver of the Saturn, 16-year Briana Land, as well as occupants in the Saturn, 15-year old Amber Farrar and 16-year Lacy Wigger, sought their own medical attention later.

Lewis Carroll pitched seven strong innings allowing only four hits and an unearned run as the Salem Baseball Tigers improved to 4-1 on the year with a 6-1 win over the Willow Springs Bears yesterday. Carroll struck out four, walked one and hit a batter in getting his first win of the year. Tyler Washausen hit a two-run home run in the first inning and finished 2-3 on the day with three RBI for Salem. Brandon Plank had a double and triple and scored twice for Salem, while Ethan Curley, Ashton Karr and Chad Smith each had RBI singles. Salem is now 2-1 in the SCA and will host Ava tomorrow at 4:30.

The Salem Tigers Tennis team will travel to West Plains while the Salem Golf Team will be in Houston today.

Jose Lopez drove in four runs, and Rafael Betancourt knocked in three as the Seattle Mariners overpowered the Kansas City Royals, 11-6, at Safeco Field. Lopez tied a major league record with three sacrifice flies as the Mariners earned a split in the two-game series. John Bale (0-3) was roughed up for five runs on seven hits over three-plus innings and took the loss for the Royals. Mark Grudzielanek went 3-for-5, while Tony Pena, Jr. was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Kansas City starts a two-game series in Anaheim as they face the Angels tonight.

Skip Schumaker drove in two runs to help lift the St. Louis Cardinals to a 6-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers in the opener of a three-game series at Busch Stadium. Braden Looper (3-0) pitched five innings and earned the win after he allowed one run on three hits with four strikeouts and five walks. Kyle McClellan, Ryan Franklin and Anthony Reyes combined to pitch four hitless shutout innings. Adam Kennedy added three hits, an RBI and two runs scored for St. Louis, which has won three of its last four overall. The Cardinals lead the Central Division and were the first National League team to reach ten wins. The two teams will square off tonight at 7:05 on KSMO Radio.

Funeral services for Thomas J. O’Keefe of Rolla, age 72, will be held Thursday at 10:00 at the St. Patrick Church in Rolla. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 8:00 with a prayer service at 5:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Interment will be in the Rolla City Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the St. Patrick Church, Metallurgy Department of Missouri S&T or the Order of the Cardinal Mercier Educational Endowment Fund of Phi Kappa Theta fraternity.

Funeral services for Elva Lucinda Wedding of Rolla, age 81, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the James & Gahr in Rolla. Visitation will be Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Rolla City Cemetery.

Funeral services for Eva Jo Bradford of Rolla, age 72, will be held at a later date and are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
