The City of Salem Clean-Up Weeks will start today and last through April 26th and will run on your regular pick up day. This means you can place as much household trash as you need to curbside. The Clean-Up weeks also gives you the opportunity to get rid of larger items as well such as old appliances, old Bar-B-Q grills, old sofas, broken exercise equipment, old mattresses, etc. Those larger items will be picked up by city work crews and should not be co-mingled with the household trash, but should also be placed curbside. Remember, you CANNOT dispose of cans of paint that still have paint in them, oil, tires, and car batteries. These items have to be taken to special “haz-mat” collections or to the Rolla Recycling Center by appointment. City Administrator Clayton Lucas also said that because of the storm Wednesday night, the city would be picking up branches, limbs and debris bags that are placed curbside. Again, place these items separate of the other trash items that you are placing curbside. Every effort should be made to bundle your limbs and branches according to the city codes that state they should be no larger than four feet in length, and debris such as leaves, twigs and grass clippings should be placed in the biodegradable bags available at the City Administrative Offices. The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers located at 202 North Washington beginning at 7:00 pm. After approval of the agenda in unfinished business, postponed from the last meeting, City Administrator Clayton Lucas will present proposals and make his recommendation on the RFQ packets. The Board will then canvass the official certification of election results of the municipal election held April 2nd and the City Attorney will then present Resolution #7-2013 declaring the results of that election, which the Board must adopt. Mayor Gary Brown will then make his appointments to the standing committees with the Board’s approval. During the hearing of persons, Todd Kinerk is requesting permission to have a parade on August 30th in Salem entitled, “Salute to the Timber Industry,” and Charles and Cindy Maledy are requesting that the City relinquish the utility easement on lots 6 & 7 in the McGrath addition. Lucas will then update the Board on various items concerning the City, while all of the alderman may address issues around town. Mayor Brown will then give his report on items regarding the City of Salem. Resolution #8-2013 will then presented authorizing the Mayor to act as a representative for the City in executing a tower lease agreement between the city and Accubak Data Systems, Inc. to install a wireless broadband access point with related equipment on a designated portion of the Salem water tower located at Tower and Condray Street effective and retroactive to April 1, 2013 and for a period of one year. The Board will then address changing meeting dates in May due to vacations and conferences of those involved with the Board of Alderman. The May 6th meeting to May 13th and the May 20th meeting to May 28th, which is Memorial Day. The Board may the vote to go into closed session. The meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.
The Dent County Fire Station will be hosting an open house on Saturday, April 20th from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. During the open house, all are welcome to bring their kids and cameras and get photographed on the trucks. Enjoy a tour of the building and see the change from the dealership to the Fire Department and Emergency Management Facility. Come out for a day of fun filled events and enjoy the complimentary hot dogs, hamburgers and all the fixings as well as popcorn and snow cones! The Salem Tiger Baseball Tournament was held this past weekend in Salem with Salem capturing 2nd place in the tournament. Salem defeated St. James Friday with Hunter Barnes and Lane Stluka hitting home runs in that game. The Tigers then lost to Licking Saturday morning before defeating Eldon Saturday afternoon. The Licking Wildcats won the tournament winning all three game they played. The Salem Tigers will be at Willow Springs this afternoon for an SCA conference matchup starting at 4:30. You can hear that game on KSMO Radio and online at ksmoradio.com. The Tigers are 6-4 on the year and 2-1 in the SCA.
The Salem Golf Team will be on the road today, as they will be playing at Mountain Grove.
Salem Tennis Tigers defeated Jefferson City- Helias but fell to Kickapoo to take second place at the Missouri Military Academy Invitational Tennis Tournament. Casey Davison placed first in his individual bracket. Matt Sirois, Josh Plank, and Jennifer Holmes all placed second in their individual brackets at the MMA invitational. Salem Tennis will play at Richland today.
Corey Crawford made 30 saves for his third shutout of the season and the Western Conference-leading Chicago Blackhawks beat the St. Louis Blues, 2-0, on Sunday. Brian Elliott stopped 24-of-26 shots for the Blues, who have dropped two straight since a six-game winning streak. His shutout streak ended at 214:00 after shutting out opponents in the three games coming into this game. St. Louis holds the sixth spot in the conference with 48 points, just one back of the San Jose Sharks in the standings. The Blues will start a four game home stand on Tuesday when they host the Vancouver Canucks. That game is set to start at 7:00.
St. Louis' scoreless streak came undone in the late innings Sunday, as the Milwaukee Brewers lit up the Cardinals' bullpen and escaped Busch Stadium with a 4-3 win on Jonathan Lucroy's home run in the 10th inning. Ryan Braun ended a string of 39 consecutive scoreless frames by the Cardinals' pitching staff with a two-run blast in the eighth. Matt Adams went 2-for-4 with a solo homer for St. Louis, which had won four straight and stranded the tying run on second in the 10th. Cardinal starter Jaime Garcia took a no-decision despite scattering seven hits and two walks over seven scoreless innings. The Cardinals will be in Pittsburgh to start a series with the Pirates tonight at 6:10 and it can be heard on KSMO Radio.
Alex Gordon delivered a game-winning base hit up the middle in the bottom of the ninth and the Kansas City Royals salvaged a three-game set with a 3-2 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. Chris Getz set the table for Gordon when he stroked a double against reliever Darren Oliver. Gordon, Lorenzo Cain and Jarrod Dyson each had two hits for Kansas City, which had won six of seven before dropping the first two games of this series. Royals starter Ervin Santana didn't factor into the decision, but was strong over eight innings, yielding two runs on seven hits and three walks with four strikeouts. Kelvin Herrera (1-0) picked up the win with a perfect ninth. The Royals have the day off today.

Funeral services for Hilma Adams of Linn, formerly of Steelville, age 96, will be held today at 1:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Old Dillard Cemetery in Dillard. All arrangements are under the direction of the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.
Funeral services for Wayne A. Coppock of Rolla, age 82, will be held Tuesday at 2:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Our Pioneer Cemetery in Laurens, Iowa. Memorials may be made to Yahweh’s Assembly in Yahshua. Arrangements under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
