On Monday, April 12th the Dent County Sheriff’s Department received a 911 call from the Salem Wood Products that a co-worker had found the body of 43-year old Tracy Pettit of Salem and CPR was started. Ralph Ford M.D. at the Salem Memorial District Hospital ER pronounced Pettit dead at 4:07 pm. The body was taken to the Dent County Coroner’s office and released to Wilson Mortuary. The conclusion as to the reason for the death is pending at this time, as an autopsy has been scheduled by Dr. Friedlander with Parcells Forensic Pathology Group, PA in Springfield.

The Salem Police Department released their reports. On Tuesday, April 6th at 7:55 p.m. an officer was contacted at the station in reference to tampering with a witness.  The investigation of the report revealed the victim of an assault was being threatened in lieu of a previous assault wherein the victim was a witness. At 8:15 p.m. that evening, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to phone harassment.  The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown were sending threatening messages. That same evening at 9:14 pm, an officer was detailed to the Walnut Motel in reference to a disturbance. The report led to the arrest of a 46-year old Salem male for disorderly conduct. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Then at 9:15 p.m. that same evening, an officer was dispatched to the Salem Hospital to transport a 48-year old Salem male to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center in lieu of a mental commitment order. He was transported and released to the Center of Psychiatric Services. Anyone with any information regarding the tampering of a witness or the phone harassment, which are still under investigation, can contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.

The Salem R-80 Board of Education held a special meeting Tuesday evening at the district administrative offices for the re-organization of the school board. Assistant Superintendent Cindy Rumpf acted as the temporary chairman and read the results of the April 6th election that showed that Carol Jordan and Bernie Sirois were the two top vote getters among the five candidates running. The board approved the results, 4-0. R-80 Board Secretary Chris Heavin then swore-in Bernie Sirois and Carol Jordan as the new Salem R-80 Board of Education members. New officers were elected and they are Jack Blackwell as President, Chris Heavin as Vice-President, Carrie Coffman Snyder as the Secretary and the Treasurer is Clifton Parker. The board then heard and accepted the resignations of Amber Tarvin who is the 9th grade Communication Arts instructor, 1st grade teacher Claire McCartney, Upper Elementary Nurse Holly Asbury and janitor Ronald Quick. The meeting was then adjourned.

The Missouri State Auditor Susan Montee has begun an audit of Dent County. A team of auditors is now reviewing county records as part of the fieldwork phase of the audit. The audit report, which will be available to the public, will include recommendations for any changes needed in county government operations. Responses from county officials to the state auditor’s recommendations will also be included along with a review of action taken by officials in response to recommendations made in the previous audit report of the county. Salem finished 4th out of seven teams at Mt. View on Tuesday in an afternoon golf match.  Willow Springs won the match with a 157, followed by Liberty with a 173, Thayer with a 184, and Salem shot a team total of 185. Connor Stroburg led the Tigers with a 44, Ben Adams shot a 45, Dylan Sisco finished with a 46, Adam Wood ended with a 50, and Alan Benowitz shot a 54 which did not count toward the total. JV scores were C.J. Davison with a 47, Zach Pogue shot a 51, and Nathan Andersen finished with a 69. The golf team will play at Cabool play at Cabool on Thursday.

The St. Louis Cardinals had the day off Tuesday and will host the Houston Astros tonight starting at 6:55 on KSMO Radio. The Cardinals are off to a 5-2 start to the season and are in 1st place in the Central Division.

Carlos Guillen doubled in the game-tying and go-ahead runs during a six-run seventh inning to lead Detroit in a 6-5 comeback win over the Royals at Comerica Park. The Tigers were down 5-0 entering the seventh, but rallied to win for the fifth time in six games. Jose Guillen and David DeJesus each had solo home runs to pace the Royals, who have dropped three of four. Alberto Callaspo ended with two RBI. Kansas City's Brian Bannister worked 6 1/3 innings and allowed just two runs on four hits with four strikeouts. The bullpen couldn't hold the lead as Roman Colon, Dusty Hughes (0-1) and Juan Cruz were battered for four runs on five hits and three walks in closing out the seventh. The Royals and Tigers play again this afternoon in Detroit.

A Memorial Service for Harold Bradford of Salem, age 84, will be held Thursday at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary of Salem. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery. The Salem American Legion Post #99 will hold full Military honors. Memorials are suggested to the family for funeral expenses.

Funeral services for Alpha Jean Hutcherson of Salem, age 69, will be held Thursday at 11:00 at the Lux Chapel in Rantoul, Illinois. All local arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.

Funeral services for Tracy Calvin Pettit of Salem, age 43, will be held Saturday at 2:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from 1:00 until time of service.

Funeral services for Russell Isaiah Oller Jr. of Salem, age 80, will be held on Tuesday, April 20th at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Monday, April 19th from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Gladden Empire Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Gladden Empire Cemetery.

A Memorial Service for John Wesley Taylor of Rolla, age 86, will be held on Saturday, April 24th at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Memorials are suggested to the Shriner’s Childrens Hospital or the Phelps Regional Hospice.

A Memorial Service for Louise A. Venn of Salem, age 76, will be held Saturday, May 1 at the James and Gahr Mortuary of Salem. Internment will be private. Memorials are suggested to the Dent County Animal Shelter.
