The City of Salem Board of Aldermen will hold their next meeting this evening at 7:00 in the city hall council chambers. Prior to the meeting at 6:30, the board will hear a presentation on the results of the Dent County Survey sent out by the Salem Area Community Betterment Association. After the consent agenda, the board will canvass the certification of the election results from April 3rd and then administer the oath of office to Bill Riley from the west side and Jim Jackson from the east side. After the board of aldermen is organized and a new president of the board is elected, the appointment of the city clerk, city collector and city treasurer will be held. Following those appointments, Mayor Gary Brown will appoint standing committees and the park board. The regular meeting will then proceed with the hearing of persons and Gary Nash from the Roots festival will ask the board to temporarily close Rolla Road between Pershing and Hickory Streets during the Roots festival on May 26th. The board will then hear from Sherry Biggs about keeping her dog “Samson” in a suitable pen as required under the vicious dog ordinance. In the reports from city officials, boards and committees, the board will hear from City Clerk Mary Happel about legislative updates that could affect the city. Building Inspector Bill Huffman will then update the board on twenty houses that have been sited for demolition or repairs. Alderman Bill Riley will then discuss airport hanger lease renewals and miscellaneous items.  Aldermen Jim McDaniels, Jim Jackson and Mike Whitley will also discuss miscellaneous items dealing with the city before Mayor Gary Brown gives his comments. After the reports, the board will discuss Bill #3094 that is an ordinance that repeals sections 5-58 title of “Disposition of Vicious Dogs” and replaces the said section with a new section 5-58 with the same title. After the board approves the bills, they will go into closed session to discuss personnel, real estate and litigation. The meeting of the City of Salem Board of Aldermen and the meeting concerning the survey results are both open to the public.

Senator Frank Barnitz will have his legislative assistant Wilma Rowden of Vienna available at several listening posts in April. On Tuesday, April 17th, Rowden will be at the St. James City Hall from noon to 2:00 p.m. On Thursday, April 19th, Rowden will be available to talk with constituents from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Phelps County Courthouse in Rolla. Those who are unable to make it to the listening posts may contact Rowden at 573-201-6207.

The Salem Public Library will hold their next older adult program tomorrow morning at 10:00 at the library meeting room entitled, Hobby Time.” Anyone 50 years of age and older is invited to attend and you may bring samples or pictures of your favorite hobby.

In Friday’s edition of Your World Today, the 31-year old male that was killed in the head-on collision on Highway 19 south Thursday evening, was Ranier J. Patrick, not Patrick J. Ranier. We apologize for the error.

Representative Jason Smith of Salem will take a more active role in determining the outcome of the legislative process after being officially appointed this week as Majority Deputy Whip.  Rep. Smith was named to serve in one of the two Deputy Whip positions by House Majority Whip, Representative Brian Nieves of Union. In his role as a Deputy Whip, Smith will be responsible for assisting Representative Nieves in rounding up votes on critical issues and communicating leadership positions to other members of the majority.  Representative Smith will have seven Whip members serving under him to assist in the duties of the Majority Whip Team In addition to serving as Deputy Whip and Vice Chair of Job Creation and Economic Development; he also serves on the Judiciary Committee, Special Committee on Professional Registration & Licensing and on three joint committees; Administrative Rules, Court Automation and Legislative Research.

The William Lynch Elementary School will be having Kindergarten registration on May 2nd from 8:30 AM until 2:30 PM for the 2007-2008 school year. The child must be five by July 31st of this year and be present at the screening. You must also bring a birth certificate, social security card for the child and their shot record. The Salem Baseball tigers Tournament scheduled for this past weekend was rained out. They will attempt to schedule the tournament at a later date. The Tigers will face SCA foe Mountain Grove today starting at 4:30 at the Salem High School Baseball Complex. You can hear that game on KSMO Radio and online at www.ksmoradio.com. Salem enters the game with a 7-2 record and 3-0 in the SCA.

The Salem Golf Team will be at Potosi this morning at 8:00 while the Salem Tennis Team will be hosting the Mountain View Liberty Eagles at 4:00. The Salem Track Teams will be in action today at Steelville starting at 3:30.

Albert Pujols belted a pair of homers and drove in five runs, as St. Louis hammered Milwaukee, 10-2. Braden Looper (2-1) got the win by giving up just five hits and two runs in six innings. Ryan Franklin, Brad Thompson and Randy Flores each tossed one shutout inning of relief. Chris Duncan added a career-high four hits, including his third homer of the season, and a pair of runs scored for the Cardinals, who won at home for the first time in five games this season. Adam Kennedy and Yadier Molina had two hits apiece, and Preston Wilson scored three times. The Cardinals will host Pittsburgh for a two-game set starting tonight at 7:00 after Salem Baseball.

Sunday's game between the Kansas City Royals and the Baltimore Orioles was postponed due to heavy rain. No makeup date was immediately scheduled. The Royals will be at Detroit tonight.

Kansas City Chiefs guard Will Shields announced his retirement from the NFL on Sunday. The 35-year-old Shields missed just one game over his career, and that was during his rookie campaign in 1993 with the Chiefs.

Funeral services for Lawrence E. Terrill of Salem, age 89, will be held at 1:00 today at the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Memorials services for Ran Nagel, age 74, and Wendy Nagel, age 64, will be held Tuesday morning at 9:00 at the First Baptist Church in Salem. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Gideon Bibles as requested by the family and cards are available at the Wilson Mortuary of Salem.

Funeral services for Thelma ”Blye” Hutchings of Desloge, formerly of Salem, age 90, will be held Tuesday morning at 10:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 tonight. Interment will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.

Graveside services for Ranier Patrick of Salem, age 31, will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 in the Zion Cemetery with Reverend Casey Reed officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 at the Fox Funeral Home in Licking.
