The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Thursday morning at the courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 5610, 6310, 6485, 6493 and 6505. He stated that brush is going to be cut on Dent County Road 6220 and a grader is going to be serviced. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 2200, 2370, 3190 and 3300; while rock would be hauled to and grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2330 and 4380. He also said that rock would be hauled to Dent County Road 5260 if time allows, and brush will be cut on Dent County Road 2150. Both commissioners said that a worker would be hauling brown rock. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that the CCAM board is still working on the budget statute for counties to allow them to adjust the budget should revenues decrease. He said that there have been some negotiations to appease everyone, but he is not sure that it will get heard this session, as there seems to be no urgency in getting it passed. He also reported that at the MAC meetings, they were updated on the Fair Tax proposals, streamlining sales and use tax agreements for Internet sales, and a proposal for advanced voting for 2012 with some type of state reimbursement that would include a photo ID requirement to vote. Skiles went on to say that the elk damage bills in the Senate and House are now both totally out of committees and are waiting to be heard on the floor. Skiles said that the sales tax revenues received in April were $13,547 more than those received in April of 2010, and year-to-date, the county has received $196.85 more than for the same time period in 2010. He also wanted to remind everyone that the quarterly commissioners meeting is going to be held Monday at 6:00 at the Dent County Judicial Building and it is open to the public. Commissioner Purcell reported that he attended the MOBroadbandNow meeting in St. James on Monday and they report that currently 79.7% of the population currently has Internet, and their goal is to be at 95% by 2014. They intend to install a larger “pipe” with fiber optics that would help schools, hospitals and businesses increase their capabilities. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

A 14-year-old suspect is in custody, suspected of setting a fire at a Rolla church on Tuesday. The fire happened at the Community Christian Church located at 807 East Highway 72. Police say crews were called to the scene about 2:45 pm. No one was injured in the fire. After the fire was out, investigators were able to determine the fire was intentionally set. Police took a 14-year-old into custody. Authorities believe the teenager had broken into the church, stolen several items, and then set the fire.

An accident occurred at 8:10 Thursday morning April 14^th on Highway 32 in Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2002 Toyota Avalon driven by 55-year old Stephen Wisdom of Salem was traveling eastbound on Highway 32, traveled off the right side of the roadway, struck an embankment and went airborne and then struck a sign before coming to rest. Wisdom suffered minor injuries and was transported to the Salem Memorial Hospital by private vehicle. He was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Toyota sustained minor damage and was driven from the scene. 

A new set of reports rank the health of nearly every county in the nation and show that much of what affects health occurs outside of the doctor’s office. For the second year, the County Health Rankings confirm the critical role that factors such as education, jobs, income, and environment play in how healthy people are and how long they live. This year, the Rankings allow people in more than 3,000 counties to compare the overall health of their counties against other counties in their state, and also compare their performance on specific health factors against national benchmarks of top-performing counties. Published on-line at www.countyhealthrankings.org by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, The Rankings look at a variety of measures that affect health such as the rate of people dying before age 75, high school graduation rates, access to healthier foods, air pollution levels, income, and rates of smoking, obesity, and teen births. Out of the 114 ranked counties in Missouri, with number one being the healthiest, Dent County was ranked at 95. Rankings for other counties in our area include Texas at 103, Shannon at 92, Reynolds at 110, Iron at 107, Crawford at 99, Phelps at 70, and Pulaski at 52.

Ryan Smith went 4-5 and drove in three runs to help lead the Salem Tigers to a 14-3 win over Willow Springs yesterday. Aaron Shaw went 3-3 for two RBI, Devon Sutterfield had two hits and three RBI and Austin Bettigrew added three hits in the game as Salem banged out a total of 15 hits on the day. Brady Floyd got the win with six strong innings as Salem improves to 7-3 on the year and 4-0 in the SCA. They will play in the Salem Tournament this weekend against St. James today at 4:00, Licking tomorrow at 9:00 AM and Iberia at 1:00.

The Salem Golf Team tied for the 3^rd in a team meet at Cabool Thursday. The Salem individual scores were Ben Adams with a 43, Dylan Sisco shot a 46, Adam Wood finished with a 47, and Alan Benowitz shot a 49. Salem will be in Mountain Grove on Monday morning at 9:00.

Matt Holliday went 3-for-5 with three runs batted in and two runs scored, as the St. Louis Cardinals scored a 9-5 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers Thursday night. Yadier Molina went 2-for-4 with two RBI for the Cardinals, who have recorded 14 or more hits in each their past four games for the first time since doing so from May 30-June 2, 1979 (65 total). Albert Pujols hit a solo home run and scored twice for the Cardinals, who got five innings from starter Jaime Garcia (2-0). The left-hander gave up three runs on eight hits. The Cards and Dodgers play tonight at 8:35 on KSMO Radio.

Wilson Betemit finished 1-for-2 with two RBI, including a solo homer in the fourth inning, as the Kansas City Royals topped the Seattle Mariners, 5-1, in the rain-shortened opener of a four-game set. Alex Gordon hit a two-run double in third inning while Bruce Chen (2-0) went eight innings, allowing one unearned run on six hits while striking out a batter as Kansas City won for the fourth time in five games. The Royals and Mariners will play again tonight in Kansas City.

The Kansas City Royals placed reliever Robinson Tejeda on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation on Thursday. The move is retroactive to April 13. Tejeda, 29, is 0-1 with a 5.06 earned run average in seven games this season. In a related move, the club recalled right-handed relief pitcher Blake Wood from Triple-A Omaha.

The Chicago Bears and St. Louis Rams will play the Hall of Fame Game on August 7^th in Canton, Ohio to begin the NFL preseason schedule. The nationally televised game will be played, along with the rest of the preseason schedule, so long as the current NFL labor dispute is settled in time. The players and NFL owners are trying to reach an agreement on a new collective bargaining agreement after the old one expired on March 11^th.
