The Dent County Sheriff’s Office has released their reports for an incident that took place at the Commons Camp Grounds on Saturday, April 12^th. At 9:20 that night, information was obtained that Jason Hodges, who had felony warrants, was staying in a camper trailer at the Commons Camp Grounds. Deputies, Salem Police Officers, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol gained entry into the camper trailer. They began a search of the trailer and when they came to the bathroom door, they discovered it was locked. Deputy Chris Robbins attempted to open the door when he heard Hodges state, from inside the bathroom, that he had a firearm and was going to kill himself if anyone tried to enter the bathroom. All units exited the trailer and set up a perimeter. Sheriff Stallings then responded to the location. There was sporadic communication with Hodges over his cell phone and a public address system, but he refused to come out. Sheriff Stallings requested the assistance of a friend of Hodges to help in setting up a dialog over the phone. There were numerous calls made throughout the night, he would talk for a while and then hang up. After negotiating for over four hours, he finally agreed  to surrender to the Sheriff. Sheriff Stallings went up to the front of the camper, met Hodges at the front door, and placed him in hand irons. A search of the camper trailer for a firearm met with negative results. Hodges was transported to the Salem Memorial District Hospital for a medical evaluation and he was later placed on a 96-hour commitment.

An accident happened Sunday evening at 8:15 in Wayne County on Highway 67 at Wayne County Road 406 just south of Greenville. According to the highway patrol report, a 2000 Dodge Neon driven northbound by Willard Pogue of Dittmer, struck a 2006 Ford Taurus X driven northbound by 19-year old Joshua Brown of Salem as Brown was attempting to make a lane change. A passenger in the Neon, 35-year old Jason Bomarito of Dittmer, suffered moderate injuries, as did a passenger in the Taurus, 52-year old Lorraine Brown of Salem. The East Wayne Ambulance Service took both injured parties to the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center. Both vehicles were totaled.

An accident happened Saturday night at 10:25 in Crawford County on Route M about 12 miles southwest of Steelville. According to the highway patrol report, a 2004 Chrysler Pacifica driven southbound by 31-year old Donovan Anderson of Rolla, failed to negotiate a curve, traveled off the left side of the roadway, struck an embankment and overturned. A passenger in the Pacifica, 43-year old Mark Evans of Rolla, suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center by the Steelville Ambulance. Suffering minor injuries was 25-year old Jordan Bourland of Rolla who was treated at the scene and released. The Pacifica was totaled in the accident.

Preschool screening will be held at the William Lynch Elementary School today and Wednesday. Interested parents may call 729-6611 to make an appointment. Children must be 3 or 4 years of age before August 1^st. Those children age 4 before August 1^st will get preference, and kids age 3 may have to be put on a waiting list.

The Salem Police Department released their report for the month of March. During the month, they wrote 10 equipment repair orders, 17 summons to appear in court, 26 warning tickets, and 24 traffic tickets. The Salem Police Department investigated 12 accidents, one assault, three burglaries, four reports of disorderly conduct, five reports of domestic violence, one report of fraudulent use of a credit and/or debit device, one report of leaving the scene of an accident, and one report of a lost and/or stolen license plate. The department also investigated one report of a missing person, one report of a missing and/or runaway juvenile, one report of an open container, two reports of property damage, one report of resisting and/or interfering with arrest, 14 reports of stealing, and one report of tampering. They also investigated three reports of possession of amphetamine, one report of manufacturing amphetamine, one report of possession of cocaine, two reports of possession of marijuana, one report of selling marijuana, one report of trafficking of methamphetamine and four reports of possession of drug paraphernalia. The police department received 1,524 calls for service during the month, handled 92 walk-ins to the station, and redirected 62 calls to the animal control officer. They spent 30 hours in court testifying, four hours as court bailiff and spent 26 hours teaching D.A.R.E. The calls in March included 24 calls for escorts, three calls for an intoxicated driver, four calls for prowlers, two calls for a suspicious person and/or vehicle, four intoxicated pedestrian calls, 16 calls for domestic disputes, and four calls for a wrecker. There were nine 911 calls, four calls for a peace disturbance, 10 calls for alarms sounding, three calls for fights in progress, five ambulance assist calls, and seven fire calls.  The Salem Police Department drove a total of 9,010 miles and arrested 27 males and 7 females during the month of March.

The final showings of the 2014 Easter Pageant will be held this Friday and Saturday nights at 7:00 at the First Baptist Church in Salem, located at 201 North MacArthur. This is a 90-minute dramatic musical production that includes a 72-voice choir and 85 cast members in authentic costumes on a realistic set. Interpretation is provided for the deaf and a nursery is provided for children ages 3 and younger. Everyone is welcome to attend.
